Chapter 1 of After My Husband Left Me During Brain Surgery

The words hung in the sterile air of Dr. Chen's office like a physical presence. I stared at the MRI scan in my trembling hands, the large white mass in my brain staring back at me with terrifying finality.

"I'm sorry, Ruby," Dr. Chen said, her voice gentle but clinical. "The tumor is quite large. We need to operate as soon as possible."

I nodded mechanically, unable to form words. My fingers traced the edge of the scan, as if I could somehow make the tumor smaller through touch. Ten years of loving Levi, and now this—a death sentence delivered in a beige room with fluorescent lights that made everything look washed out and unreal.

"Is someone coming with you?" Dr. Chen asked, glancing at the door.

"Yes," I whispered, though I wasn't sure. I'd called Levi three times already. Each call went straight to voicemail.

I tried again as Dr. Chen stepped out to give me a moment. This time, he answered.

"Ruby, I'm in a meeting," he said, his voice clipped and impatient.

"Levi, please," I said, my voice breaking. "I need you. The doctor just confirmed—"

"I'm on my way," he cut me off. "Give me twenty minutes."

Those twenty minutes stretched to forty-five. I sat alone in that sterile room, watching other patients with their spouses, parents, friends—people who weren't facing their mortality alone.

When Levi finally arrived, he was checking his watch. His perfectly tailored suit looked out of place among the hospital's utilitarian furnishings.

"What's going on?" he asked, not meeting my eyes.

I held out the scan. "I have a brain tumor, Levi. They need to operate soon."

Something flickered across his face—discomfort? Annoyance? But it vanished so quickly I couldn't be sure.

"Ruby," he said, his voice suddenly businesslike. "There's something I need to tell you."

Something in his tone made my stomach drop.

"Lilliana and I are getting married," he continued, reaching into his jacket pocket. "I've been meaning to tell you, but..."

The words hit me like a physical blow. I struggled to breathe as he pulled out a check and slid it across the desk toward me.

"I know this isn't easy," he said, not sounding like he knew anything of the sort. "But this should help with the transition. Five million should cover everything."

I stared at the check, the numbers swimming before my eyes. Ten years of my life reduced to a business transaction.

"Transition?" I whispered.

"This is a severance package," he said, as if that clarified everything. "For your services."

I felt something inside me crack.

---

The penthouse—our penthouse—felt different when I returned. Colder somehow, despite the warm afternoon light streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

I heard voices before I saw them. Lilliana's laugh, high and brittle, echoed through the space.

"The bedroom needs completely redone," she was saying. "And all this clutter needs to go."

I stepped into the living room to find her directing movers, pointing at my bookshelves, my art pieces, my life.

"Oh," she said when she saw me, her surprise not reaching her eyes. "You're still here."

"Ruby," Levi said, appearing from the bedroom. "You're packing?"

"I just got the diagnosis today," I said, one last desperate attempt to reach him. "The tumor is—"

"Yes, you mentioned something about that," he cut me off. "Are you using this to try to change my mind?"

Lilliana snickered behind him.

"No," I said quietly, the fight draining out of me. "I just thought you should know."

"Well, now you know my news too," he replied, checking his phone as if our conversation was an inconvenience.

I moved mechanically through the rooms, gathering my clothes, my mother's jewelry, the few things that were truly mine. Lilliana watched with barely concealed satisfaction.

"Don't forget to leave your key," she called as I reached the door.

I placed it on the counter without a word, the metal cold against my palm.

---

The jazz bar was dark and cool, a refuge from the chaos outside. I slid onto a barstool, my hands still shaking.

"Ruby," the owner said, his voice a low rumble of recognition. "Haven't seen you in a while."

He poured me a whiskey without asking, sliding it across the polished wood.

"Bad day?" he asked, noticing my pale face.

I took a sip, letting the burn of alcohol steady my nerves. "I have a brain tumor," I whispered, the words feeling surreal even as I spoke them.

He didn't offer empty platitudes or pity. Instead, he leaned against the bar, his weathered face thoughtful.

"And Levi?" he asked, knowing we always came together.

"Gave me a check," I said, pulling it from my pocket. "Five million dollars to disappear from his life."

The owner shook his head slowly. "What are you going to do?"

"I don't know," I admitted, tears finally spilling over.

"Seems to me," he said carefully, "that money could buy you more than just a new place to live."

I looked up, confused.

"It could buy you a chance," he continued. "To save your life. To find out who you are without him."

Something shifted inside me as I stared at the check. For the first time since seeing the scan, I felt something other than fear.

"What's your name?" I asked him suddenly.

He smiled. "Jack."

"Jack," I repeated, "I think you're right."
