Chapter 1 of After My Mate Humiliated Me, I Became Lycan Royalty

The ceremonial furs settled across my shoulders at exactly 9:47 p.m., and I smelled her.

Cheap magnolia. Layered beneath Callahan's cedarwood like a stain that wouldn't wash out. The scent clung to the fabric meant to carry only our paired bond-scent, only ours, and my stomach dropped so fast I tasted bile.

I turned to search his face. The packhouse was silent behind us, every ranked wolf watching, waiting for the final vow that would make me Luna in title as well as labor. Three years I'd waited for this. Three years of managing alliances he couldn't negotiate, training warriors he couldn't command, holding together a pack that would have fractured without me.

"Callahan—" I started.

He stepped back. Faced the assembled pack. And spoke.

"I, Callahan, Alpha of Ironveil, reject you, Scarlett Hayes, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck split open.

Not metaphorically. It cracked like ice breaking, a line of cold fire that bled outward from the center, and I felt my aura fracture in real time—heard the collective inhale from every wolf present as the bond that had held us for three years shattered into nothing.

My knees tried to buckle. The biological shockwave hit like a fist to the sternum, punching the air from my lungs, and for one terrible second I couldn't breathe, couldn't think, couldn't do anything but feel the severing rip through me like a blade.

I pressed my thumbnail into my palm. Hard. Until it drew blood.

The pain was small. Sharp. Real. It gave me something to anchor to that wasn't the gaping absence where the bond used to be.

I straightened my spine to steel.

Then I slapped him.

Full strength. Across the face. The crack echoed through the hall like a gunshot, and Callahan's head snapped sideways, his eyes going wide with shock. Someone behind me gasped. I didn't care.

"I, Scarlett Hayes," I said, and my voice came out low, measured, precise, "accept your rejection."

The ritual words locked into place. Final. Irreversible.

I turned and walked.

Not ran. Walked. Every step deliberate, my head high, my shoulders back, even as the severed bond bled cold down my spine and my wolf howled inside me—a sound of rage, not grief, because she at least understood what I was only beginning to grasp.

He'd planned this. The delayed ceremony. The ceremonial furs that reeked of another woman. The public rejection before the entire pack.

He'd wanted me humiliated.

I made it to the tree line before my knees finally gave out.

I collapsed against a pine trunk, both hands pressed over the mark that was still bleeding—actual blood now, thin and cold, soaking into my collar. The bond severance crashed through me in waves, each one worse than the last, my wolf snarling and clawing inside my chest like she was trying to tear her way out.

I bit down on my lip until I tasted copper. Forced myself to breathe.

I would not break here. Not where someone might see.

Behind me, through the trees, I heard the packhouse doors open. Voices. Callahan's voice, loud and clear, carrying across the clearing.

"I present to you Sienna Bennett, my chosen Luna."

Chosen.

The word was a knife between my ribs.

I pressed harder against the tree, my nails digging into bark, and made myself listen. Made myself hear the polite applause, the murmured congratulations, the seamless transition from one Luna to another as if I had never existed at all.

Sienna's voice drifted out next, soft and trembling and perfectly calculated. "Thank you all for welcoming me. I know I have big shoes to fill..."

No. She didn't.

Because no one in that hall knew how big those shoes actually were. No one except me.

I pushed myself upright. My legs shook, but they held.

I had three years of treaty records hidden in my quarters. Handwritten. Timestamped. Witnessed. Every alliance I'd brokered while Callahan took credit, every negotiation I'd salvaged when his arrogance nearly cost us allies, every warrior rotation I'd designed to cover the weaknesses he refused to acknowledge.

If I was leaving, I was taking the proof with me.

I moved through the forest parallel to the packhouse, staying in the shadows, my wolf's night vision cutting through the dark. The mark on my neck throbbed with every heartbeat, a constant reminder of what I'd just lost, but I shoved the pain down and kept moving.

My quarters were on the east side. Ground floor. I'd chosen them specifically because they had a window that opened onto the training grounds, away from the main entrance.

I reached the window and paused, listening.

Silence.

Everyone was still inside, celebrating the new Luna.

I slipped through the window, landed softly on the floor, and went straight to the loose floorboard beneath my bed. The records were there, wrapped in oilcloth, exactly where I'd left them. I pulled them out, tucked them into my travel pack along with a change of clothes and the emergency cash I kept hidden.

Then I heard footsteps in the hall.

I froze.

The footsteps stopped outside my door. A pause. Then Callahan's voice, muffled but unmistakable.

"Make sure she's gone by morning. I don't want her here when the council arrives."

Council.

My stomach twisted.

A second voice responded—Sienna's, higher, softer. "What if she tries to contest the rejection?"

"She won't." Callahan's tone was dismissive. "She's too proud. And even if she does, who's going to believe her over me?"

Footsteps retreated.

I waited until the hall went silent again, then slipped back out the window and into the night.

By dawn, I was two hours out from Ironveil, heading toward the only place Callahan's Alpha tone couldn't reach: my mother's cabin on the edge of Silverfang territory.

I didn't know yet that Sienna had already sent falsified testimony to the council.

I didn't know the trap had already closed behind me.

All I knew was that the bond was gone, the pack was lost, and I was walking into the dark with nothing but my own name and a pack full of records no one thought I'd kept.

It would have to be enough.
