Chapter 1 of After My Boyfriend Cheated with the Girl I Mentored

I found it at 11:47 on a Tuesday night.

I wasn't even looking for anything. I was sitting cross-legged on my couch in my Tribeca apartment, half a glass of Sancerre on the coffee table, scrolling through Reddit the way I sometimes do when I can't sleep. Real estate threads, mostly. Sometimes architecture. It's mindless in a good way.

Then a post stopped me cold.

The username was something random—throwaway letters, numbers. The kind of account you make when you don't want to be found. The post was in r/relationships. The title read: *How do I end a 3-year relationship cleanly when her family just went bankrupt? I have a better option lined up.*

I put my wine down.

I read it twice. Then a third time.

The post described a girlfriend whose family had recently suffered an 'embarrassing financial situation.' It mentioned a three-year relationship. It said the poster had 'already moved on emotionally' and wanted to exit without 'looking like the bad guy.' It asked for advice on how to make her want to leave on her own—how to make her feel small enough to walk away quietly.

My chest didn't tighten. My hands didn't shake. What happened instead was quieter and more precise than that. Something in me went very, very still.

I knew it was Tobias. I knew it the way you know your own handwriting.

The phrasing. The framing. The specific, almost clinical way he described a three-year relationship as a liability to be managed. I had heard him talk about his startup competitors in exactly that tone. Detached. Strategic. Slightly bored.

I clicked into the comment history of the account that had given the most enthusiastic advice—a reply that read like it came from someone who had skin in the game. *Just make her feel like she's holding you back. Women like that always leave when they think they've become a burden.*

The burner account's post history loaded.

I went through it methodically. There were complaints about a 'boring mentor who never understood real ambition.' A comment about 'finally getting what I deserve after years of playing second.' A reference to a dinner at Maison Noir on West 14th—posted three weeks ago.

I opened a second tab. Pulled up Clare Moore's Instagram.

Third photo down. Maison Noir. Three weeks ago. *Little luxuries for a girl who's finally arrived.* Her caption. Her smile. Her hand resting on a table I recognized.

I sat with that for a moment.

Clare Moore. Twenty-four years old. Brooklyn girl. I had found her on a street corner in Bushwick two years ago, handing out flyers for a gym she didn't even use. She was freezing. She was sharp. I told her she was wasted there and I meant it. I got her a job at one of our marketing affiliates. I helped her build a wardrobe, a resume, a foothold. I did it because I believed in her.

Apparently, she had been using that foothold to climb somewhere else entirely.

I closed Instagram. I closed Reddit. I sat in the dark of my apartment and I did not cry.

What I did instead was open a new browser tab and pull up Hayes Capital's internal directory. I started a new document. I typed two names at the top. Tobias Wagner. Clare Moore. And then I began to make a list.

By midnight, the outline existed. By one in the morning, it had a shape. I went to bed at 1:15. I slept six hours, which is exactly what I always sleep.

The next morning I called my father on his private line. Not our usual Sunday call. He picked up on the second ring.

'Em.' His voice was steady. It always is.

'Dad.' I was standing at my kitchen window. The Hudson was flat and grey below. 'I need to tell you something.'

I told him everything. The post. The comment history. The Instagram check-in. The plan I had started to build in the dark.

He was quiet for a long moment after I finished. Not the silence of someone searching for words. The silence of someone who already knows what he's going to say and is simply deciding when.

'What do you need from me, Em?'

Just that. No lecture. No *I told you so*. No suggestion that I soften anything or step back or wait.

I told him what I needed.

'Done,' he said. 'All of it.'

I exhaled once. Slowly.

'Are you okay?' he asked.

I thought about it honestly. The way he had always taught me to.

'I will be,' I said.

He accepted that. Because he knows me. Because he raised me to mean what I say.

We hung up. I set my phone face-down on the counter. I finished my coffee. I got dressed—charcoal wool trousers, a cream silk blouse, my good coat. Nothing logo-heavy. Nothing that needed to announce itself.

Then I picked up my bag and went to the office.
