Chapter 1 of After My Husband Chose Her Over Me

The elevator climbed forty-two floors in silence. I watched the numbers tick up and felt nothing. Two years ago, this same elevator made my hands shake. Today it was just a box that went up.

The doors opened onto the Hamilton Capital reception floor. Glass. Steel. White orchids in a black vase. The same orchids they always ordered. Someone had been told once that I liked them, back when liking them mattered.

"Ms. Hoffman." The assistant rose. "They're ready for you in the main boardroom."

"Thank you."

I walked the corridor with my deck under my arm. My heels were quiet on the carpet. I pressed my thumb against the inside of my left wrist once, just once, then let it go. A habit. The bracelet wasn't there. The bracelet wasn't anywhere I would ever touch again.

The boardroom door opened, and twelve men in dark suits stood up. Collin was at the head of the table.

Five years of my life stood there in a charcoal Tom Ford, hands flat on the polished wood, looking at me like he was watching a magic trick he hadn't been told the secret to. His hair was shorter. There was a thin line at the corner of his mouth I didn't remember. He was still beautiful in that hard, expensive way. He had always been beautiful. That was never the problem.

"Mr. Hamilton," I said. I gave him the same nod I gave the CFO. "Gentlemen."

The word landed in the middle of the room and sat there.

I saw Collin's jaw move. Just a flicker. He recovered before anyone else noticed.

"Ms. Hoffman. Welcome."

I took the seat at the opposite end of the table. I opened my laptop. I clicked once and the screen behind me lit up with the deck.

"Let's begin."

I talked for forty minutes. Joint-venture structure. Currency hedging in the European rollout. Risk allocation on the Frankfurt acquisition. I kept my voice low and even. I made one dry joke about the German tax authority and the senior partner from Goldman laughed too loud. I smiled at him. I did not smile at Collin.

Collin asked two questions. Both were good ones. I answered them the way I would have answered a stranger at a conference. Crisp. Complete. Done.

When I closed the deck, he was still watching me. I knew that look. I used to live for that look. Now I just gathered my papers.

"Thank you for your time. My team will circulate the revised term sheet by Friday."

I was out the door before anyone stood.

He caught up to me at the elevator bank. Of course he did.

"Hope."

I pressed the down button. "Mr. Hamilton."

"That's how we're doing this."

"That's how it is." I checked my watch. "I have a four o'clock at Park Avenue."

He stepped a little closer. Not enough for anyone watching to notice. Enough for me to smell the cologne. Same one. Of course it was the same one.

"You look well," he said.

"Thank you."

"London suited you."

"It did."

He waited. I had used to fill his silences. I had used to rush in and smooth them over and make him comfortable. I stood there and watched the floor numbers light up above the elevator.

"Hope." His voice dropped. "Look at me."

I looked at him. I made my face the face I used in client meetings when someone said something I had no opinion about.

"Was there something else, Mr. Hamilton?"

A muscle jumped under his eye. He adjusted his left cufflink. I almost laughed. I remembered that tell. Five years of remembering.

"No," he said. "Nothing else."

The elevator opened. I stepped in. I did not look back. The doors closed on his reflection, and I watched myself in the polished metal, and I was breathing perfectly evenly, and that was the thing that surprised me most.

***

I heard later, from a friend of a friend who worked on his floor, that he sat in his office until nearly midnight. That he opened the top drawer of his desk and took out a small platinum bracelet with three sapphires set in a row. That he turned it over and over in his hands and said nothing to anyone, and that when his assistant offered to bring him dinner he waved her away without lifting his eyes.

He was telling himself a story. I knew the story because I had been married to the man who wrote it. The story said: she is hurt, and she is hiding it, and she is waiting for me to do the right thing so she can come back. The story said: nothing has ever truly left me.

The story was wrong. But Collin had never been good at stories he wasn't the hero of.

***

My phone buzzed in the car. London number. I answered without looking.

"How did it go?" Finley's voice, low and steady, three thousand miles away.

I leaned my head against the cool window. Manhattan slid past in long blurs of gold.

"Like I thought."

"And you?"

I smiled. He always asked the second question. Never the first one without the second one right behind it.

"I'm fine," I said. And then, because it was him, "I'm tired. But I'm fine."

"Eat something," he said. "And don't argue with me about it."

"I wasn't going to."

"Yes, you were."

I laughed. Just a little. The driver glanced at me in the mirror, surprised. I hadn't laughed in a car in this city in a long, long time.
