Chapter 1 of After My Mate Rejected Me, I Exposed His Pack

The mind-link cracked open at four-seventeen in the morning, and I was carrying a crate of flour.

I felt it before I heard it—a hot, careless pulse against the inside of my skull, the kind of leak that happens when someone forgets an Omega is still tuned to the channel. Michaela's voice bled through first, wordless, a satisfied hum threaded with heat. Then Hudson's answering pulse, low and unmistakable, the private frequency I had only ever felt during his stolen nights in my quarters.

The crate hit the corridor floor. Flour bloomed white across my boots.

Inside my chest, my wolf went rigid. Not a growl. Not a howl. Rigid, like something struck too hard to move. The link snapped shut a heartbeat later—someone remembering, someone laughing—but the shape of what I had felt was already inside me, sitting on my ribs like a stone.

I stood in the dark corridor with my hands shaking and did the only thing three years had taught me to do. I picked the crate back up. I kept walking.

---

Hudson was waiting at the pack house door when I came in.

"You're up early, sweetheart." His voice was warm, easy, the Alpha register softened for me the way it always was in doorways. He reached to brush flour from my sleeve.

I smelled it before his hand landed.

Jasmine. Thick, floral, still damp at the edges—Michaela's scent draped over the cedar and winter rain I had loved for three years like a coat someone had thrown on in a hurry. It sat on his throat. It sat in the hollow behind his ear where I used to press my face.

My wolf did not howl. She had already gone quiet in the corridor. The quiet only deepened.

I looked up at Hudson. He was smiling. His eyes were soft. He was so good at this that for a half-second I almost believed him, and that half-second was the thing that finally broke something loose in me.

"Morning," I said.

I walked past him.

In my quarters I closed the door, slid my hand under the pillow, and pulled out the moonstone pendant. Three years I had slept with it against my heart. I held it in my palm and waited for grief to arrive. Nothing came. Only the quiet, and the pendant's small cool weight.

I set it on the windowsill in a patch of gray light. Not thrown. Not hidden. Just—out.

---

The bonfire was three nights later.

The pack gathered for the pre-patrol ritual, warriors in loose rows, the fire cracking sparks up into a sky that smelled of pine and wet stone. Michaela stood at Hudson's right hand with her fingertips trailing his forearm, slow, showy. Her eyes found mine across the flames and held.

Hudson lifted his chin.

"I, Hudson Palmer, Alpha of Ironveil Pack—"

My stomach dropped before my mind caught up.

"—reject you, Saoirse Gray, as my mate and future Luna."

The mark on my neck lit up like someone had pressed a coal to it. White-hot, blinding, my knees folding before I could stop them. Then—faster than a breath—the heat pulled out of the skin and left something colder than winter behind. Empty. Like a door closing on an empty room. Like a lamp going out in a house no one lives in anymore.

My wolf did not scream. She fell. I felt her fall inside me, a long silent drop into a place I could not follow.

Michaela smiled. Her fingers tightened on Hudson's sleeve.

I got my legs under me. I do not know how. I turned—slowly, deliberately, because if I moved fast I would fall—and walked back toward the pack house on borrowed bones. Behind me, in the corner of my eye, Hudson's thumb pressed against the inside of his wrist. The tell. He was running numbers even now.

I let him.

---

In the morning I walked into the common room during breakfast.

Forty faces lifted. Forks paused. The room went to that specific brand of silence packs achieve when they are hoping something ugly is about to happen and they will not have to be the ones who started it.

I crossed to the Alpha table. I picked up the water pitcher.

Hudson looked up just in time for the ice water to hit him full in the face.

Michaela came out of her chair with her hand cocked, claws already half-extended. I caught her wrist mid-swing. I held it. Three seconds—counted deliberately, because I wanted her to feel the exact length of what an Omega should not be able to do. Her arm strained against mine and did not move. Her eyes widened.

I let go.

"I'll leave Ironveil," I said to the room. My voice was level. "On my own terms. Not yours."

I walked out. Behind me I heard Michaela's chair scrape. Heard her hand rise. In the doorway I glanced back, once, and saw her fingers pressed to the base of her throat—the place a Luna's mark would sit—and saw them trembling.

---

In my quarters I spread the kitchen parchment flat on the floor.

My wolf was still silent. I could feel her, though, curled small and stunned in the dark behind my ribs. Not dead. Only waiting.

I wrote two words at the top of the page.

*Not yet.*

Then I reached under the loose floorboard, pulled out the secure handset I had kept dormant for three years, and opened a line to Nighthollow.

Yasmin picked up on the second ring.

"What time do I arrive?" she said.
