Chapter 1 of After My Fiancé Chose His Mistress, I Married His Rival

I spent forty minutes on my hair.

I know that sounds small. But I'd been waiting three years for Dariel to come home, and I wanted everything to be right. The brownstone smelled like rosemary and roasted lamb—Mom had called the caterer twice that week. There were fresh flowers on the sideboard. Candles on the table. The good crystal.

I wore the navy dress he always liked.

I was standing in the foyer when the car pulled up outside. I watched through the sidelight window, that familiar flutter rising in my chest. Three years. London. His research, his career, his future that I'd helped make possible. I pressed my palm flat against my sternum like I could hold the feeling still.

Then the car door opened, and she stepped out first.

She was tall. Dark hair, red coat, a smile that knew exactly what it was doing. She took Dariel's arm before his foot hit the pavement.

I didn't move.

Dariel looked up and found my face through the window. Something shifted in his expression. Not guilt, exactly. Something worse. Relief, maybe. Like a man who'd already made his decision and was grateful the moment had finally arrived.

Mom appeared at my shoulder. I heard her breath catch.

"Hadley—"

"It's fine," I said. "Let them in."

Her name was Chana Mendoza. Dariel introduced her at the door with his hand pressed to the small of her back, his voice steady, almost rehearsed. She shook my mother's hand with both of hers, the way people do when they want to seem warm. Her eyes found mine over my mother's shoulder, and she smiled at me like I was someone she'd already decided she felt sorry for.

We sat down to dinner.

I watched the candles. I watched the wine get poured. I watched my father's jaw tighten as he looked between Dariel and the woman beside him, and I watched my mother fold her napkin in her lap three times without using it.

Dariel waited until the first course was cleared.

"I need to say something." He set down his fork. He didn't look at me right away. "Chana saved my life in London. There was an allergic reaction—I could have died. She was there." A pause. "What happened between us after that—I can't explain it, and I'm not going to pretend I can. But I can't stand here and let things continue the way they are. It wouldn't be fair. To either of you."

The table went silent.

I felt the words land. I felt them move through me the way cold water does—a full-body recognition, immediate and total. My thumbnail found my palm under the table. I pressed until I felt the half-moon of pressure anchor me to the room.

I looked at him. His eyes were wet. He had the expression of a man who believed he was being brave.

"I understand," I said.

My voice didn't shake. I made sure of that.

Chana reached across the table and covered Dariel's hand with hers. The gesture was practiced. Timed. She glanced at me once more with that same soft, pitying smile, and I understood then that she had been planning this moment for longer than tonight.

I excused myself before dessert.

---

Upstairs, I sat on the edge of my bed in the dark.

I didn't cry. I just sat there in my navy dress and listened to the muffled sounds of the dinner continuing below—silverware, low voices, the scrape of a chair. Life going on without me in it.

The ring caught the light from the window. Three years on my finger. I slid it off and set it on the nightstand. It made a small sound against the wood, smaller than it should have.

I picked up my phone.

Kade Cooper had proposed to me fourteen months ago, quietly, without spectacle, in the lobby of a benefit gala while everyone else was looking at the auction. I'd told him I was engaged. He'd nodded once and said, "If that ever changes, my answer won't."

I found his number. I pressed call.

It rang twice.

"Hadley." His voice was low and even, like he'd been awake.

"If your offer still stands," I said, "my answer is yes."

Three seconds of silence. Just three.

"It has always stood."

I closed my eyes. Outside, a cab moved down the street, its headlights sweeping briefly across the ceiling.

"Okay," I said.

"Okay," he said back. Not triumphant. Not rushed. Just steady, like a door held open for as long as it needed to be.

I hung up and sat in the dark a little longer.

Downstairs, I heard Chana laugh at something. A bright, carrying sound, designed to be heard.

I looked at the ring on the nightstand.

Then I looked away.
