Chapter 5

Suddenly, Carmen Pierce felt a sharp pain in her abdomen, and a warm liquid began to trickle down her legs.

"Help me, Carmen..."

In the bathroom, Carmen, already feeling uneasy, was startled by her sister’s urgent cry for help. She rushed out immediately. Seeing the steady flow of blood pouring from her sister's legs, she shakily picked up her phone and dialed emergency services: "This is 911, right? My sister's bleeding badly. Please come quickly to Liberty Street in Southside."

Four o'clock in the morning.

In the maternity ward.

Carmen sat by the hospital bed, watching her sister, who had fallen into an exhausted sleep. The doctor’s words echoed relentlessly in her mind: "I'm sorry, but we couldn't save the baby."

Tears welled up in Carmen’s eyes. The child her sister had tried so hard to keep was gone. Was this fate?

Hesitating, Carmen took out her phone and dialed Nathaniel's number. After a few rings, a woman’s sweet voice answered on the other end: "Who is calling at this hour? Don’t you know Nathaniel and I are trying to sleep?"

Carmen hung up without saying a word. That jerk Nathaniel wasn’t good enough for her sister!

When her sister finally woke up, it was already nine o'clock the next morning.

The first thing she saw upon opening her eyes was Carmen, dozing beside her. She couldn’t help but call out softly, "Carmen?"

Carmen immediately sat up straight at the sound and, pretending as if nothing had happened, smiled and said, "Sis, you’re awake. Are you hungry? I’ll get you something to eat."

She intended to wait until her sister was emotionally stable before telling her about the miscarriage.

But her sister calmly asked, "Carmen, is my baby gone?"

Carmen had expected her sister to be heartbroken and devastated, but she didn’t shed a single tear.

"Don’t worry," Carmen whispered in comfort, "you’ll have more children in the future."

With a bitter smile, her sister replied, "Future? Nathaniel and I don’t have a future."

The baby had been the only link left between her and Nathaniel. Now that the child was gone, how could there be a future?

Her sister's calmness made Carmen uneasy. "Sis?"

"Carmen, can you help me find a lawyer?" her sister suddenly changed the topic.

Carmen frowned. "Why do you need a lawyer?"

Her sister lowered her gaze, hiding her emotions. "It's time to divorce Nathaniel."

Carmen was taken aback. She had tried countless times to persuade her sister to let go of the marriage, only to be met with resistance. And now, suddenly, she wanted a divorce? Was it because of the child they lost?

But Carmen chose not to question further and simply nodded. "Alright. I’ll find the best lawyer for you!"

In the past, her sister had done everything she could to take care of and protect her. From now on, Carmen would be her sister’s strongest support!

As Carmen stepped out of the maternity ward, she spotted two familiar figures not far away. It was Ellianna Moreno and Bo Montgomery, her former fiancé and her ex-best friend.

Carmen had no intention of engaging with them and turned to leave.

But Ellianna, with a sweet voice, called out to her, "Carmen, what are you doing at the hospital? Are you feeling unwell?"

Carmen stopped in her tracks and turned around to look at the woman before her, who pretended to be gentle and concerned, masking her true nature.

Ellianna used to act all innocent and caring, making Carmen believe she was a genuine friend. Only later did she realize the kind of deceit that lay beneath that façade—the same friend who had been secretly involved with the unfaithful Bo Montgomery all along!

With a cold smirk, Carmen replied, "This is the maternity ward. What do you think I’m doing here?"

"Are you pregnant?" Bo’s expression darkened, and his gaze became sharper.

He and Carmen had been together for over two years, and he had never even kissed her. And now, barely a year after their breakup, she was pregnant? Had her former elegance all been an act?

Ellianna’s eyes briefly flashed with something unreadable, but she maintained a look of concern. "Carmen, I haven’t heard about you having a boyfriend. Whose child is it?"

Suddenly, Ellianna feigned shock, covering her mouth. "You didn’t... get involved with someone wealthy, did you?"

Carmen’s eyes were cold as she swept her gaze over Ellianna, her red lips curving upward slightly. "Does it concern you?"

As she spoke, Carmen’s refined and captivating face exuded an untouchable superiority, no longer bearing any trace of the fallen heiress she once was.

Ellianna clenched her fingers tighter, her gaze darkening. She had waited so long for Carmen’s downfall, to finally step over her. Yet Carmen had found herself a wealthy patron? Did she think a rich old man would impress Ellianna?

Ellianna struck a pose as if they were still the best of friends. "Carmen, how could you do something so beneath you?"

Carmen chuckled lightly. "Even at my lowest, I’m better than those who rummage through garbage—or rather, steal garbage."

The emphasis on "steal" was drawn out deliberately, making Bo’s face darken instantly.

Did she just imply he was trash?

Unperturbed, Ellianna reached into her designer purse and pulled out an invitation, handing it to Carmen. "Next Friday is Bo and my engagement party. We hope you’ll come."

Carmen took the invitation with an expressionless face and a seductive smile. "Rest assured, I’ll be there promptly."

And with that, she walked away, her every step proud and unyielding under their meaningful gazes.

Watching Carmen's retreating figure, Ellianna deliberately teased Bo, "Bo, I didn’t expect Carmen to be a kept woman. How could she stoop so low?"

She kept her eyes on Bo’s to see his reaction.

Bo casually wrapped an arm around Ellianna’s waist, unfazed. "Ellianna, I no longer have any ties to her. You said you weren't feeling well, remember? Let’s go see the doctor."

Seeing her desired reaction, a satisfied smile played on Ellianna’s lips.

Elsewhere, Carmen thought she would feel sad or upset by seeing Bo and Ellianna. But she didn’t. Instead, they left her feeling disgusted and nauseated.

Leaving the hospital, Carmen headed straight to a law firm. She hadn’t anticipated running into Jayden Montgomery and Reece Morrison on her way out. They had just stepped out of a sleek, black Mercedes, flanked by two bodyguards in black suits.

Jayden, still wearing the same black trench coat from last night, exuded an air of command and resolve, displaying no emotion as he strode purposefully in her direction.

There was no denying that the man carried a formidable presence that demanded attention.

No wonder people in the city referred to him as the "Grim Reaper."

Carmen contemplated whether to greet him, but Jayden didn’t spare her so much as a glance as he passed her, heading into the law firm, his demeanor cold as if she were a stranger.

Carmen forced a smile, feeling a twinge of bitterness.

What was she expecting, really? Apart from the night they had shared, weren’t they merely strangers?

Before entering the law firm, Reece gave Carmen a curious glance. Not because of anything else, but because of her excessively beautiful face.

If the Pierce family hadn’t lost everything, he couldn’t imagine what sort of man would be worthy of such a remarkable woman.

Unfortunately, the Pierce family had fallen, and their glory was no more.

"Jayden," Reece queried with a hint of mischief as he caught up with Jayden’s stride, "what did you think of that girl just now?"

Chapter 6

"Which girl?" Jayden Montgomery asked Reece Morrison with a casual air.

"The one we ran into at the entrance before, Carmen Pierce, once the belle of South City," Reece responded, clicking his tongue in admiration. "She's gorgeous, but the shadow of her father's conviction lingers. Seriously, who in London would want to marry her with that hanging over her?"

Jayden raised an eyebrow, his gaze steely. "How can you be so sure her father was guilty? Were you there to see it happen?"

Reece was taken aback by Jayden's sudden intensity. "Well, the court gave its verdict, right? Doesn't that settle it?"

Jayden shrugged slightly. "You know, appearances can be deceiving."

Reece leaned in, curious. "Jayden, do you think her father might have been framed?"

Jayden's expression revealed nothing. "Pierce Corporation was booming. Do you really think Nathaniel Pierce would kill over a few million pounds?"

He recalled meeting Nathaniel Pierce a year ago—a balanced, principled man who wouldn't sacrifice ethics for profit. Hard to imagine such a person committing murder.

Yet, the corporate world was a cold war. One misstep, and you're finished.

Reece raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "So, someone took him down?"

Jayden simply gave Reece a pointed look before heading into a law office without saying another word.

Reece caught up quickly.

"Jayden, Reece, good to see you!" welcomed a man with a suave demeanor, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses as he rose to greet them.

Warren Gray offered a polished smile. "I've gathered all the intel on Wallace Corporation's legal slip-ups for you to look over."

Jayden nodded in acknowledgment, "Appreciate the effort."

Reece couldn't help his curiosity. "Jayden, what’s the play here? Wallace has been a steady partner, and they wouldn't dare cross us."

Jayden's thoughts wandered to Carmen's innocent face, and he asked quietly, "What was Carmen Pierce doing here earlier?"

The question was directed at Warren.

Warren hesitated, intrigued by Jayden's sudden interest in Carmen, whose standing was somewhat tarnished in elite circles. Yet, he replied candidly, "She was seeking a lawyer for her sister’s divorce. I’ve assigned it to one of our junior associates."

Jayden's brow tightened with thought. "You handle it yourself."

It was a directive, not a suggestion.

Warren was taken aback. Jayden requesting his direct involvement in a case was unusual, except where Carmen was concerned.

Reece had a lightbulb moment. "Victor Wallace, CEO of Wallace Corporation, used to partner with Nathaniel Pierce. When Pierce Corporation crumbled, Wallace was quick to cut ties and blame Nathaniel."

Yet, the alliance between Montgomery Corporation and Wallace Corporation remained unaffected.

Reece couldn’t resist teasing, "Jayden, are you into Carmen? Wasn't she your nephew's ex-fiancée—"

Jayden silenced him with a sharp glance. "If you're tired of talking, I can fix that."

Reece clammed up, realizing he'd pushed the joke too far.

The shrill ring of a phone sliced through the tension.

Jayden pulled his phone from his pocket and, seeing the caller ID, his expression hardened. He declined the call without hesitation.

Warren glimpsed the caller ID and offered gently, "Jayden, it’s been two years since you returned to the Montgomerys. Aren’t you going to mend things with Old Mr. Montgomery?"

Jayden's eyes gleamed with icy determination. "He doesn't deserve that."

Silence descended, laden with discomfort.

Reece knew better than to broach the subject of Jayden's grandfather, aware it was a trigger for his temper.

Shifting gears, Reece noted Jayden wasn't wearing his usual watch. "Jayden, where’s that watch your brother Musa gave you? Haven't seen it on you lately."

He thought it might lighten the mood, but instead, Jayden's face grew even colder. "At the family estate."

Reece cringed internally. Why was he so good at finding sore spots today?

Meanwhile, Carmen sat in a cab headed to the hospital, staring thoughtfully out the window as the scenery zipped by.

She had hoped to leave a lasting impression on Jayden Montgomery, but clearly, she’d overestimated her effect. Maybe, to him, she was just another face in the crowd.

Her phone rang, pulling her from her thoughts. Seeing it was her close friend Lorelei Bell, she answered, "Hi, Lorelei."

Lorelei’s eager voice buzzed through the line. "Carmen, how did things go last night? Did you manage to catch Jayden's attention?"

Remembering Jayden's earlier iciness, Carmen sighed quietly, "Not quite."

"With your looks and charm, how could he not notice you?" Lorelei exclaimed, incredulous. "I mean, is he just oblivious or what?"

Chapter 7

Only Carmen knew how truly masculine Jayden Montgomery was; some might even call him the quintessential alpha male. Last night's experience had been more thrilling than a roller coaster!

"Maybe... it's just that my allure isn't quite enough yet," Carmen pondered thoughtfully. "But that's okay, I'll win him over eventually."

"Do you want me to trace his digital footprint, find out where he is, and maybe arrange a chance meeting?" suggested Lorelei Bell, one of the top three hackers in the computer science department at Midlands University, eager to help out.

Carmen's expression darkened slightly. "It's rumored that before Jayden returned to the Montgomery family, there was a mysterious gap in his history. I suspect he intentionally erased this. Lorelei, I need you to look into something for me first..."

On the other end of the line, Lorelei assured her, "Carmen, don't worry, I've got this covered!"

After hanging up, Carmen's sharp eyes grew introspective. If Jayden wasn't paying her any attention, she would have to take the initiative. Winning over this man was just a matter of time.

An hour later, Carmen stood at the door of her sister’s hospital room, holding a pot of homemade chicken soup. Suddenly, she heard a man's accusing voice from inside: "Nancy, why didn't you tell me you had a miscarriage? If Dr. Green hadn't called, how long were you planning on keeping it from me? Do I even matter to you?"

Carmen froze, her expression going cold.

Inside the room, Nancy lifted her swollen eyes to look at the imposing figure of North Fletcher standing by her bedside. Her eyes were devoid of emotion. "North, did you remember you were my husband when you were with another woman?"

There was a flicker of panic in North's eyes, but it quickly vanished as he replied with self-righteous indignation, "Nancy, your family might be bankrupt, but out of old affection, I still let you have the title of Mrs. Fletcher. What more could you ask for?"

As North spoke, he maintained an air of superiority. Nancy saw not a hint of guilt or remorse in his eyes. Her heart ached as if a swarm of ants were gnawing at it, already riddled with wounds.

Was this the man she had been so determined to marry, against all odds?

Suppressing her emotions, Nancy spoke calmly, "North, let's get a divorce."

North merely smirked. "Nancy, you'd better think this through. If we divorce, you’ll have nothing."

In his view, the Pierce family was already bankrupt. If Nancy left him, she'd be nothing more than a discarded woman. Even with her beauty, no one in high society would dare to marry her!

So he was certain Nancy would never divorce him.

"I have thought it through," Nancy said, her expression eerily calm. "Three days after being discharged, we'll handle the divorce proceedings."

The smile on North's face slowly darkened. He never imagined that Nancy, who had clung so desperately to their marriage, would be so determined to end it.

To be honest, Nancy was only twenty-three, with a youthful glow, her features delicate and beautiful, more captivating than any other woman he had been with. More importantly, she was poised, elegant, and dignified, the perfect candidate for a wife.

But isn't it true that the unattainable is always the most desirable? He preferred women with a wild streak!

In his mind, a man's infidelity was normal, and he saw no issue with having fun with other women. But Nancy wanting a divorce? How could that be?

North was inexplicably frustrated, "Nancy, don't forget, we have a prenup. If you divorce me, you won’t get a single cent!"

He thought this would deter Nancy. After all, the Pierce family was bankrupt, and she could no longer live the high life she once knew.

Nancy looked at the man she had once shared a bed with, now a stranger. How blind had she been to believe a man like this could offer her a lifetime of happiness?

Suddenly, a sharp voice came from the door: "North Fletcher, don't forget that your family’s first successful business deal was made with my sister's dowry and that it was our Pierce family’s connections that helped you get into high society. Where do you get the nerve to act so superior? Is it false bravado?"

North turned to see Carmen entering the room, carrying a thermos. Despite the summer heat, like Nancy, Carmen wore only a strap dress. Her hair cascaded down her back like seaweed, her beauty fresh and unique.

Both daughters of the Pierce family were exceptionally beautiful, standout figures in the upper echelons of society.

If Nancy was the kind of beauty that seemed delicate and melancholic, then Carmen was a beauty with a fierce edge.

And this was the kind of beauty North preferred!

After a moment, North asked, "Carmen, what do you mean by this?"

Carmen set the thermos on the bedside table, her smile sly and mysterious. "My sister won’t take a dime from you, but you will return the billion-dollar dowry to her, with interest!"

North retorted, "You just said it yourself, it was a dowry."

Carmen’s lips curled into a mocking smile. "North Fletcher, I recall a clause in your prenup with my sister prohibiting infidelity. You've broken this agreement, giving my sister the right to demand the return of her dowry, or, upon divorce, half your assets. Which will it be?"

North’s face turned dark with rage. He had always known Carmen wasn’t easy to deal with but never expected she had been strategizing all along.

But quickly, he sneered, "That would only work if you can afford a good lawyer."

With those words, North stormed out, slamming the door.

Carmen’s gaze darkened. North's implication was clear: even if he was at a disadvantage, he had the money to hire a top lawyer and win the case.

People only cared about outcomes; no one cared about the truth!

That’s how her father had been wrongfully accused and imprisoned!

Thinking of this, Carmen tightened her grip.

This time, she wouldn’t let her sister be bullied by this scumbag North Fletcher!

Hiding her true intentions, Carmen feigned calm as she opened the thermos with a smile. "Nancy, I just went to a restaurant and cooked some chicken soup for you. Have a taste."

She picked up a spoonful of soup and brought it to Nancy's lips, but Nancy looked at her with worry etched on her face. "Carmen, we can't win against North Fletcher..."

Over the past year, Nancy had come to understand the ways of the Fletchers and North.

Getting that billion-dollar dowry back from the Fletchers would be nearly impossible.

She wanted no further entanglements with North Fletcher, just to escape him and the Fletcher family...

Carmen set the thermos aside, her expression earnest as she looked at Nancy. "Sis, I know what you’re worried about, but the Fletchers swindled you out of that billion. We have to get it back!"

Nancy lowered her eyes. "But Carmen, we don't have the money to hire a good lawyer..."

"Sis!" Carmen immediately grasped Nancy's hand, her voice unwaveringly firm. "The Pierce family may have fallen, but we sisters can’t. Constant retreat and concessions will only invite more bullying. Don’t you understand this yet?"
