Chapter 1 of After My Fiancé Sabotaged My Brakes, I Disappeared

I arrived at the Hayes estate forty minutes before the engagement dinner was supposed to start. The gates recognized my car. They always did. Five years of coming and going, and the security system knew me better than Cillian's mother ever would.

I parked in the curved driveway and sat there for a moment. The November cold made the leather seats stiff. I checked my makeup in the mirror. Foundation smooth. Lipstick perfect. I looked like a woman who was about to celebrate her engagement. I looked like I believed it.

The front door was unlocked. I let myself in. The foyer smelled like the white lilies Mrs. Hayes ordered every Monday. My heels clicked on the marble. The house was quiet. Too early for the staff to start setting up.

I was walking toward the powder room when I heard Cillian's voice.

His study door was half-open. A slice of warm light fell across the hallway floor. I stopped.

"She's been useful," he said. His tone was casual. Easy. The way he sounded when he talked about quarterly reports. "Adalynn plays the part well. No one's asking questions anymore."

I stood very still.

A tinny voice came through the speaker. Rhett. His assistant. I couldn't make out the words, but I knew that clipped, efficient cadence.

Cillian laughed. It was a short sound. Dismissive. "Rhett, she thinks I'm her cure. That's the most useful thing about her. The phobia, the gratitude—it keeps her exactly where I need her."

My hand was on the doorframe. I didn't remember reaching for it.

"Once Peyton's position is secured," Cillian continued, "we'll phase Adalynn out cleanly. She won't make a scene. She never does."

The marble floor was polished enough to reflect. I saw myself in it. A woman in a navy dress. Hair pinned. Frozen.

I looked at that reflection for a long time. Maybe a minute. Maybe less. Long enough for the conversation inside to move on to something else. Long enough for my heartbeat to slow down into something that felt like silence.

I turned and walked away. My heels didn't make a sound.

---

Dinner started at seven. I was already seated when Cillian walked into the dining room. He smiled at me. The same smile he'd worn a thousand times. I smiled back.

"You look beautiful," he said, leaning down to kiss my temple.

I let him.

Mrs. Hayes sat at the head of the table in a gray silk gown that probably cost more than my first car. She looked me over the way she always did. Searching for a flaw. A thread out of place. Proof I didn't belong.

"Adalynn," she said. Her voice was cool. Controlled. "I trust you've finalized the seating chart for the ceremony."

"Yes," I said. "I sent it to your secretary this morning."

She nodded. Barely.

The first course arrived. Butternut squash soup. I picked up my spoon. I ate without tasting. I answered questions I didn't hear. Mrs. Hayes asked about the flowers. I said something about peonies. She said something about budget. I nodded.

Across the table, Cillian was talking to his father about a hotel acquisition in Miami. His hands moved when he spoke. Confident. Precise. I watched those hands and thought about the penthouse I'd never been invited to. I thought about Peyton curled against his side.

I pressed my palms flat against my thighs under the table. My fingers were shaking. I made them stop.

"Adalynn?"

I looked up. Mrs. Hayes was watching me.

"I asked if you'd confirmed the photographer," she said.

I smiled. "Yes. Three weeks ago."

She made a small sound. Not quite approval. Close enough.

I picked up my wine glass. I didn't drink. I just held it. The stem was cold.

Somewhere between the soup and the salad, I made a decision. I would not confront him. I would not cry. I would not give him the satisfaction of watching me break.

I would simply leave.

---

The next morning, I drove to a coffee shop in midtown I'd never been to before. I parked three blocks away. I used the payphone outside.

Kingsley picked up on the second ring.

"Ada?"

My brother's voice. Steady. Real.

"I might need to leave New York," I said. My voice didn't shake. I was proud of that. "Soon."

Silence. Three seconds. I counted them.

"Tell me when," Kingsley said. "I'll have everything ready."

I closed my eyes. "I don't know yet. But soon."

"Okay."

That was all. No questions. No demands for explanations. Just: Okay.

I hung up. I stood on the sidewalk. The November wind cut through my coat. People rushed past with coffee cups and briefcases. The city moved around me like I wasn't there.

For the first time in five years, I felt something that wasn't grief. It felt like the first breath after nearly drowning.

I got back in my car. I had work to do.
