After My Mate Killed Our Unborn Pup Summary
Chapter 1 of After My Mate Killed Our Unborn Pup
At 8:42 on the night of the Harvest Banquet, Bryson Hunt took the microphone and handed ten years of my life away.
"The Silverfang alliance will secure our borders for a generation," Bryson announced to the packed hall. He raised his glass, smiling down from the dais. "And we owe it all to the brilliant diplomacy of Presley Wright. Ironholt’s future Luna."
The great hall erupted into cheers.
I stood frozen near the stone pillar. The Silverfang contract tucked into my coat had taken me six months of negotiations, three sleepless weeks at their border, and a debt called in from ancient ties Bryson knew nothing about. Presley hadn’t written a single line.
Now, she stepped up beside him. Her dress was cut down to her ribs, but what caught the firelight was the necklace at her throat: a raw, luminous moonstone pendant I had personally secured for the pack treasury two years ago.
I took two strides toward the dais. "Bryson."
He didn't blink. He looked at me like I was grease on his boot. His jaw tightened, and he pushed his power into the air—a heavy, suffocating weight designed to drop an unranked wolf to her knees.
*"Know your place, Alessia."*
The Alpha tone slammed into my chest. The room went dead silent. My knees locked. Pain flared behind my eyes, but deep inside my ribcage, something ancient snapped awake and snarled, shoving back against his command until my spine straightened.
I didn't kneel. I turned my back on the hall and walked out.
At midnight, I went to his private quarters to confront him. The heavy oak door was unlatched.
I pushed it open two inches. The scent hit me first—heavy vanilla oil and female sweat smeared thick over Bryson’s pine. Through the crack, by the glow of the hearth, I saw them entangled on the sheets. Presley’s head was thrown back, gasping, my moonstone pendant swinging against her bare collarbone as Bryson drove into her.
The mate bond inside my chest went suddenly, horribly silent. It was like a steel door slamming shut in an empty room, followed by a rush of rancid, greasy sickness.
I didn't yell. I didn't break the glass. I pressed my palm flat against the freezing stone doorframe, swallowed the acid in my throat, and walked back to my room.
Twenty minutes later, the sudden, violent nausea wasn't just heartbreak. I knelt over the porcelain basin in my bathroom, smelling the change in my own blood. Warm, sweet, and tiny. A spark of life.
I was pregnant with Bryson's pup.
At dawn, I walked into the pack assembly hall. Every elder and warrior was seated. Bryson sat on the high throne, Presley perched on the arm of his chair, smiling like a cat.
I walked to the center of the flagstones and dropped a thick leather ledger onto the stone floor. It hit with a loud crack.
"Under Ironholt pack law, section four," I said, my voice carrying clean and level across the room. "Ten years of documented territorial management entitles a departing wolf to their share of assets and land. I am leaving Ironholt today. I am taking my share."
A ripple of nervous murmurs went through the elders. Bryson's face turned red, then ugly. He wasn't going to let an unranked she-wolf embarrass him.
He stood up.
"You don't get to claim pack law, Alessia," he said, stepping down the dais. He stopped ten feet from me and raised his chin. "I, Bryson Hunt, Alpha of Ironholt Pack, reject you, Alessia Lawson, as my mate and Luna."
The words struck like a broadaxe between my ribs.
The mate mark on the left side of my neck split open. Searing cold rushed into the wound, black and freezing, tearing the soul-thread out by its roots. My vision went white. The agony ripped through my lower abdomen like barbed wire.
My knees hit the stone. Warm, heavy blood soaked through my skirt, pooling between my boots. The faint spark of life inside me flickered, choked on the shockwave of the severed bond, and went out.
I was miscarrying on the pack house floor, right in front of them all.
No one stepped forward. Not an elder. Not a healer. Not a single warrior whose wounds I had stitched with my own hands.
Bryson didn't even look down at the blood. He turned back to the dais, lifted the silver Luna crown from its velvet pillow, and set it carefully onto Presley’s dark hair. Presley looked at me over his shoulder, her painted mouth curving into a smirk.
"You think you're leaving with land?" Bryson sneered, turning his back to me.
Trembling, I forced my bloody hands into my coat pocket and pulled out the small brass cylinder containing the master formula for the border ward-scents. Before he could turn around, I crushed it beneath my heel against the stone, snapping the vial inside.
"The northern wards fail at midnight, Bryson," I whispered through the blood on my teeth. "Let's see how long your pack survives without my ghost."
Bryson’s jaw twitched. He raised his hand and pointed toward the heavy iron exit doors.
"Drag her to the border," he ordered. Two scarred enforcers stepped forward, their heavy boots splashing into my blood as their hands locked around my arms.
