Chapter 1

My wife posted a snapshot of her deep Kiss with her "guy bestie" on social media, captioned "Men and women can be just friends."

I was livid and confronted her about it.

She shot back, claiming my love was stifling her and that even married folks shouldn't limit each other's freedom to make friends.

Eventually, I gave her the space she wanted, but then she pleaded with me not to walk away.

Glancing at the phone my colleague handed me, it felt like my breath was stuck in my throat.

The screen showed a man and woman deeply kissing.

The woman was smiling, her eyes twinkling with a hint of shyness.

The caption read: [Men and women can be just friends.]

My hand shook as I held the phone. I checked my social media, clicked on my wife's profile, and sure enough, she had blocked me.

"Mr. Jones, if your wife posted this for everyone to see, maybe there's nothing to it. Maybe it's just a joke," he suggested.

Noticing my mood, the intern cautiously tried to console me.

My colleague added awkwardly, "Seriously, man, you and Lisa are a power couple. She'd have to be blind to fancy someone else."

I struggled to keep my cool, handed back the phone, and headed straight for the next department.

My wife, Lisa, and I work at the same company but in separate departments—I manage one team, and she manages another.

The guy in the make-out video? I knew him; he worked under Lisa.

When I entered her office, Lisa was all smiles on her phone. Seeing me, her smile faltered, and she quickly flipped her phone face down.

"Mr. Jones, what are you doing here?" she asked with her familiar sweet smile, her head tilted in that charming way she had.

This was her usual way—professional and crisp with her team, but softer and more playful with me. I always found it endearing and unique.

But today, that endearing look only reminded me of the passionate make-out session I had just seen on the phone.

After a few deep breaths, I pulled out my phone and showed her the saved picture. "Care to explain this?"

Lisa caught her breath for a moment at the sight of the photo but quickly composed herself.

"It was just for laughs, a dare that went too far. You're not getting jealous, are you?" She looked at me, eyes twinkling mischievously like crescents.

But her nonchalant demeanor only fueled my anger even more.

"Just for laughs? If I were caught on camera like this with another woman, would you be cool with it? And if it's no big deal, why did you feel the need to block me?"

As I pressed her, Lisa's demeanor finally shifted.

"Mike, are you questioning my loyalty?" She bit her lip, looking both hurt and defiant.

"After all our years together, you're questioning me over one picture? I told you, it was just a playful dare during a truth or dare game. They snapped that shot as a penalty for losing."

I shook my head, feeling let down. "We're all adults here. Shouldn't you know better? And as a manager, if you really didn't want to do it, who could have forced you?"

"I've warned you time and again about getting too close to this guy, Nate Drake. But here you are, making out with him? If a coworker hadn't shown me, were you ever going to tell me?"

My words seemed to strike a nerve, and she burst out yelling, "Who snitched? Was it that vixen, Sarah Sullivan?

"I knew she was trouble! She's been flirting with you despite knowing you're married. I'll have to confront her about trying to wreck our home!"

Chapter 2

Hearing Lisa's meltdown, I lost my temper and slammed my hand on the desk. "Can you stop freaking out? It wasn't Sarah who showed me. If you're bold enough to post it, why are you afraid of me finding out?"

"You're shouting at me?" Lisa looked at me incredulously. "You're getting worked up over some random chick? Mike Jones, that's rich!

"You preach at me, but aren't you doing the same thing? Don't think I haven't noticed that intern throwing herself at you, calling you 'Mike' as if she's got a claim on you!"

I massaged my temples, exasperated. "I've explained it a million times. Sarah didn't know I was married at first. Once I made it clear, she backed off."

"You know how awkward it is to be the center of unwanted attention, so why can't you keep things professional with Nate? I trust you, but we both need to guard our relationship. It's not just about trust; it's about principles."

I had always been the one to smooth things over from our dating days to our married life. But this time, I stood my ground.

Our relationship was precious, from college flings to married bliss, and now with Lisa pregnant, I wanted no troubles from others in our marriage.

But Lisa was not listening.

She shook her head in disbelief, unable to accept that I was actually challenging her, or as she might see it, "schooling" her.

Her cheeks flushed with anger, she retorted, "Just because we're married doesn't mean I stop being an individual. Mike, sometimes your need to control everything really chokes me. Can't you give me a bit more room to breathe?

"Choosing my friends is my right, and even as my husband, you don't get to dictate who I can be friends with.

"Nate is just a friend, a guy bestie to me. Don't twist our pure friendship into your dirty narratives!"

Her words made my heart race again.

Finally, after she declared, "As long as there's no bed involved, it's merely social interaction, and you can't dictate my friendships," I stormed out, slamming the door.

After that fiery exchange, Lisa and I entered a standoff.

Day in and day out, we barely exchanged words, and I relocated to the guest room.

At work, colleagues tiptoed around me, their pitying glances only deepening my irritation.

I had always been the first to apologize after our spats. However, this time Lisa was the one to reach out first.

On the third day of our silent treatment, I returned home to find candles lighting the dining table.

The aroma of the dinner wafted through the room, stopping me in my tracks.

As I stood frozen, Lisa wrapped her arms around me from behind, her voice soft in my ear.

"Mike, I'm sorry. Today marks seven years since we first dated. Are we really going to keep this up? I promise to keep my distance from Nate. Don't stay mad, okay?"

Chapter 3

I turned to face her, and my eyes glimmered seeing her in a white dress.

It was the one she wore when we first met in college in sophomore year.

Under the autumn leaves was she reading a book in the white dress, and I had fallen head over heels for her that day.

After a year of pursuit, we had finally made it official.

Now, she was my wife, visibly pregnant with our first child, the crystal of our love. She bit her lips, her eyes glistening with a mix of fear and hope.

The frost in my heart melted like the first thaw of spring, and without a word, I pulled her into a hug.

"Sit down, you shouldn't be on your feet right now. From here on, I'm taking over the kitchen duties."

Lisa's anxious expression broke into a relieved smile, and she pecked my cheek.

"I always know you are the best, babe."

After dinner, as we reminisced over our younger days, the old spark reignited between us.

I scooped her up in my arms and carried her toward the bedroom.

Lisa playfully scolded, "Take it easy, will you?"

The next day, we walked into the office together.

No sooner had I sat down than a coworker leaned over, grinning. "Looks like you two patched things up? Man, I thought Sarah had a shot."

I gave him a stern look. "Cut it out. I'm taken, and she's just a young woman starting out. If you don't stop the gossip, I won't forget it."

He quickly zipped his lips, gesturing a truce with his hands.

As I turned away, my gaze briefly sweeping Sarah

She seemed to be looking my way and hastily averted her eyes as mine caught hers.

And I sighed to myself.

Sarah was this year's intern, bright and capable, turning the heads of those single men with her charm and good looks.

As her boss, I occasionally checked in on her during late hours, reminding her to head home safely.

But little did I know the girl seemed to have some crush on me.

I hadn't realized her feelings until Lisa, with her intuitive sense, visited the office and spotted the signs immediately.

Lisa then made a point of adding all my coworkers on social media, constantly showcasing our relationship.

Sarah got the hint and maintained a professional distance, reverting to calling me "Mr. Jones" instead of "Mike."

I refocused on my work, hoping the office rumor mill would take a break.

A week later, after wrapping up a demanding project, the company organized a team-building event to unwind.

There, I saw Lisa's "guy bestie", Nate, again.

He was a well-dressed young man in his mid-twenties, wearing glasses and a crisp white shirt paired with a black suit, standing out among our less polished colleagues.

I glanced at him briefly and was about to look away when I heard some teasing from Lisa's team.

"Mrs. Jones lost the game! Drink, drink, drink!"

My heart leaped, and I quickly turned back.

Lisa looked troubled, clearly hesitant, but unwilling to refuse outright.

She had kept her pregnancy under wraps from the company, fearing they might sideline her if it came to light.

Just as I was about to intervene, Nate stepped in and took the drink from Lisa's hand.

"I'll drink this one for her," he announced, then downed it in one swift move. As he placed the glass down, he shot a defiant look my way.
