Chapter 1 of After My Husband Stole Our Son, I Wanted Revenge

I pressed my ear against the heating vent, the metal cold against my skin. The voices from the master bedroom above drifted down, muffled but clear enough. Derek's deep timbre and Kathryn's lighter tone, both tinged with amusement. They were laughing.

"Can you believe she still buys it?" Kathryn's voice, crisp as winter air. "The little basement pet actually thinks you rescued her from that fire."

My breath caught. I'd heard them wrong. I must have.

"Eight years, and she hasn't questioned a thing," Derek replied, his tone casual, as if discussing the weather. "Sometimes I almost feel guilty."

"Don't," Kathryn said sharply. "The fire was your design, remember? Her family died so we could secure a lookalike surrogate. She's served her purpose. Hayes is ours now."

The world tilted. My knees hit the concrete floor. I pressed my palm against the vent to steady myself, my heart hammering so hard I thought it might shatter my ribs.

"She still asks about the sky," Derek said, a strange note in his voice. "About when she'll see it again."

"And she never will," Kathryn replied. "Not on our watch."

Their laughter faded as they moved away from the vent. I remained frozen, my ear still pressed to the metal, waiting for more. But there was only silence.

I crawled back to my bed, a narrow mattress on a frame bolted to the wall. Eight years. Eight years of believing Derek had saved me. Eight years of loving him, of bearing his son, of waiting for the day he'd let me out of this basement.

It had all been a lie.

I didn't cry. I didn't scream. I simply sat there, my mind racing through every memory, every moment I'd shared with Derek. The books he'd brought me. The hours he'd spent in this basement, talking to me, making love to me. Had any of it been real?

By dawn, I had my answer. None of it had been real. I was never his lover. I was his prisoner. His tool.

Three facts crystallized in my mind: I must take Hayes. I must escape. And the man I loved for eight years had murdered my family.

I waited for my chance. When Derek left on a business trip, I made my move. For months, I'd been studying the electronic lock on my door, watching the guards, noting the patterns. I'd fashioned a tool from a wire stripped from a book binding and practiced the technique in secret.

The lock shorted with a quiet sizzle. The door opened.

I slipped into the main house for the first time in years. The brightness of the upstairs world made my eyes water. I found Hayes's room, decorated with expensive toys and framed photos of him with Kathryn and Derek.

Hayes sat on the floor, playing with a model airplane. My heart ached at the sight of him. My son. My beautiful boy.

"Hayes," I whispered, kneeling beside him. "I'm your real mother. I love you. We need to leave."

He stared at me, his eyes—my eyes—wide with confusion, then horror.

"You're the crazy stranger," he whispered, his voice trembling. "You're not my mommy. My mommy is upstairs."

Before I could respond, he pressed a button on his wristwatch. An alarm blared. Guards burst into the room, grabbing me, dragging me back to the basement.

Derek returned early from his trip. He didn't ask why I'd tried to escape. He didn't ask why I'd gone to Hayes. He simply installed a second lock on my door and cut my meals in half.

Weeks passed. I heard them planning Hayes's seventh birthday party at their Hamptons estate. I heard the codes for the staff entrance, memorized them.

I escaped again, this time through the drainage basin I'd discovered during a rare moment alone. I stole a catering uniform from a service van and slipped into the party through the staff entrance.

The Hamptons estate was a sprawling mansion with manicured lawns that stretched down to the ocean. Children played on the grass, their laughter carrying on the summer breeze. I kept my head down, moving among the staff, searching for Hayes.

I spotted him by the pool, his dark hair catching the sunlight. My heart swelled. He was beautiful, so beautiful.

He turned, his eyes scanning the crowd. They landed on me.

"There she is!" he screamed, pointing at me. "The crazy stranger! She's here!"

Kathryn appeared beside him, her face a mask of concern. "What's wrong, darling?" she asked, though her eyes gleamed with triumph.

"Her," Hayes said, still pointing at me. "She's the bad lady. She tried to hurt me."

Kathryn's lips curved into a smile. "Oh, darling, don't be scared. Let's play a game to help you feel better."

She turned to the other children, her voice bright. "Who wants to play a special birthday game?"

The children cheered. Kathryn gestured to two guards, who seized my arms. She blindfolded the children and handed them darts.

"Throw the darts at the target," she instructed. "It's a special game to make the bad lady go away."

I struggled against the guards, but they held me firm, positioning me against a target board. The first dart struck my arm. Then another hit my shoulder. Pain bloomed, but I bit back my cry.

Dart after dart struck me, some glancing off, others sinking deep. I felt the warm trickle of blood down my arms, my ribs. Through the haze of pain, I saw Kathryn watching, her smile serene.

Derek appeared, coming from the house. He took in the scene—the children, the darts, me bleeding against the target board.

"Enough," he said, his voice cold. "Take her back."

The guards dragged me away, not to a hospital, but back to Manhattan. Back to the basement.

As they locked the door, I caught a glimpse of Derek's face. For a moment, something flickered in his eyes—regret? Shame? I couldn't tell. But it didn't matter. I knew the truth now. And I would never forget.
