After My Groom Left Me at Our Engagement Party Summary

On a glittering Manhattan rooftop, surrounded by two hundred guests and champagne, she stood in her ivory Vera Wang gown, ready to claim the future she'd waited three years for. Vincent's hand was in hers, his thumb tracing that familiar, comforting circle. Then, in the third row, Mara's grin froze—and the night she'd built her life around collapsed. What did Mara mouth? What made her groom walk away? A modern romance novel about shattered promises, hidden truths, and the aftermath of a public betrayal that leaves her world—and her heart—in ruins.

Chapter 1 of After My Groom Left Me at Our Engagement Party

The string lights turned everything gold.

Two hundred people, champagne flutes catching the light, the Manhattan skyline spread out behind us like something out of a dream. I stood on that rooftop stage in my Vera Wang gown — the one I'd spent four months choosing, ivory silk with a structured bodice and a skirt that moved when I walked — and I thought: this is it. This is what three years of being patient looks like.

Vincent's fingers were laced through mine. His thumb traced a slow circle on my knuckle, the way it always did when he was happy. I leaned into him slightly and smiled at the crowd.

Mara was in the third row, grinning so wide it looked like it hurt. She caught my eye and mouthed something. I couldn't read it. I turned back to the microphone.

Then the waiter appeared.

He was young, maybe twenty-two, and he had the face of someone delivering news he desperately didn't want to deliver. He bent toward Vincent and whispered. I watched Vincent's expression shift — something draining out of it, something else rushing in.

"What?" Vincent said. Out loud. Into the silence.

The waiter whispered again.

Vincent's hand went slack in mine.

I felt it before I understood it — the loosening of his grip, the way his attention simply left the room, left the stage, left me. He turned. He pushed through the crowd without a word, without a backward glance, without a single syllable of explanation.

I stood there holding the microphone.

Two hundred people watched him go.

Then the doors burst open at the far end of the rooftop, and Vincent came back through them carrying Arlette Hayes in his arms. Her wrists were wrapped in what used to be a white tablecloth. It wasn't white anymore. Her head was tipped against his chest, her dark hair falling loose, and Vincent was moving fast — past the catering tables, past the string lights, past the stage where I was standing in my wedding veil — and he didn't look at me once.

Not once.

The room went quiet the way rooms do when something has happened that no one has words for yet. Then the whispers started. I could feel them like something physical, moving across my skin.

I stood there and I held the microphone and I did not move.

---

I don't remember deciding to follow him to the hospital. I just found myself in a cab, still in the gown, the veil bobby-pinned to my hair, watching the city slide past the window. Mount Sinai. Thirty minutes in traffic. I kept my hands flat on my thighs and breathed.

The ER corridor smelled like antiseptic and recycled air. I spotted Mr. and Mrs. Hayes near the nurses' station before they spotted me — her in a floor-length black dress, him with his jaw set, both of them radiating the particular energy of people managing a situation rather than experiencing one.

Mrs. Hayes reached me first.

She took both my hands in hers. Her grip was warm and firm and entirely performative.

"Grace." Her voice was soft. Aggrieved. The voice of a woman who had been terribly, quietly wronged. "We had hoped for more compassion from someone who claims to love our daughter's dearest friend."

I looked at her. I didn't say anything.

"She's been struggling," Mr. Hayes added, from just behind his wife's shoulder. "This has been building for months. We hoped the people closest to Vincent would understand that."

I was still looking at Mrs. Hayes's hands wrapped around mine. Her nails were perfect. Pale pink. Not a single chip.

The door to one of the rooms opened and Vincent came out.

He looked exhausted in the way people look when they've been frightened and the adrenaline is starting to ebb. His shirt was untucked. There was a rust-colored smear on his left cuff. He saw me and something moved across his face — relief, maybe, or the expectation of it.

"Grace." He crossed toward me. "She's stable. They're saying she's going to be okay."

I waited.

"I know tonight was—" He exhaled. Pushed a hand through his hair. "She almost died, Grace. Can you just not make this about you for once?"

The corridor was very bright. Fluorescent. The kind of light that makes everyone look slightly wrong.

I heard what he said. I turned it over once. I looked at his face — the exhaustion, the expectation, the complete and total absence of any awareness of what he had just said to me — and something in my chest went very quiet.

Not broken. Not angry. Just done.

I reached up. I found the first bobby pin, then the second. The veil came loose in my hands — twenty inches of ivory tulle, cathedral-length, the one I'd cried over in the shop because it was so exactly right.

I set it down on the corridor floor.

Then I turned and walked out of Mount Sinai.

Vincent called my name once. The automatic doors closed behind me, and I didn't look back.
