Chapter 1 of After My Groom Left Our Reception With His Mistress

The ballroom smelled like champagne and white roses.

Five hundred guests. Crystal chandeliers. A four-piece string quartet playing something soft and expensive. My dress had a ten-foot train. I had spent four months choosing the fabric.

I was standing alone next to the sweetheart table when Everest crossed the room toward Emely.

He leaned down and said something in her ear. She laughed — that light, breathy laugh she had perfected over years of practice. Then he took her hand.

Not her elbow. Her hand. Fingers laced through fingers, the way you hold someone when you want everyone to see.

'I owe her,' he said, loud enough for the nearest tables to hear. 'Old debt. Won't be long.'

He didn't look at me.

They walked toward the elevator together. The doors closed. And Everest Brooks, my husband of six hours, was gone.

I stood there with a glass of champagne I hadn't touched. Around me, five hundred people found somewhere else to look.

I reached up and touched the bracelet on my wrist. My grandmother's. A thin gold chain with a single charm — a small compass rose. She had worn it every day of her life. When she died, it was the only thing I asked for.

The metal was warm from my skin.

I felt something go very quiet inside me. Not numb. Quieter than numb. Like the moment after a sound so loud it takes the hearing with it.

Braelyn appeared at my elbow. She's six feet tall in heels and she doesn't whisper.

'Where the hell did he go?' Her palm hit the table hard enough to rattle the centerpiece. Two guests flinched.

I looked at her. 'Don't.'

'Selene —'

'Not here.' I handed her my champagne glass. 'Smile.'

On my other side, quieter, Hanna was already watching me. She had her phone out. I didn't ask what she was recording. With Hanna, you never had to ask.

I smoothed the front of my dress. I said goodnight to the guests closest to me. I thanked the wedding coordinator. I walked out of the ballroom with my spine straight and my expression pleasant, and I did not look back at the elevator doors.

He came back to the suite at 1 a.m.

I was sitting in the chair by the window, still in my dress, the lights of Manhattan spread out below me like something that belonged to someone else. He smelled like Emely's perfume — that specific gardenia-and-amber scent she wore like a flag.

He didn't apologize. He poured himself a drink.

'I want a divorce,' I said.

He laughed. It was a short, dismissive sound.

'You have nothing without me, Selene.' He set down the glass and looked at me like I was a problem he was bored by. 'No career. No independent income. No identity that isn't Mrs. Brooks.' He tilted his head. 'What exactly do you think you're going to do?'

I didn't answer.

His voice dropped. The laugh was gone.

'Your grandfather is on life support,' he said. 'One call. That's all it takes. Unless you walk back downstairs right now, find Emely, and apologize. On your knees. For making her feel unwelcome at our wedding.'

I looked at him for a long moment.

Twelve years. I had loved this man for twelve years. I had built things and buried them and stood behind him and believed — genuinely believed — that what we had was real.

I blinked. Once. Slowly.

Then I picked up my phone.

I made a single call. Thirty seconds. I didn't raise my voice. When I hung up, I set the phone down on the table between us and waited.

His phone buzzed four minutes later. Then again. Then a call he answered with, 'What do you mean it fell through —'

I watched his face. I watched the color leave it.

I said nothing. I walked to the window and looked out at the city and touched my grandmother's bracelet and thought: so that's what the bottom feels like.

Now I know.

In the morning, I moved my things to the guest suite. I called Braelyn at seven. I called Hanna at seven-fifteen.

We met at a café in the West Village at nine. No reservations. Cash. A corner table where no one could sit behind us.

Braelyn had a legal pad. Hanna had a recorder she set on the table without asking, because Hanna never enters a room without documentation.

I ordered black coffee. I stood at the window for a moment before I sat down — an old habit, one I couldn't quite explain.

Then I told them everything.

I spoke for forty minutes. My voice didn't shake. When I finished, the café was louder with the morning rush, and Braelyn was already writing, her pen moving fast and hard across the page.

Hanna looked at me with that quiet journalist's focus. 'How long have you been planning this?'

I wrapped both hands around my cup.

'Since last night,' I said. 'But I've been ready for longer than that.'

Braelyn didn't look up. 'Good,' she said. 'Because we're going to make it permanent.'
