After My Husband Helped Cover Up My Parents’ Murder Summary

Eve spent a Seattle winter shivering in a coat worn shiny at the elbows, because Garrett swore four hundred dollars for a radiator repair was money they didn't have. He said it gently, every week, in a hundred small ways. Then Eve learns the truth: the man who rationed her warmth helped cover up her parents' murder. Every cold night and careful lie about money served one purpose—keeping her from the truth buried beneath their marriage. Now the coldest winter of her life is about to get darker.

Chapter 1 of After My Husband Helped Cover Up My Parents’ Murder

The radiator in our apartment died in November. Garrett said the repair guy wanted four hundred dollars, and four hundred dollars was four hundred dollars.

So on the coldest night of the Seattle winter, I sat on the edge of our bed in two sweaters and the thin gray coat I'd owned since Columbia. The sleeves were worn shiny at the elbows. I'd asked for a new one in October. Garrett had looked at me the way you look at a child asking for candy at a funeral.

"Eve," he'd said. "We're stretched thin. You know that."

I knew that. He told me that every week, in a hundred small ways. No new shoes. No dinners out. No trip back to New York, not even for the memorial service Diana offered to help me plan. We're stretched thin.

Ethan was asleep down the hall with two blankets on him. I'd checked twice. Outside, the rain came sideways off Elliott Bay and hit the window like gravel.

Garrett's phone was on the nightstand, face up.

I wasn't snooping. I want that on the record, even if the only person keeping the record is me. It buzzed, and I looked, the way you look when a phone buzzes eighteen inches from your hand.

The banner sat there in clean white letters.

Wire transfer completed. $800,000.00. Recipient account ending 4471.

I read it four times. The numbers didn't rearrange themselves. Eight hundred thousand dollars. We were stretched thin, and eight hundred thousand dollars had walked out of somewhere and into an account I'd never heard of.

My hands went cold in a way that had nothing to do with the radiator.

Garrett came out of the bathroom with a towel around his neck, humming. He'd been humming a lot lately. I used to love that about him. In our first apartment, he hummed while he made eggs, and I thought it was the sound of a happy man.

"Garrett." My voice came out thin. I hated that. I made myself hold up the phone. "What is this?"

He glanced at it. That's all. A glance, the length of a heartbeat, and then he was toweling his hair again.

"That's business."

"Eight hundred thousand dollars is business?"

"That's what business looks like when you're not the one doing it."

I stood up. My knees were stiff from the cold. "We don't have eight hundred thousand dollars. You told me last week we couldn't cover Ethan's dentist without moving things around."

"It's not our money. It's a pass-through." He said it easily, without looking at me. "Client funds. It sits in an account for a day and it goes out. You want me to draw you a diagram?"

"I want you to tell me whose account it went to."

And then he did look at me. He crossed the room and did the thing he does, the thing he's done since I was twenty and standing in the rain on 114th Street. He tucked a piece of my hair behind my ear. His fingers were warm. Mine weren't.

"You know what I think?" His voice went soft and reasonable and kind. "I think you haven't slept a full night since the accident. I think you see something on a screen and your brain builds a whole story out of it. That's not your fault. But it's not real, Eve."

My brain builds a whole story out of it.

He said it so gently that for one full second I almost apologized.

Then he took the phone out of my hand, slid it in his pocket, and picked up his jacket.

"Where are you going? It's nine-thirty."

"Work." He kissed my forehead. "Don't wait up. Put another blanket on the boy."

The door clicked. The elevator hummed down twenty-eight floors. I stood in the middle of that freezing bedroom for a long time, looking at the empty spot on the nightstand where the phone had been, and I couldn't stop shivering, and I couldn't tell anymore which part of me was cold.

I didn't find anything. That's the part nobody tells you about the beginning. You don't find a smoking gun. You find lint.

Over the next week I went through his desk drawer. Tax folders, a stapler, a dead pen. I went through his coat pockets while he showered, and my hands shook like a shoplifter's. In the gray wool one I found a receipt from a place called Anselm on First Avenue. Dinner for two. A hundred and eighty dollars, on a Tuesday. He'd told me he was in Tacoma on that Tuesday.

I put the receipt back exactly where it was. I don't know why. Some animal instinct said: not yet.

One night his phone lit on the counter and a name flashed and was gone before my eyes could grab it. Four letters, maybe five. Started with a J. When I picked the phone up the screen was clean and locked.

And there was the smell. On his collar, twice. Something warm and sweet and expensive that clung to the cotton. I lifted the shirt to my face like a woman losing her mind, and I stood in my own laundry room breathing in another woman, and I told myself it was the office. Somebody's office. A conference room. A hug from a client.

Water rises slowly in a sealed room. You keep telling yourself it's just condensation until it's at your throat.

Diana Chu ordered for both of us at the café on Pine because I hadn't decided anything in weeks. She looked at me over the rim of her cup with those flat, unimpressed eyes she uses on people who lie to her.

"You look like a coat rack, Eve."

"I've been tired."

"You've been tired for three years." She set the cup down. "Try again."

So I told her. The notification. The number. The pass-through. The way he tucked my hair behind my ear.

Diana didn't gasp. She didn't reach for my hand. She just went very still, the way she does before she says something you'll remember for a long time.

"Eve. Do you know what a pass-through account looks like?"

"No."

"Neither does he. He knows what you don't know. That's all a man like Garrett has ever known." She leaned in. "Go to the bank. Not to him. The bank."

"He'll say I'm being paranoid."

"Then let him say it to a printed statement."

I walked out onto Pine with the rain starting again and my thin coat pulled tight. My thumb found my bare ring finger and pressed, the way it does now, the way it's done since I stopped wearing the band.

It wasn't hope, what I felt.

It was just the end of being willing to close my eyes.
