Chapter 1 of After My Husband Hid Our Son From Me

I went into Rylan's study to find the insurance papers. He'd asked me to pull them for the accountant. Simple task. The kind of thing I'd done a hundred times in six years of marriage.

The drawer was unlocked. That should have been my first warning.

I moved folders aside — property deeds, investment statements, the usual architecture of wealth. Then my fingers brushed something different. A medical folder. Pediatric, from the weight of it. I pulled it out slowly.

The name on the tab read: Finley Cole. Age six.

My hands started shaking before my brain caught up.

I opened it. Vaccination records. Growth charts. A prescription for an inhaler dated three months ago. And clipped to the inside cover, a photograph. A boy with dark hair and Rylan's jawline. Cole eyes. The same shade of gray-blue I saw every morning across the breakfast table.

I stopped breathing.

The room tilted. I gripped the edge of the desk. The wood was cool and solid under my palms. Real. The photograph was real. The medical records were real.

Finley was real.

I don't know how long I stood there. Long enough for the sun to shift across the Persian rug. Long enough for my legs to start trembling.

I put the folder back exactly where I'd found it. Closed the drawer. Walked out of the study. My feet made no sound on the marble floor.

I needed to see him. Not the photograph. Him.

I spent the next two hours moving through the house like a ghost. I checked the west wing first — the guest suites, the conservatory, the morning room. Nothing. Then I remembered the east courtyard. Demi liked it there. She said the afternoon light was good for reading.

I positioned myself behind one of the stone columns near the terrace doors. The kind of column that's been holding up Cole family architecture for three generations. I pressed my back against it and waited.

Twenty minutes later, Demi came out through the garden doors. She wasn't alone.

A boy walked beside her. Six years old, maybe a little tall for his age. Dark hair that needed cutting. He wore jeans and a blue sweater. He carried a backpack covered in dinosaur patches.

He was perfect.

Demi set a plate of apple slices and crackers on the garden table. The boy climbed into a chair and pulled out a workbook. Demi sat across from him, correcting his posture with one hand on his shoulder. He flinched slightly. She smiled and said something I couldn't hear.

I pressed both palms flat against the stone behind me. The surface was rough. It scraped my skin. I needed the pain. I needed something to anchor me because everything inside my chest was breaking apart.

That was my son.

My son, who I was told died hours after birth. My son, who I held once — just once, for maybe thirty seconds before the nurses took him away and came back with faces like closed doors. My son, whose name I whispered into the dark for months afterward until Rylan told me I needed to stop. That grief was natural but obsession was not. That I was making it harder on myself.

My son, who had been alive this entire time. Ten feet from my bedroom. Eating meals in the same house. Breathing the same air.

I watched Demi lean over his workbook. She pointed at something. He nodded. She touched his hair. He didn't pull away.

I stayed behind that column until Demi gathered the plate and the backpack and led him inside. I stayed until the courtyard was empty and the light turned gold. I stayed until I could move without screaming.

Then I walked back into the house. Up the stairs. Down the hall to the library where Rylan kept his evening scotch.

He came home at seven. I heard his car in the drive. His footsteps in the foyer. The low murmur of him speaking to staff.

I was sitting in the leather chair by the window when he walked in.

"Selene." He set his briefcase down. "You look pale. Are you feeling all right?"

"I found the folder," I said.

He went very still. Not frozen. Just still. The way he always did before something bad happened.

"What folder."

"Finley's medical records. In your desk."

For one second — maybe less — something cracked in his face. Something that looked almost like remorse. Then it closed. Smooth as a door locking.

"Selene—"

"I saw him," I said. My voice was shaking now. Six years of grief rising all at once. "I saw him in the courtyard with Demi. He's alive. Our son is alive and you—"

"Stop." Rylan's voice was calm. Too calm. "You need to stop."

"You told me he died—"

"He did."

I stared at him.

"The loss broke something in you," Rylan said quietly. He walked to his desk. Picked up his phone. "Something you never recovered from. I've been managing it. Quietly. But this—" He gestured at me like I was evidence. "This is exactly the kind of delusion I was afraid of."

"I'm not delusional. I saw—"

He made a phone call. I was still talking. He wasn't listening.

Two men arrived within the hour. I'd never seen them before. They wore suits. They spoke gently. One of them called me ma'am.

Rylan signed something. A document with letterhead I couldn't read from where they held me.

They restrained me carefully. Professionally. Like I was fragile. Like they were helping.

The car was black. The interior smelled like leather and disinfectant. We drove north. Through gates. Past trees. Up a long drive to a building that looked more like a hotel than a hospital.

Dr. Patricia Holt met us at the entrance. She had kind eyes. She shook Rylan's hand. She signed papers. She called me Mrs. Cole and told me everything was going to be fine.

As the car pulled away, I turned and looked back through the rear window.

Demi was standing on the front steps of the Cole estate. Finley's hand in hers. Both of them watching the taillights disappear into the dark.
