Chapter 1 of After My Fiancé Called Me Crazy, I Vanished

The candles had been lit at seven. By nine, they were half gone.

I counted the wax drips down the left taper. Eleven. I counted the tiles between my chair and the window. Fourteen. Counting is what I do when my hands start to argue with me. My right one was already curling in on itself, the thumb pulling toward the palm like it wanted to hide.

Across the table, Everett's chair sat pushed in. His napkin still folded into that stiff little cone Marta makes. His water glass sweating a ring onto the linen.

Twenty-three floors below, Central Park was a black lake with lights around the edges. I've looked at that view for thirteen years. I know exactly how many windows you can see in the building across the reservoir when the fog stays away. Four hundred and six.

I had been practicing one sentence since six o'clock.

*Thank you for staying.*

Five words. Sounds simple. It isn't. My mouth takes a sentence I build perfectly in my head and drops most of it on the floor. Usually what survives is a syllable or two, and by then whoever I'm talking to has already finished the thought for me, wrong.

So I rehearse. Out loud, alone, over and over, until the shape of it lives in my jaw. *Thang. Th-ang you. For. Stay.* Three hours of that. My throat was raw.

He wasn't going to hear it. I knew that around eight-thirty. I kept practicing anyway, because stopping felt like agreeing.

The cake sat at the end of the table under a glass dome. White, three tiers, twenty-three candles arranged in a spiral. Everett orders it from the same place every year. I have never once been asked what kind I like.

At 9:41, my phone buzzed against the tablecloth.

Unknown number. A video file. No message.

My left hand works better. I got the thumb down on the screen.

The guest suite. Two floors below me. I know that headboard — pale gray, tufted, Eleanor picked it. Afternoon light coming through the sheers, so the timestamp in the corner wasn't lying. 3:14 p.m.

Everett's back. The line of his shoulders I have watched from a wheelchair, from a walker, from a hospital gurney, for most of my life. And under him, one hand spread flat on his spine, dark hair fanned across the pillow.

Natalia.

The woman who bathes me. Who buttons my blouses. Who counts out my baclofen into a little paper cup every morning at seven and says *good girl* when I swallow.

The video was eleven seconds long. I watched it once.

I waited for something to happen inside me. A scream, maybe. Some enormous sound. What came instead was very quiet, and very cold, and it settled in my chest like a stone going down a well.

My hands had locked. Both of them, fists curled hard enough that the nails found my palms.

So I counted breaths. In for four. Out for six. That's what the third therapist taught me, the one who said I could learn to transfer myself unassisted. She lasted two months. Everett said she was pushing me too hard.

In for four. Out for six.

Sixty-two breaths before my fingers let go.

Then I opened my contacts and scrolled to a number I hadn't touched in three years.

**Dad.**

I don't have a picture attached to it. I don't have a nickname. Just the four letters, sitting there under a stranger's number, the way you keep a key to a house you no longer live in.

Typing is the hardest thing I do. My index finger goes where it wants, not where I aim it. Every letter is a negotiation. Backspace, backspace, again.

It took forty minutes.

*Dad. I want to come.*

I read it eight times. Then I sent it, before the part of me that has been trained for thirteen years to check with Everett first could catch up.

I set the phone face-down beside the cake.

The candles kept burning. Nobody sang.

He came home at midnight.

I heard the private elevator, then his shoes on the marble, then his voice already talking before he reached the room. "Camille. Baby. Traffic on the FDR was a nightmare, there was some kind of— God, it's late."

A jeweler's box in his hand. Robin's-egg blue. He set it by my plate like a man paying a parking ticket.

He leaned down and kissed my forehead. He smelled like cigar smoke and something floral underneath it that was not mine.

"You look tired," he said, straightening. "Have you eaten? You didn't eat."

My jaw opened. *Thank you for staying.* Three hours in my mouth, and now the wrong sentence entirely, and it came out as "Th—" and then nothing, just air, just my chin pulling sideways the way it does when I push too hard.

"Hey. Hey." He put two fingers on my shoulder. "Don't. It's okay. I'll have Natalia take you up."

She was already in the doorway. Navy scrubs, hair still damp, face arranged into that soft warmth everyone in this family adores.

"Happy birthday, sweetheart," she said. "Did you have a lovely evening?"

In the elevator, she reached over and straightened my collar. Slow. Careful. The way you'd adjust a coat on a mannequin you own.

"Such a shame," she said, "about the video quality. So grainy."

The doors opened. She held them with one hand and smiled, waiting for me to shuffle past her.

I counted the tiles down the hall. Thirty-one.

In my room, I opened the tablet and typed *Zurich* into the search bar — the institute, the one Everett said I wasn't ready for. I read for two hours.

My father had already answered.

*I'll send the ticket. Just say when.*

I stared at it until my hands stopped shaking.

Then I closed the tablet, and didn't say when.
