Chapter 1 of After My Husband Called His Mistress His Real Star

The studio parking lot smelled like hot asphalt and ambition. I sat in my car for a moment longer than necessary, fingers resting on the steering wheel, breathing in the manufactured cool of the air conditioning before stepping out into the Los Angeles heat.

I'd dressed carefully that morning. A silk blouse the color of champagne. Tailored trousers that fit like a promise. Hair pulled back in a way that said composed, not trying too hard. The gold bracelet on my left wrist caught the sunlight as I locked the car—the same bracelet I'd bought with my first real paycheck, back when my name on a call sheet meant something I'd earned, not something people whispered about in past tense.

The studio entrance swallowed me into fluorescent brightness and recycled air. A production assistant with a clipboard glanced up, did a double-take, then looked away too quickly. Her mouth twitched. Another PA near the craft services table elbowed his colleague, and they both went silent as I passed.

I kept walking. Chin level. Shoulders back. The way I'd learned to move through rooms full of people who were always, always watching.

Backstage was a warren of temporary walls and taped cables. A makeup artist intercepted me near the green room, her smile bright and empty. "Oh good, you're here! Let's get you camera-ready."

She sat me down under lights that made everything too sharp. I watched in the mirror as she worked—foundation two shades too dark, blush applied with a heavy hand that aged me five years, lip color that drained the warmth from my face. Subtle enough to look accidental. Deliberate enough that I knew it wasn't.

"Actually," I said quietly, "could we go a bit lighter on the—"

"Trust me, honey." Her smile never wavered. "I've been doing this for fifteen years. The cameras wash you out."

I waited until she turned away to grab a brush, then corrected the worst of it myself with a tissue and the compact from my purse. In the mirror, a crew member caught my eye and smirked before looking away.

The whisper came from somewhere behind me. Just loud enough.

"She actually showed up. Bold for someone whose career is on life support."

Laughter, quickly muffled. I touched the bracelet on my wrist once, a habit I'd never broken, and stood. The makeup artist had already moved on to someone more important.

I found a corner near the stage entrance and checked my phone. A text from Rome: Running late. You'll be great. The words sat on the screen like something translated badly from another language.

The door burst open with the kind of energy that demanded attention. Destiny Hicks swept in on a cloud of expensive perfume and Rome's arm, her laugh pitched to carry. She wore white—of course she wore white—a dress that clung and flared in all the places magazine covers loved. Her hand rested on Rome's chest with the casual ownership of someone who'd already won.

Rome looked good. He always looked good. Hair styled with the kind of carelessness that took effort. Shirt open at the collar just enough. He scanned the room with the ease of a man walking into a space he owned, his gaze sliding past me for a fraction of a second before Destiny tugged his attention back to her.

She saw me, though. I watched recognition flicker across her face, followed by something that looked almost like joy.

"Meadow!" She detached from Rome and glided toward me, coffee cup in hand. "I didn't know you'd be here today. Rome didn't mention—"

The coffee hit my blouse in a hot, spreading wave. I gasped—couldn't help it—the heat soaking through silk to skin.

"Oh my God." Destiny's hand flew to her mouth, her eyes wide with theatrical horror. "I didn't even see you there. You just sort of blend in now, don't you?"

Every head in the vicinity turned. A camera operator coughed into his fist. Someone near the craft table made a sound that might have been a laugh, quickly swallowed.

I stood very still, coffee dripping onto the concrete floor, the warmth spreading across my ribs. My hand found the bracelet. Pressed against the metal until I felt the edge of it bite into my palm.

"Rome." I looked past Destiny to my husband. "Could you—"

"Babe, it was an accident." Rome's voice carried the patient tone of someone explaining something obvious to someone slow. "Destiny said she's sorry. Don't make it a thing."

He wrapped an arm around Destiny's shoulders, pulling her close. She leaned into him, her expression settling into something that looked like concern but tasted like victory.

"Actually," Rome said, his tone shifting into something brisk and businesslike, "good that you're both here. Meadow, we need you to sign off on a quick scheduling adjustment before we start taping." He produced a slim document from his jacket pocket, slid it across the nearest table. "Just a formality. Locks in your availability for the next few shoots."

I stared at the paper. The coffee was cooling against my skin, sticky and uncomfortable. Around us, the crew had gone back to their work with the studied indifference of people who'd seen exactly what they'd expected to see.

"I should read—"

"It's the same terms as your original contract." Rome's smile was warm, easy, the same smile that had once made me feel like the only person in the room. "Just with the updated schedule we discussed. Remember?"

I didn't remember discussing it. But my hands were shaking slightly—from the coffee, from the eyes on me, from the weight of standing in this room where I'd once belonged and now felt like an intruder in my own life. I picked up the pen someone had left on the table.

The signature felt like muscle memory. I'd signed my name so many times—contracts, autographs, the marriage license that had promised forever.

Rome took the document back, folded it once, slipped it into his jacket. "Perfect. Go get cleaned up. We start in twenty."

Destiny's hand was already back on his chest. Neither of them watched me leave.

I found the bathroom, locked myself in a stall, and pressed my forehead against the cool metal door. The coffee had left a stain across the silk that wouldn't come out. I could hear voices outside, muffled and indistinct.

The bracelet caught the fluorescent light as I straightened, pulled myself together, smoothed down my ruined blouse. I looked at my reflection in the scratched mirror over the sink—makeup slightly smudged, coffee stain spreading like a wound, eyes that still looked like mine but felt like they belonged to someone I used to know.

Twenty minutes until taping. I touched the bracelet once more and walked back out into the lights.

Callen Miller was waiting near the stage entrance, his smile too wide, his energy too bright. "Meadow! There she is!" He clasped my hands in both of his, warm and slightly damp. "I have to tell you, having you on this show—it's a real treat for the audience. Your resilience, you know? Coming back after... well. After everything."

His hand found the small of my back, guiding me toward the stage with a pressure that felt friendly and inescapable at once. "We've got a great lineup today. Really great. You're going to love it."

Something in his voice made the hair on my arms stand up. A brightness that didn't reach his eyes. A warmth that felt rehearsed.

But the stage lights were already coming up, and the audience was filing in, and somewhere behind me Rome was watching, and I had signed my name on a piece of paper I hadn't read.

I stepped onto the stage and smiled for the cameras like I'd been trained to do since I was twenty-two years old.

The trap was already closing. I just didn't know it yet.
