Chapter 1

"Eight weeks pregnant, Mrs. Miller," the doctor had said just twenty minutes ago.

I clutched the lab report in my hand, practically floating down the hospital corridor. My husband, Ethan, had wanted a child for three years. Today was the day I finally gave him the good news.

I turned the corner toward the pharmacy to pick up my prenatal vitamins.

A familiar laugh cut through the clinical hum of the hallway.

I stopped walking.

"Careful, babe. The doctor said no sudden movements."

That voice. Ethan.

I stepped out from behind a row of vending machines.

Ethan stood ten feet away. His arm was wrapped protectively around a woman's waist.

Not just any woman.

Chloe. My best friend since college.

She wore a tight floral maternity dress, her hand resting over a very obvious, rounded belly.

"I'm fine, Ethan," Chloe giggled, leaning into his chest. "Our little guy is just kicking."

Our little guy.

The paper in my hand crumpled.

"Ethan?" My voice cracked, barely a whisper, but it sliced through the space between us.

His head snapped up. The color drained from his face.

"Sophia." He dropped his hand from Chloe’s waist, taking a half-step back.

Chloe spun around. She didn't look pale. She looked annoyed.

"What are you doing here?" Ethan demanded, his tone defensive instead of apologetic.

"What am I doing here?" I marched toward them, my vision narrowing to the space between my husband and my best friend. "I'm at a hospital, Ethan. Why is your hand on her stomach?"

Chloe smirked, patting her bump. "Five months, Soph. We were going to tell you."

"Tell me what?" My chest tightened. I looked at Ethan. "Tell me what, Ethan?!"

"Keep your voice down," he hissed, glancing at the passing nurses. "People are staring."

"Let them stare!" I shoved his shoulder. "Is that your child?"

Ethan squared his jaw. "Yes."

The single word hit me like a physical blow.

"How long?" I asked.

Chloe stepped forward, linking her arm back through his. "Two years. We tried to stop, but we just love each other too much."

"Two years?" I stared at the woman I had called my sister. "You were my maid of honor, Chloe. You spent Thanksgiving at our house."

"And Ethan spent the nights you were in Chicago in my bed," she replied, not a shred of remorse in her tone.

"Shut up, Chloe," Ethan muttered, though he pulled her closer.

"Why should I?" Chloe challenged. "She needs to know. I'm tired of hiding, Ethan. I'm tired of pretending I don't love you."

"You're sick," I whispered, my stomach churning. I looked at Ethan. "And you. You let me plan a nursery. You let me pick out names last month!"

"That was before I knew Chloe was pregnant!" Ethan fired back. "Things changed, Sophia. I was going to file for divorce after the holidays."

"The holidays?" I laughed, a bitter, hollow sound. "How generous of you."

My fingers trembled as I raised the crumpled hospital report.

"You wanted a family," I choked out, the tears finally spilling over. "You begged me to do the IVF treatments."

"I wanted a family with someone who actually had time for me," Ethan shot back. His eyes were cold, devoid of the man I married.

I shoved the paper against his chest. "Read it."

He didn't move.

"Read it!" I screamed.

Ethan snatched the paper, his eyes scanning the bold black text. His jaw flexed.

"Eight weeks," I whispered, my voice breaking. "I came here to surprise you. To tell you we were finally having a baby."

For a split second, a flash of guilt crossed his face. He stared at the paper, his mouth opening slightly.

"Ethan?" Chloe asked, her voice sharp.

She snatched the paper from his grip. She glanced at the sonogram picture and scoffed.

"How convenient," she sneered, tearing the paper in half and dropping it on the linoleum floor. "You find out Ethan is leaving you, so you suddenly fake a pregnancy?"

"He didn't even know, you bitch!" I lunged forward, raising my hand.

Ethan caught my wrist mid-air. His grip was a vice.

"Don't you dare touch her," he growled.

"She tore up my ultrasound!" I yanked my arm back, but he held tight.

"It's just a clump of cells, Sophia," Ethan said flatly. "Chloe is carrying my son. He's halfway here. My priority is them."

The cruelty in his words paralyzed me.

"A clump of cells?" I repeated, my voice dropping to a deadened whisper. "This is your child."

"My child is right here," he said, placing a hand on Chloe's belly.

Chloe watched my devastation with a triumphant gleam in her eyes. But as a pair of doctors walked out of the nearby elevator, her expression shifted.

Her face twisted in sudden panic.

"Sophia, please!" Chloe cried out, her voice echoing down the hall. "I'm sorry we fell in love! Please don't hurt my baby!"

Before I could even process her words, Chloe threw herself backward. She landed on the floor with a loud thud, clutching her stomach.

"Ah! Ethan, it hurts!" she wailed, tears streaming down her face.

"Chloe!" Ethan dropped my wrist and dropped to his knees beside her.

"I didn't even touch her!" I yelled, staring at the spectacle.

Ethan glared up at me, his eyes burning with pure hatred.

"You're out of your mind," he spat.

He stood up, his towering frame casting a shadow over me.

"Ethan, I swear to God, she threw herself down—"

"Shut up!"

He shoved me. Hard.

His hands slammed into my shoulders with enough force to lift me off my feet.

I flew backward.

My lower back crashed into the sharp edge of the metal handrail lining the corridor. A sickening crunch echoed in my ears.

A blinding, white-hot agony tore through my abdomen.

I crumpled to the floor, gasping for air. The pain was unlike anything I had ever felt. It felt like my insides were being ripped apart.

"Ethan," I whimpered, curling into a ball.

He didn't look at me. He was busy lifting Chloe into his arms.

"Someone get a doctor!" Ethan yelled. "My girlfriend is hurt!"

I reached out a trembling hand toward his retreating back. "Ethan... please. The baby."

A warm, wet sensation spread between my thighs.

I looked down.

Dark red blood soaked through my light-colored jeans, pooling on the pristine white tiles.

My baby. My eight-week-old baby.

"Help," I rasped, but my voice was too weak.

The corridor spun. Faces blurred together. People were shouting, running, but the sounds were muffled, like I was underwater.

My eyelids grew incredibly heavy. The pain in my stomach radiated outward, numbing my limbs.

Through the chaotic swarm of nurses and bystanders, the crowd suddenly parted.

A man sprinted toward me.

Tall. Broad shoulders. A sharp jawline tight with panic.

Damien.

My boss. The cold, untouchable CEO of Reed Enterprises. What was he doing here?

He slid to his knees beside me, his expensive suit soaking up my blood.

"Sophia!" His voice was raw, frantic. He grabbed my shoulders, his dark eyes wide with terror. "Stay with me. Do you hear me? Stay awake!"

I tried to speak, but only a choked sob escaped my lips.

Damien scooped me into his arms, holding me tightly against his chest.

"I've got you," he swore, his voice trembling. "I've got you."

The world went pitch black.

Chapter 2

"Sophia. Open your eyes."

The voice was deep, rough with fatigue.

I blinked against the harsh fluorescent lights. White ceiling. The sharp smell of antiseptic stung my nose. The memories crashed into me—Ethan’s hands shoving me, the sharp metal rail, the blood pooling on the tiles.

My hands flew to my stomach.

"The baby?" I croaked.

A doctor in blue scrubs stepped into my line of sight. "You suffered a severe placental abruption, Mrs. Miller. But we managed to stop the bleeding."

Tears blurred my vision. "My baby is alive?"

"Barely," the doctor warned, his expression grave. "Your condition is extremely unstable. One more shock, one more spike in your blood pressure, and you will lose this child. You require absolute bed rest."

I nodded frantically.

"I'll handle the arrangements," a commanding voice said.

I turned my head. Damien sat in a chair by the window. My boss, the flawless CEO of Reed Enterprises, looked wrecked. His tie was gone. His expensive white shirt bore a massive, dried rust-colored stain.

My blood.

"Mr. Reed," I whispered. "You stayed."

"Someone had to," he replied, standing up. "I've already authorized a transfer to the VIP maternity ward. Dr. Evans here is the top specialist in the state. She’ll oversee your care."

"Thank you," I choked out.

I scanned the empty corners of the room. The door remained shut.

"Is he outside?" I asked.

Damien’s jaw tightened. "No."

"Ethan didn't come?"

"I had the hospital staff call him three times," Damien said, his tone icy. "He sent them straight to voicemail."

I needed to hear it from him. He pushed me. He almost killed his own child.

"My phone," I said, pointing to the plastic belongings bag on the tray table.

Damien frowned. "The doctor said no stress."

"Please, Damien. I need to know."

He grabbed the device and handed it to me.

I dialed Ethan’s number. It rang four times.

"Hello?"

A woman’s voice. Light, airy, triumphant.

My grip on the phone tightened. "Chloe. Put Ethan on."

"Sophia! You're awake," Chloe chirped. "I'd hand the phone over, but Ethan is a little busy right now."

"Busy doing what?" I demanded.

"Holding my hand," she said. "We're in the exam room. The doctor is pointing out our son's little toes on the monitor. Ethan is practically in tears."

A sharp pain sliced through my chest.

"He pushed me," I said, my voice trembling. "I was bleeding on the floor, and he left me."

"You tripped, Soph," Chloe corrected, her tone turning cold. "Stop being so dramatic. Ethan was worried sick about me. You know how high-risk my pregnancy is."

"I'm in the hospital, Chloe. I almost lost my baby."

She laughed softly. "Well, maybe you should focus on your little clump of cells and leave my family alone. Ethan is done with you."

The line went dead.

I stared at the black screen. My husband. My best friend. They were laughing at an ultrasound while I lay in a bed soaked in my own blood.

Damien took the phone from my shaking hands.

"He's with her," I whispered, staring blankly at the wall. "He didn't even ask if I was alive."

Damien’s eyes darkened. "He isn't worth your tears, Sophia. Focus on surviving."

A nurse bustled in, pushing a wheelchair. "Time to move you to the VIP suite, Mrs. Miller."

Damien walked beside me the entire way. The new room looked like a luxury hotel. Soft lighting, plush furniture, a massive flat-screen TV mounted on the wall.

The nurse helped me into the bed and handed me the remote. "Watch some television. Try to relax."

She left the room. Damien stood at the foot of my bed.

"You should go home, Mr. Reed," I said. "You've done enough. I don't know how to repay you."

"You don't owe me anything," he said abruptly. "And call me Damien."

I pressed the power button on the remote. The morning entertainment news flashed onto the screen.

"Last night’s Crystal Charity Gala was full of surprises!" the bubbly anchor announced.

The camera panned across a red carpet.

My heart stopped.

There was Ethan. He wore his tailored black tuxedo—the one I bought him for our anniversary.

He wasn't alone.

Chloe clung to his arm, wearing a stunning silver gown that hugged her five-month baby bump. She smiled brightly for the flashing cameras.

"Real estate mogul Ethan Miller made quite the statement last night," the anchor continued. "Stepping out publicly with his pregnant new partner, Chloe Davis. Sources say Miller plans to finalize his divorce soon to welcome his new heir!"

On the screen, a reporter shoved a microphone toward Ethan.

"Mr. Miller! Are you excited about the baby?"

Ethan grinned, pulling Chloe closer. "I've never been happier. This woman and this child are my entire world."

I muted the TV. The silence in the hospital room was deafening.

He didn't just abandon me. He paraded her around the city while I was bleeding out. He used a major business event to legitimize his affair, knowing the media would eat it up.

My nails dug into my palms. The sadness evaporated, replaced by a burning, furious heat in my veins.

Damien stepped between me and the television, blocking the screen.

"Turn it off, Sophia," he ordered.

"No," I said, my voice steady for the first time since yesterday. "Leave it."

Damien studied my face. The panic from yesterday was gone from his features, replaced by a calculating sharpness.

"You're not crying," he noted.

"I'm done crying." I met his gaze. "He wants to destroy me. He wants to replace me and pretend I never existed."

"He made a public spectacle to force your hand," Damien said, crossing his arms. "If you fight the divorce now, the media will paint you as the bitter, barren wife standing in the way of true love."

"I'm not barren," I fired back, resting a protective hand over my stomach. "And I won't let them win."

Damien leaned over the bed, resting his hands on the mattress. "What do you want to do about it?"

"I want to ruin him," I said.

A slow, dangerous smile spread across Damien's face.

"Good," he murmured. "Because I already drafted the press release."

I blinked, caught off guard. "What press release?"

Damien pulled a folded piece of paper from his suit pocket and dropped it on my lap.

"Read it."

I unfolded the crisp white page. The bold black letters at the top made my stomach drop.

Chapter 3

"More pillows, Maria. My back is killing me."

Chloe's voice echoed from the living room the second I unlocked the front door.

I pushed the heavy oak panel open and stepped into the foyer.

My mother-in-law, Beatrice, sat on the velvet sofa. She held a porcelain bowl, carefully spoon-feeding chicken broth to the woman who had destroyed my marriage.

"Drink up, darling," Beatrice cooed, wiping Chloe’s chin with a napkin. "My grandson needs his nourishment."

"What is going on here?" I asked.

Beatrice didn't even flinch. She kept her eyes on the bowl.

Chloe smiled, leaning back against the cushions. "Sophia. You're out early. Ethan said you needed a few more days of bed rest."

"This is my house," I said, dropping my keys onto the console table.

"Actually, it's Ethan's house," Beatrice corrected. She finally looked at me, her expression sour. "And Chloe is carrying the Miller heir. She needs a stress-free environment."

"I'm his wife. I'm pregnant too."

Beatrice scoffed. "A clump of cells, Ethan told me. And who knows if it's even his?"

My hands balled into fists. "Excuse me?"

"You heard her," Chloe chimed in, resting a protective hand over her swollen belly. "Ethan told us how you suddenly produced a lab report right after he asked for a divorce. It’s pathetic, Soph."

"I didn't fake anything," I shot back. "And you are leaving. Now."

"She stays," a deep voice interrupted.

I spun around. Ethan stood in the doorway of his home office, a file folder in his hand. He didn't look guilty. He looked entirely inconvenienced.

"Ethan, tell her to pack her bags," I demanded.

"No." He walked over to the sofa and kissed the top of Chloe’s head. "Chloe stays. Her apartment has black mold, and she’s halfway through a high-risk pregnancy. She needs proper care."

"She needs to get out of my home!"

"Keep your voice down," Ethan snapped. "My mother is right. This house is in my name. If you can't handle Chloe being here, you know where the door is."

The sheer audacity paralyzed me.

"Dinner is served," Maria called out from the dining room, keeping her head bowed. The maid refused to meet my gaze.

Ethan offered Chloe his hand, helping her up from the sofa. "Come on, babe. You need to eat."

They walked past me, leaving me standing alone in the foyer.

I followed them into the dining room. I refused to be chased out of my own life.

We sat at the mahogany table. Maria served roasted lamb and vegetables. The clinking of silverware filled the tense silence.

"The nursery needs to be repainted," Chloe announced, cutting into her meat. "That pastel yellow is awful. I want a rich navy blue. For our boy."

"Whatever you want," Ethan said, pouring her a glass of sparkling water.

"Our boy," Chloe repeated, staring directly at me. "The future CEO. It's so important for a son to inherit the legacy. Don't you agree, Sophia?"

I ignored her, staring at my plate.

Chloe didn't stop. "A little girl, or a... complication... wouldn't get a dime. Only the true heir matters."

I slammed my fork down. The silver clattered violently against the china.

"Shut your mouth, Chloe."

"Sophia, stop it," Ethan warned.

"She is sitting at my table, eating from my plates, and threatening my child!" I yelled.

"She's stating facts," Ethan fired back. "My son gets the company. That was always the deal with my father. You're being completely unreasonable."

"Unreasonable? I almost lost my baby yesterday because you shoved me into a metal rail!"

"You tripped," he said coldly. "And if you can't behave, you can eat in the guest bedroom."

"Guest bedroom?" I laughed, a bitter, hollow sound. "You're moving me out of the master suite?"

"Chloe needs the space," Beatrice interjected, sipping her wine. "Her back hurts."

I pushed my chair back and stood up. "You are all sick. Every single one of you."

I turned and walked out of the dining room.

Thunder rattled the windows at midnight. I couldn't sleep. The guest bed felt like a slab of concrete. The air in the house was suffocating, thick with the scent of Chloe’s sickeningly sweet perfume.

I walked downstairs to the kitchen to get a glass of water.

The sliding glass door leading to the back patio stood slightly ajar. A cool breeze drifted in, smelling of impending rain.

I stepped outside onto the concrete to catch a breath of fresh air.

*Click.*

I spun around. The heavy glass door was shut.

Chloe stood on the other side, her hand resting on the lock. She wore my silk robe.

"Chloe, open the door," I demanded, my voice muffled by the thick glass.

She smiled, a wicked, triumphant grin. She raised a glass of warm milk to her lips, took a sip, and mouthed the words: *Goodbye, Sophia.*

She turned off the patio lights and walked away.

A drop of water hit my cheek. Then another.

Within seconds, the sky ripped open. Freezing rain pounded against my thin pajamas.

I banged my fists against the glass. "Ethan! Maria! Help!"

The wind howled, drowning out my screams. The temperature plummeted instantly.

I ran to the side gate, but a heavy padlock secured the iron bars. Ethan had locked it yesterday.

"Help!" I screamed again, pounding on the living room windows.

The house remained completely dark. No one came.

My teeth chattered. My head spun. The doctor's warning echoed in my ears. *One more shock... you will lose this child.*

A sharp cramp seized my lower abdomen.

I hugged my stomach, sinking to the wet, freezing concrete. The rain lashed against my back.

"Please," I whimpered into the storm. "Not my baby."

The world tilted. The cold seeped into my bones, dragging me down into total darkness.

"Sophia."

A warm hand pressed against my cheek.

I opened my eyes. The sterile white ceiling of the hospital greeted me again. The steady beep of a heart monitor filled the quiet room.

Damien leaned over the bed.

His dark hair was completely soaked, plastered to his forehead. Water dripped from his black trench coat onto the linoleum floor.

"Damien?" My throat burned.

"You're safe," he said, his voice tight. "Your fever broke an hour ago."

I panicked, grabbing my stomach. "My baby?"

"Holding on," he promised, his jaw clenching. "Barely."

"How did you find me?"

"I drove to the villa to drop off the legal files. I found you passed out in the mud by the patio." A muscle ticked in his cheek. "Ethan didn't even know you were outside."

"She locked me out," I whispered. "Chloe."

Damien pulled a chair close to the bed and sat. He didn't break eye contact.

"I stayed all night," he said. "I watched your fever spike. I watched the doctors fight for three hours to keep your child alive."

"Thank you."

"I don't want your thanks, Sophia." He leaned forward, his dark eyes locking onto mine. "I want your permission."

"Permission for what?"

He reached into his wet coat pocket and pulled out his phone.

"To ruin them. Right now."

He tapped the screen and turned it toward me.

"Give me the word," Damien murmured, "and Ethan loses everything by morning."
