Chapter 1 of After My Husband Disowned Me at the Police Station

Four in the morning at Pike Place, and my hands are already numb. The cold bites through the rubber gloves. It always does. I've been filleting salmon for three hours, and the ice melt runs pink down the stainless steel table into the drain below.

My phone sits propped against a Styrofoam cooler to my left. The screen is cracked across the top corner—been that way for eight months. I can't afford to replace it. Every dollar goes somewhere else. Always has.

The livestream loads in choppy bursts. Seattle's "40 Under 40" entrepreneurial gala. Black ties and champagne. A ballroom I will never stand inside. I wipe my forearm across my face and keep working. The salmon doesn't care about galas.

Then Ezra takes the stage.

My husband. Wearing the custom Brioni suit I paid for with sixteen-hour shifts and a back that hasn't stopped aching in two years. The lights catch his face just right. He looks like someone important. Someone who made it.

He starts his speech. Thanks the investors. Thanks the board. Then he pauses, and his voice goes soft in that way that makes people lean in.

"But I have to thank the woman who inspired everything," he says. "Marigold Ortiz believed in me when no one else did. She's my muse. My believer. This is really her night."

The camera cuts to Marigold in the front row. She's wearing emerald silk. Her hands are perfect. No scars. No calluses. She smiles like she's surprised, but she's not. She knew he was going to say it.

My filleting knife goes still over the salmon.

Ten years. Ten years of waking up before dawn. Ten years of fish blood under my nails and ice water burning my knuckles. Ten years of bailing out his father, funding his startup, keeping the lights on while Ezra built his dream.

He never says my name.

Not once.

Something behind my eyes goes very quiet. Not rage. Not yet. Just a cold, clear silence that feels like the moment before ice cracks.

I finish the salmon. Rinse my hands. Start the next one.

The phone buzzes an hour later. Unknown number. I almost don't answer, but it might be a supplier.

"Is this Haven Harrison?" A man's voice. Clipped. Official.

"Yes."

"This is Officer Brennan with Seattle PD. Your father-in-law, Thomas Harrison, has been detained following an altercation at an underground poker establishment. You're listed as next of kin. We need someone to post bail."

Of course. Of course it's Thomas.

I close my eyes. "How much?"

"Eight hundred."

I have nine hundred in the envelope in my locker. It was supposed to cover this week's supplier payment and the gas bill. Now it's bail money. Again.

"I'll be there in thirty minutes," I say.

I scrub the fish blood from my knuckles in the utility sink. Soap and cold water. My hands are red and raw, the scars across my palms standing out white against the cold-flushed skin. I dry them on my jeans and grab my jacket—the canvas one with the torn pocket and the permanent smell of fish.

The precinct is bright and too warm. Thomas sits in a holding cell, slumped against the cinder block wall. His shirt is half-untucked. He doesn't look at me when I walk in.

Officer Brennan is younger than I expected. He slides the paperwork across the desk. "You're posting bail for Thomas Harrison?"

"Yes." I pull the envelope from my jacket and start counting bills. Eight hundred in fifties and twenties. My hands are steady. I've done this before.

The precinct door opens behind me.

I don't turn. I'm counting.

But I hear her first. Marigold's voice, light and musical. "Oh my God, is this the place? It's so depressing."

Then Ezra. "It's fine. We'll be in and out."

My hands stop counting. Slowly, I turn.

Ezra stands in the doorway in the Brioni suit. Marigold is still in her emerald gala dress, one hand tucked into the crook of his elbow. She sees me and her eyes go wide—not with recognition, but with distaste. I'm still wearing my fish-stained jacket. I smell like the market. I look exactly like what I am.

Ezra's gaze lands on me. Something flickers across his face. Not guilt. Calculation.

Officer Brennan looks between us. "Mr. Harrison, do you know this woman? She's posting bail for your father."

Ezra looks at Marigold. Then he looks at me.

"I don't know this woman," he says clearly. "She's a mentally unstable housekeeper we hired. Definitely not my wife."

Marigold's lips curve into the faintest smile.

Thomas, still in the holding cell, says nothing.

I stand perfectly still. The bail money is in my scarred hand. Eight hundred dollars in cash. The officer is staring at Ezra. Marigold is staring at me.

I look at my husband for a long, silent moment.

Then I step forward.

I drag my right hand—bloodied, fish-scarred, still damp from the market—slowly across his pristine white shirt. Collar to hem. The stain spreads dark and wet across the fabric.

I set the bail money on Officer Brennan's desk.

I turn.

And I walk out of the precinct without a single word.
