Chapter 1 of After My Death, My Boyfriend Regretted It

My mate's adoptive sister asked me to go for a walk in the mountain forest and we encountered a sudden flash flood.

My mate Nathan, the Alpha of Snow Peak pack, rushed to save us.

But because we were both trapped on a breaking tree branch above the raging flood, he could only save one person at a time.

To save his physically weak adoptive sister, my mate abandoned me - his Luna who was five months pregnant.

I begged him desperately to save me.

He watched as the flood waters dragged me under.

"Sarah has always been weak since childhood. If we leave her here, she'll die."

"Your wolf is strong enough to swim, but Sarah can't swim."

But after my death, he went mad.

He watched as the flood waters dragged me under.

"Sarah has always been weak since childhood. If we leave her here, she'll die."

"Your wolf is strong enough to swim, but Sarah can't swim."

But after my death, he went mad.

……

When Nathan arrived at the flood site, Sarah and I were clinging desperately to an ancient oak tree's thick branch, suspended above the raging waters.

Half of my body was already in the water. The current pulled at my legs mercilessly, making it nearly impossible to maintain my grip. Sharp pain shot through my abdomen, and I knew something was terribly wrong with the baby.

I hadn't heard Sarah's voice in a while and grew worried. Even though my situation was dire, I still tried to comfort her. She was lying flat on the branch, in a much safer position than mine.

"Sarah, don't be afraid. Your brother will come save us soon."

Although Nathan and I were in the middle of a cold war after fighting about Sarah this morning, I believed he would come. I was carrying his pup after all.

Even if he didn't love me, I thought he would at least care about his unborn child.

But I overestimated how much the baby and I meant to him.

The flood waters were too swift for boats. The rescue team had only one option - to wade through with safety ropes, saving us one at a time.

When faced with choosing who to save first, he coldly told me:

"I have to save Sarah first."

"What?" I stared at him in disbelief as the water continued to pull at my body. His voice remained emotionless.

"Nora, I need you to understand. Sarah has always been weak. If I save you first, she might die. I can't watch her die."

My arms were shaking from the long, hard grip on the branch. The branch had been making an ominous crunching sound.

"Listen to me when we rescue Sarah, they'll go on to rescue you. You're Luna, and you're usually fit and strong, and I trust you, honey."

I tried hard not to cry, but my voice still trembled. The current was getting stronger by the minute.

"Nathan, you can't do this. I can wait, but our baby can't. Please!"

"No."

"Nathan, please don't do this. Our pup will really die." I looked at him in desperate anguish as my fingers began to slip.

"Nora, if you lose the pup, consider it payback to Sarah. You caused her to lose her pup before, so now you can repay that debt."

"Besides, whether that pup is even mine, you know very well. I'll just pretend that bastard never existed."

The coldness in his voice made my whole body shake. I tried to explain through chattering teeth.

"How could this baby not be yours? Back then I didn't..."

But before I could finish, my numb fingers finally lost their grip. The raging waters pulled me under instantly.

The current tossed me like a rag doll. Water filled my lungs as I desperately tried to surface. In my panic, I could feel my pup's distress through our bond.

The murky waters spun me around until I lost all sense of direction. My lungs burned for air. The last thing I saw through the churning water was Nathan pulling Sarah to safety, not even looking in my direction.

My heart froze like ice as consciousness faded. I had loved him for seven years, and with our unborn pup, but still meant less to him than Sarah.

He even claimed the baby wasn't his just to justify saving Sarah first.

And so I died, my body surrendering to the flood. My spirit floated in the air, watching Sarah being rescued.

My mate held Sarah with pure joy of having her back, wrapping her in warm blankets.

His pack member seemed unable to watch this and quietly reminded him:

"Alpha, Luna was swept away by the flood, what are we going to do?"

"Then keep looking. What's the point of telling me?"Nathan's look was annoyed, "Don't worry, her wolf can swim, she's good in the water, she'll be fine. "

Hearing these heartless words from my mate, my soul ached with cold. I was his Luna, the mother of his pup, yet my life meant nothing to him.

It was as if I wasn't fighting for my life, but just out for a casual walk.

"Brother, I was so scared. I thought I'd never see you again. My stomach hurts - please take me to the pack doctor. I'm worried about my condition." Sarah turned pale, looking pitiful.

"Don't worry, little wolf, I'll take you to see the doctor right away."

Just like that, he carried Sarah away. He left so decisively, not even glancing back once at the waters where his "missing" Luna had disappeared.

At that moment, I felt a strange relief in being dead. If I were still alive, how could I face this betrayal?

2

I followed him all the way to the pack hospital, my spirit form passing effortlessly through the stark white walls to Sarah's treatment room.

Looking at Sarah lying on the pristine hospital bed, wrapped in warm blankets and acting vulnerable, I couldn't help but think of my unborn pup. My precious little one who had formed a bond with me but never got the chance to see this world.

My wolf's spirit howled in agony at the loss of our pup.

I glared at Sarah and Nathan with fury, my ghostly form trembling with rage. If I could, I would have shifted into my most fearsome wolf form and made this pair of traitors pay for my pup's life with their own.

"Brother, are you blaming me? If it weren't for me, you could have chosen to save your Luna first."

"Don't overthink it." Nathan held Sarah close, gently patting her back. His voice was tender, soft like morning dew-a tone I'd never heard him use with me in all our years together. "You're weaker than her. I've arranged people to search for her. She's strong and her wolf is powerful. She won't die from this."

"But she's still your Luna, even if she made mistakes..."

"Mistakes deserve punishment." Nathan's icy words made my soul ache.

My mate, do you know?

Your so-called punishment has already taken both my life and our innocent pup's life.

We had such a long history together. Nathan and I were childhood friends, running through the forests together in our wolf forms. Our packs had arranged our mating when we were young, hoping to strengthen the alliance between Snow Peak and Moonstone packs.

Sarah came to Snow Peak pack when she was six, a small, fragile wolf pup abandoned by her birth pack. Nathan treated his adopted sister even better than a blood sister would be treated, fiercely protective of her every need and whim.

I had loved Nathan since we were pups, my wolf recognizing him as our true mate long before our arranged mating. But he always remained distant with me, his wolf turning away from mine, rejecting me more than once.

I used to suspect he had feelings for Sarah, but he insisted she was just a sister.

Later, Sarah left the pack and was said to be traveling to find herself. That night, Nathan drank a lot. I picked him up at the bar and drove him home, where he pinned me against the wall and I stretched my body to him almost euphorically.

Finally with him, the pleasure of being marked made me so dizzy that I didn't even realize if the "coyote" he mumbled afterward was calling me or not.

The next day, Nathan looked at me with a grim face but said he would take responsibility.

That's how Nathan mated me. No courtship dance under the full moon, no mating ceremony before the packs, no honeymoon run through our territories, not even a proper declaration of love.

I knew he didn't love me. He only mated me because he'd marked me while drunk and felt obligated.

But I couldn't help falling deeper. I thought after mating, he would eventually love me the way I loved him.

After mating though, he remained cold and distant. Even our intimate moments felt like mere duty - three times a week, no more, no less.

Then two years into our mating, Sarah returned to the pack pregnant, refusing to name the father.

During that time, Nathan would return to the pack house every day, even cooking dinner just to make sure Sarah ate well.

I couldn't control my jealousy. I fought with Nathan, losing control of my emotions and words.

"You care about her so much - anyone who didn't know better would think she was your mate instead of your sister."

"You're so protective of her - is her pup yours?"

That time, Nathan raged, he slapped me hard and unleashed his alpha power, even pressing me to the point of forcing my wolf form out.

I hadn't noticed Sarah at the doorway. Crying, I said I wanted to return to my birth pack.

Sarah stopped me.

"Sister, I didn't know you thought so poorly of me. I still have some dignity - I would never mate with my own brother. I'll leave the pack tomorrow."

Nathan and I didn't speak for half a month after that - or rather, he gave me the silent treatment.

Sarah didn't end up leaving. Once I calmed down, I felt guilty and apologized to her.

But Sarah must have harbored resentment over this incident.

On a family camping trip, she purposely grabbed my hand on a hillside and used the counterforce to pretend that I had pushed her down the hill, and just like that, she miscarried, lost her cub, and in the end, didn't know who that cub belonged to.

Nathan happened to witness the whole thing.

"Nora, if anything happens to Sarah, I will never forgive you for the rest of my life."

After that, Nathan grew increasingly disgusted with me, even suggesting we break our mating bond.

I desperately refused to break the bond, but our mating still teetered on the edge of collapse.

Sarah remained a thorn between us that couldn't be removed or ignored.

Looking at Nathan now, I wondered if he would be happy knowing I was dead. Finally free of me.

Nathan's phone rang. He answered it.

Nathan didn't put it on speaker, but my spirit form could hear both sides clearly. Curiously, I floated closer to Nathan, wondering if it was the search team calling about my death.

I watched Nathan's face, curious to see his reaction when he learned of my death.

But the caller ID showed my name, and the voice that came through was unmistakably mine.

"Nathan, how dare you choose Sarah over me. I want to break our mating bond!"

The phone carried my voice perfectly, but Nathan's face turned dark.

"Nora, since you're fine, get back to the pack house."

"I'll only return if you send Sarah away."

"Then don't come back at all. You can die out there for all I care."

Nathan angrily hung up the phone. His last words pierced my soul like an ice shard.

I had indeed died out there, just as he wished. I would never return to the pack house again.

I was intensely curious about who made that call, since it obviously wasn't me.

"Brother, you should still go check on her. She's carrying your pup after all."

"Pup?" Nathan scoffed, his wolf's lip curling in disgust. "Who knows whose bastard it is."

"Even if it was my pup, she and the pup together aren't worth half as much as you, Sarah."

Dead as I was, why did my soul still feel such pain? I clutched at my non-existent heart, my spirit form trembling.

He hated me so much that even when my father, the Moonstone Pack Alpha, died defending our territories, Nathan remained unmoved.

3

I watched Nathan and Sarah's interaction with growing coldness in my spectral form.

"Brother, I love you," Sarah suddenly reached for Nathan's face, her eyes filled with desperate longing. "Please break your mating bond with her and be with me instead. I've loved you for so long."

"Sarah, no, no, we're siblings." Nathan jerked back, his body tense with conflict.

"Nathan, you're still treating me like your real sister? You weren't like this back then." Sarah moved closer, her hand clutching his shirt. "Don't forget I'm not blood-related to the Snow Peak pack." She suddenly lunged forward, pressing her lips against his. "I'm not your real sister. I can be so much more."

"Sarah!" Pack Elder Marie's voice cracked through the room like a whip. She stood in the doorway, her face twisted with fury and disgust. "What are you doing? Have you lost your mind?"

Sarah didn't back away from Nathan. Instead, she pressed closer, her voice challenging. "Mother, you've always loved me best. Brother can mate anyone - why not me? What makes Nora better than me? I've loved him longer. I've always been the one by his side."

"You are his sister, not his mate, much less his Luna! I adopted you back then, but I didn't expect you to repay me like this." The former Luna, now Elder Marie trembled with anger.

"Why not, that's how you drove me away back in the day, but mom, my brother wasn't happy." She took Nathan's hand, a smug look in her eyes.

My spirit felt an overwhelming chill. So I was the only one kept in the dark. This sickening relationship between Nathan and Sarah - apparently everyone knew except me.

"Enough!" Elder Marie stormed into the room, physically pulling Sarah away from Nathan. "You were raised together! You played together as children! How dare you try to seduce your own brother? The pack would never accept this perversion!"

"Nathan," Elder Marie turned to her son, her voice shaking with rage. "You're already mated to Nora, and she's carrying your pup. What are you doing letting your sister act like this? Have you both lost your minds?"

She grabbed Nathan's arm hard enough to leave marks. "Use your mate bond now! Contact Nora immediately. Something feels wrong."

Nathan closed his eyes, attempting to reach through the mate bond. His face grew increasingly troubled as the seconds ticked by.

"I... I can't feel her," he admitted, a hint of panic creeping into his voice. "The bond feels... empty."

Sarah's eyes lit up. "Brother, I might know what's happening." She reached for her phone. "There's an ancient magic that can completely seal a mate bond. It blocks all communication, location sensing, even... feelings of betrayal."

She pulled up a video on her phone. "A friend sent me this earlier. I was afraid to show you because I knew it would upset you."

The video showed me sitting at the Silver Moon restaurant with a handsome young man. We were feeding each other cake, laughing intimately.

"The timestamp shows this was just taken," Sarah said softly. "That's why you can't feel her through the bond."

Elder Marie's eyes narrowed with suspicion. "That video could easily be fake."

"Sarah," Nathan's voice was tight with barely controlled rage. "Tell me more about this magic. You're saying if she... if she's with someone else, I wouldn't feel it through the bond?"

"Yes, brother. The magic completely blocks everything."

"No wonder..." Nathan muttered under his breath, his hands clenching into fists.

"Nathan!" Elder Marie snapped. "Think carefully about what you're doing. You're going to regret this terribly."

She grabbed Nathan's arm hard enough to leave marks. "Go find Nora and apologize properly. I'll deal with your sister's madness. This ends now, before word spreads to other packs."

"Nora is still your Luna, regardless of past events. We don't know her condition, and you're here entertaining this... this obscenity!" Elder Marie's face was pale with fury. "Do you want our pack to become a laughingstock? Do you want to destroy everything your father built?"

"Mom, I'll apologize to Nora, but Sarah needs medical attention right now," Nathan said, still not moving away from Sarah. "You saw the video - she's clearly fine and... enjoying herself. Once Sarah is stable, I'll deal with this situation."

"Your priority should always be your partner! But you're totally twisted now!" Elder Mary slammed her hand on the table next to her." Your mate falls into the water unaware with your cubs in her arms, and not only are you not in a hurry, but you're here coddling the sister who tried to seduce you? What kind of Alpha are you?"

"Enough! Mom, I know what I'm doing on my own! You're retired, so don't always meddle in PACK affairs." Nathan's face was frosty as if he was looking at Mary with displeasure.

"If anything happens to the cubs, you'll regret it, Nathan." Tears fell from Mary's eyes as she took Nathan's hand and tried to lead him out of the hospital room.

Nathan shook her hand right off, "What cub? Sarah has said that magic can hide mate bonds and sense no betrayal, so who knows whose cub that is." He looked at his mother coldly, "James, Jack, are you dead? Come in and take the Elder back to rest yet." He called out to his guards.

"Elder Mary, don't make this difficult for us." James and Jack looked at Mary with difficulty as she let out a long sigh and eventually left the ward.

Looking at her hunched back, I thought of my mom and wondered how upset she would be when she found out about this.
