Chapter 1 of After My Husband Tried to Harvest My Kidney

I smelled her perfume before I saw her.

Something floral and expensive drifted through the penthouse the moment I pushed open the front door. I stood in the foyer with my keys still in my hand, my coat half off my shoulders, and I breathed it in. Foreign. Wrong.

Then I walked into the living room and understood.

She was on my sofa.

She sat with her legs folded beneath her, wrapped in a cream cashmere blanket that I had never seen before, a blanket someone must have brought for her. She was beautiful in the way that certain things are beautiful — deliberately, carefully, like a painting staged to be looked at. Her dark hair fell loose around her shoulders. Her skin was pale. Her eyes, when they lifted to mine, were large and soft and full of something that looked like sorrow but landed wrong, the way a note played slightly off-key lands wrong even when you can't immediately name why.

Maddox stood behind her with his hand on her shoulder.

He was in a charcoal suit. No tie. He had the look he wore in boardrooms when he had already decided the outcome of a meeting — composed, certain, faintly bored by the formality of what was about to happen. His cufflinks caught the light as he moved, and he reached forward and slid a folder across the marble countertop toward me.

Divorce papers. I knew what they were before I touched them.

"Eleanor." His voice was level. "This is Cheyenne. She's going to be staying here."

I looked at the woman on my sofa. She gave me a small, pained smile. Apologetic. Practiced.

Cheyenne Baker. I knew the name. I had heard it once, two years into our marriage, when Maddox had too much whiskey at a company dinner and said it quietly into his glass like a prayer he thought no one could hear. His college sweetheart. The one who left. The ghost I had spent five years pretending I wasn't competing with.

She was back. And she was in my living room. And my husband's hand was on her shoulder.

The air in the room turned to glass.

"She's been abroad," Maddox continued, as if he were presenting a business case, as if I were a board member who required data. "She came back because she's sick. Terminal kidney failure." He paused. "She needs a transplant."

I set my keys down on the counter. Very slowly. The click of metal on marble was the only sound in the room.

"Sign the papers," he said.

I looked up at him. The man I had loved since I was twenty-two years old. The man I had watched build a company from a one-room office and a borrowed laptop, never knowing that every door that opened for him had been quietly unlocked by my family's money. The man who had mocked the plain platinum ring I gave him at our wedding, who had called me a small-town nobody in front of his colleagues at last year's Christmas party and laughed when they laughed.

I had forgiven all of it. Every single word.

"And the kidney," he added. His tone didn't change. "It's the least you can do. I gave you everything when I married you. You had nothing before me."

On the sofa, Cheyenne pressed a tissue to the corner of her eye. Her shoulders curved inward. The portrait of a woman too fragile to ask for what she needed, too good to want to cause pain. It was a perfect performance. I almost admired it.

Almost.

Something moved through me then. It started in my hands — a trembling so fine it was almost invisible — and then it rose through my chest and kept rising, and somewhere between one breath and the next it stopped being trembling and became something else entirely. Something cold. Something clear.

I crossed the room.

I slapped Maddox across the face hard enough to turn his head.

The sound cracked through the penthouse like a gunshot. He stumbled back one step. His hand flew to his cheek. He stared at me with an expression I had never seen on him before — not anger, not shock, but something slower and more deliberate. Something that had been waiting.

I didn't stop. I turned and crossed to the sofa.

Cheyenne's eyes went wide. The tissue dropped from her fingers.

I slapped her too.

She made a small, sharp sound. Her perfect hair swung forward across her face.

The room was absolutely silent.

Maddox said nothing. He straightened his jacket. He adjusted his cufflinks — one, then the other, the small precise motion I had watched him make a hundred times before bad news — and then he reached into his pocket and took out his phone.

He made a call. Four words. I didn't catch them.

Within the hour, I was in the underground garage with one bag in my hand and nowhere near the exit. They came from both sides. Four men in dark clothing, moving fast and quiet. Marcus Thorne — Maddox's head of security, a broad-shouldered man with a soldier's stillness and flat, professional eyes — stepped in front of me.

My phone was gone before I could unlock it.

The bag was taken from my hand.

The blacked-out vehicle was already running.

No one on the street saw a thing.
