Chapter 1 of After My Mate Murdered Our Child, I Rose Again

The bond broke at 2:47 on a Tuesday morning—not all at once, but in the way ice cracks under weight you didn't know was there.

I wasn't supposed to hear it. The mind-link between Massimo and his Beta wasn't meant for me. I was wheeling myself toward the kitchen because sleep had become something other people did, and the pack house corridor was dark enough that I thought I was alone.

Then Massimo's voice slid into my head—not through our mate bond, which had gone quiet and cold since Oliver died, but through the open channel he kept with Darian. He must have forgotten to close it. Or he didn't think it mattered. After all, what was I going to do? I couldn't even shift anymore.

"The rogue ambush worked exactly as planned," Massimo said, his tone calm and businesslike. "Selene's wolf went dormant just like Victoria said it would. A lesson delivered. Clean."

My hands stopped moving on the wheelchair. The corridor tilted.

Darian's response came slower, cautious. "You're certain this was necessary, Alpha? The pup—"

"Was collateral," Massimo cut in. "Victoria needed justice for what Selene did to her in their youth. I provided it. The pack is stronger without weak links."

The mate mark on my neck—the one that used to hum warm whenever Massimo was near—turned to ice. Not the ice of winter. The ice of something dead.

I sat in the dark and felt my wolf stir for the first time in a year. Not a whimper. Not the broken thing that had curled up and died the night Oliver's body came home in pieces. This was different. This was heat rising through frozen ground.

The mind-link dropped. Massimo's presence in my head vanished like he'd slammed a door.

I didn't scream. I didn't move. I pressed my thumb against the mark scar on my neck—the habit I'd developed over four years of being his Luna—and felt nothing but cold skin and the rhythm of my own pulse.

He commissioned it. He ordered the ambush. He killed Oliver.

Not rogues acting on their own. Not some random act of violence I'd spent a year trying to make sense of. Massimo. My mate. The man who had held me while I sobbed over our son's empty bed. The man who had whispered that we would get through this together.

He did it for Victoria.

I wheeled myself back to my room. My hands were steady. That surprised me. I thought they should shake. I thought something in me should be breaking right now, the way it broke when they told me Oliver was gone.

But I didn't break. I sat on the edge of my bed and pulled Oliver's crayon drawings from my jacket pocket. Six of them, folded carefully, the edges soft from being carried everywhere. The last one showed three figures in a field—me, Massimo, Oliver. He hadn't finished it. He'd told me he was saving the sun for last.

I smoothed the drawing against my lap and looked at the three figures. Massimo's face was just a circle with two dots for eyes. Oliver had drawn him smiling.

The mate mark on my neck throbbed once, sharp and cold, like frostbite setting in.

I didn't sleep. I sat in the dark and rebuilt four years of my life around one truth: the man I loved had murdered our child. Every tender word after the ambush. Every time he'd held me while I cried. Every soft kiss to my forehead. All of it had been a performance over Oliver's grave.

By the time dawn light crept under my door, I had a plan.

I would not confront him. Not yet. I would watch. I would wait. I would gather what I needed. And when the moment came, I would make sure he understood exactly what he had taken from me.

My wolf stirred again, deeper this time, and I let her. For the first time in a year, I didn't push her away.

In the days that followed, I became a ghost wearing my own face. I smiled when Massimo entered a room. I nodded when he spoke. I attended pack functions in my wheelchair and let the others look at me with pity.

And I watched.

Victoria came to the pack house more often now. She moved through the halls like she already owned them, her hips swaying, her laugh too loud. Massimo tracked her with his eyes the way he used to track me. His body angled toward her even when he was speaking to someone else.

The first time I caught her scent up close, my wolf surged. It wasn't a natural scent. It was too sweet, too floral, with a synthetic edge underneath like something made in a lab. Roses that had never grown in soil.

My pupils dilated gold. I felt the shift trying to surface—my wolf clawing toward consciousness for the first time since the ambush. I locked it down through sheer will and smiled blandly at Victoria as she passed.

She didn't notice. Neither did Massimo.

I kept Oliver's drawings in my pocket. I kept the memory of that mind-link sharp and clear in my head. And I waited.

On the first anniversary of Oliver's death, Massimo called the pack to assembly.

I thought it would be a memorial. I wheeled myself to the front of the hall and positioned myself where I always did—beside the Alpha's chair, in the Luna's place.

Victoria stood on Massimo's other side. She wore white. Luna white.

My wolf went very, very still.

Massimo's voice rang out across the hall, formal and clear. "I, Massimo Greystone, Alpha of Shadowvale, reject you, Selene Ashford, as my mate and Luna."

The bond didn't break. It died.

The mark on my neck went ice-cold, then empty, like a door closing on a room that had already been abandoned. My knees buckled in the wheelchair. The pain was clean and absolute—a rib pulled from my chest without anesthesia, the space it left behind collapsing inward.

Victoria's mouth curved into a smile.

Massimo didn't look at me. He placed his hand on her shoulder and continued. "I claim Victoria Lane as my true fated mate and Cason as my rightful heir."

Every ranked wolf in the hall witnessed it. None of them moved.

My wolf exploded inside me—not broken anymore, not dormant. Heat and fury and something larger than I'd ever felt before. I locked it down with everything I had, my face blank, my hands gripping the wheelchair arms until my knuckles went white.

I would not give him the satisfaction of seeing me break.

I would not beg.

I wheeled myself out of the hall in silence. Behind me, I heard Victoria's laugh and the sound of the pack offering their congratulations.

In my room, I found the rejection acceptance papers on my desk. Massimo had already prepared them. Efficient as always.

I signed them with a hand that did not shake.

Then I folded them into my jacket pocket, right beside Oliver's drawings, and felt my wolf rise again—warm, insistent, no longer dormant.

This time, I didn't push her away.

I was done pushing.
