After My Boss Let Coworkers Slap Me, I Quit Summary

Seven years I gave Sterling Cole's company—the early mornings, the saved accounts, the disasters I smoothed over while he wore that serious charcoal suit. I knew every client, every deadline, every assistant's birthday. I thought building his empire brick by brick meant something. Then came the 10 AM all-hands meeting with no agenda, and Sterling stood at the head of the table, jaw tight, letting my coworkers slap me. So I walked out—and now he'll face the cost of losing the one who held it all together.

Chapter 1 of After My Boss Let Coworkers Slap Me, I Quit

I've been at Sterling Cole's firm for seven years. Seven years of early mornings and late nights, of saved accounts and smoothed-over disasters, of being the person everyone called when something was on fire. I knew every client's name, every contract deadline, every assistant's birthday. I built this place alongside Sterling, brick by brick, and I told myself that meant something.

I was straightening my desk when it started.

Sterling called the all-hands meeting at 10 AM. No agenda. Just a calendar invite with his name on it, which meant everyone showed up on time and sat very still.

He stood at the head of the conference table in his charcoal suit, the one he wore when he wanted to look serious. His jaw was tight. His cufflinks caught the light as he reached up and adjusted them — once, twice — and I filed that away without meaning to.

"The Harlow account is gone," he said. "Eight hundred thousand dollars. Gone."

The room went quiet in that particular way rooms go quiet when people are deciding whether to breathe.

I already knew about Harlow. I'd watched Sabrina Hunt spend two weeks on that presentation — two weeks of Sterling leaning over her shoulder, nodding at slides I would have torn apart in five minutes. I had no assigned role on the project. I'd said so, in writing, in an email Sterling had read and never responded to.

He looked directly at me.

"Kira was the senior team member in the room. The oversight failure is hers."

I felt every pair of eyes in that room move to my face.

I straightened my pen. Then I squared the edge of my file folder against the corner of my desk. My hands were steady. My face was steady. I had learned a long time ago — in a series of houses where I was a guest and never a daughter — that showing pain to people who caused it only gives them more to work with.

I said nothing. Sterling moved on.

That was when Sabrina crossed the room.

She was carrying two coffee cups, her dark hair falling softly around her face, her expression doing that thing it always did — slightly overwhelmed, slightly grateful, like the world was just a little too much for her and wasn't it kind of you to notice. She'd been at the firm for six weeks. Sterling had already bought her a Cartier bracelet to "boost her confidence."

Her foot caught on nothing.

The latte went down the front of my white blouse in a single, scalding wave.

I didn't move. The heat hit my skin and I stood there while it soaked through the fabric, while Sabrina gasped and covered her mouth with both hands, while her eyes went wide and wet with an apology she was already performing before the cup hit the floor.

"Oh my God — I'm so sorry — are you okay —"

Sterling was at her side in four steps. "Hey. Hey, are you all right? Did any get on you?"

He was asking her.

Not one person in that room handed me a napkin.

I looked down at my blouse. I looked back up. I picked up my bag.

That evening, I went home to the apartment I shared with Sterling on the Upper West Side and I told him we were done. Both things — the job and the seven years. My voice was very quiet and very clear, the way it gets when I have already decided something and am simply informing the other person.

He called it an overreaction. He said I was being dramatic. He straightened his cufflinks.

I went to the bedroom and started packing.

I pulled back the bedsheets to get to the spare bag I kept under the mattress. And there they were — a pair of torn black stockings, twisted into the fabric like they'd been there a while. Not mine. I don't own black stockings.

I stood there for a moment.

Then I picked them up, folded them once, and set them on Sterling's pillow. Neat. Centered. I finished packing in silence.

I texted Damian Hughes from the elevator.

I'm done with Sterling. I need help moving tonight.

I'd known Damian since college — a quiet, steady presence at the edges of my life for years. A friend of a friend who always made sure I got home safe, who never asked for anything in return. I didn't know, then, what I know now about how long he'd been paying attention.

He responded in under two minutes: On my way.

He canceled a flight to London. I found that out later. He didn't mention it.

He arrived in forty minutes with movers I didn't have to call and an apartment I didn't have to find. By midnight I was lying in a clean bed in a quiet room that smelled of fresh linen and nothing else.

No one else's perfume. No one else's shoes by the door.

Just silence, and a room with my name on the lease.

I stared at the ceiling for a long time.

I didn't cry.
