Chapter 1 of After My Partner Married the Office Maid

The HR office smelled like burnt coffee and toner. I stood at the counter with my annual review folder tucked under one arm, watching Janet from payroll shuffle through a stack of forms. She had that look people get when they're about to deliver bad news and want you to figure it out yourself first.

"So," she said, not meeting my eyes. "Your review looks fine, Tessa. But there's been a change to the permanent staff roster this cycle."

I pressed my thumbnail into my index finger. "A change."

"The position went to Sloane Barnes." Janet slid a printed roster across the counter. "She started her permanent contract last Monday."

I looked at the paper. My name wasn't on it. Sloane's was, right there in the slot Bryson had promised me for two years running. The fluorescent lights hummed overhead. Someone's printer jammed in the back office.

"I see," I said.

Janet pulled another form from the stack. "And you'll need to update your emergency contact information. You're still listed under Bryson Cooper's file, but he's changed his primary contacts."

She turned the page toward me. Bryson's benefits form. I read it twice because the first time didn't make sense.

Emergency Contact: Sloane Barnes.

Insurance Beneficiary: Sloane Barnes.

Spouse: Sloane Barnes.

The white crescent under my thumbnail turned red. I didn't feel it.

"Is there anything else?" I asked.

Janet looked uncomfortable. "That's all. Just sign the acknowledgment and you're good."

I signed. My handwriting looked normal. I walked out with my folder and stood in the parking lot under a sky so wide and empty it made my chest hurt. The West Texas wind kicked up dust that stuck to my lips.

I called Bryson.

Two rings. Then a woman's voice, warm and slow like honey.

"He's in the shower, honey. Want me to pass a message?"

I hung up.

I got in my car and drove. Not back to the housing unit. Not to Bryson's office. I drove twenty minutes to the Greyhound station in town, a squat building with peeling paint and a vending machine that only took exact change. Inside, the departure board flickered.

New York City. One way. Last bus: 9:47 PM.

I stood there long enough that the woman behind the counter asked if I needed help. I told her no. I memorized the schedule. Then I got back in my car and drove to the station, because I told myself I owed him a conversation. I told myself I would hear his explanation first.

I found him outside his office that evening, keys in hand, already walking toward the parking lot. I called his name and he stopped, turning with that look he got when I interrupted his schedule.

"Hey," he said. "What's up?"

"I went to HR today," I said. "I saw the roster."

He sighed. "Tessa—"

"Sloane got the permanent position. The one you told me was mine."

"She was the most qualified candidate." He said it like he was reading from a script. "You know how competitive these slots are."

"And the benefits paperwork," I said. "She's listed as your spouse."

He ran his hand through his hair. "That's an administrative convenience. Her work visa needed a sponsor. It doesn't mean anything."

"It means something to HR."

"You're being jealous," he said, and his voice had an edge now. "Sloane needed help and I helped her. That's what people do. You should be supportive instead of making this about you."

I looked at him. At the man I followed to this place. The man I cooked for and cleaned for and waited for. The man who promised me a future and gave it to someone else on a piece of paper.

"I gave up New York for you," I said quietly.

"And I've been building a life for us." He checked his watch. "Can we talk about this later? I have a meeting."

He walked away. Just turned and walked, like I was a subordinate who'd overstepped in a staff review.

I stood in the parking lot dust until the sun dropped behind the rigs.

The next morning I went to the break room for coffee. I heard the laughter before I reached the door. Bryson's voice, easy and warm, the way it used to sound when we were in college and everything was still good.

I stopped in the doorway.

Carla from logistics was leaning against the counter, grinning. "I'm just saying, Tessa's basically your live-in maid at this point. Did she forget to negotiate a salary?"

The room laughed. Bryson smiled, that deflecting smile he used when he didn't want to deal with something directly.

"Honestly," he said, "my relationship with Sloane might be more real than anyone thinks."

More laughter. Louder this time.

I turned and walked back down the hall. Nobody saw me. Nobody ever did.

I went to my desk, opened my bottom drawer, and pulled out the folder where I kept my important documents. Birth certificate. Passport. College diploma. I put them in my bag.

Then I opened my phone and bought a one-way ticket to New York.

Last bus. 9:47 PM.

I had twelve hours.
