Chapter 1 of After My Alpha Tried to Destroy My Mother’s Grave

At 5:14 p.m. on the frozen perimeter trail, my mate mark flared with a heat that did not belong to me.

Through the mate bond, an unsealed mind-link bled straight into my skull. Grayson’s voice—soft, thick with a desperate tenderness he had never once offered me in five years of marriage—whispered into another woman's mind.

"It’s a smokescreen, Chelsea. Nothing more. Five years of keeping the elders off your back. You know you're the only one I actually chose."

A wave of foreign warmth flooded my chest—Grayson’s raw affection, laced with the sickly sweet scent of Chelsea’s vanilla and musk clinging to his pine and iron. Then the bond snapped shut. My collarbone turned from fire to ice, numb and hollow, like a door slamming shut in an empty house.

Inside my ribs, something cracked.

For five years, my wolf had slept, muted by Grayson's constant, heavy presence. Now, she slammed against my ribcage with a furious, blood-deep roar that rattled my teeth. *Liars,* she snarled. *Tear them down.*

I pressed my thumbnail deep into the tender skin of my left wrist until the skin went white and sharp pain grounded me. I didn't cry. I didn't run to the main house to scream. Tears were for women who still had something to lose. I turned on my heel and walked back through the snow in dead silence.

By nine that evening, the pack house echoed with low laughter from the main dining hall. Grayson had ordered a special cut of venison for Chelsea, celebrating her return from the southern clinic.

I took the service stairs down to the archives.

The basement smelled of damp concrete and old cedar. I used the Luna master key to open the heavy steel cabinet marked *Sanctuary Den Construction*. Two days ago, three pups in the nursery had started coughing blood, poisoned by wolfsbane dust embedded in the den's new wall insulation. Grayson had called it an accident.

I flipped through the carbon slips until my fingers hit the requisition log.

There it was. Batch 409-B. Wolfsbane-treated cedar planks, purchased at a discount from an unverified supplier. At the bottom of the page sat Grayson’s embossed Alpha seal, next to Chelsea’s neat, loopy signature in the receiving box.

She had bought the cheap poison. He had cleared the paperwork.

My hands stayed rock steady. I pulled my pack-issued record drive from my pocket, lined up the camera lens, and photographed every single page, focusing on the timestamps and the matching order numbers.

I slipped the tiny drive into the hidden inner pocket of my ceremonial cloak. My fingers brushed the dried, pressed wildflowers kept inside the silk lining—the ones I had gathered from my mother’s sacred burial grove.

*Evidence,* Selene growled in the back of my mind.

*Not yet,* I told her. *We need Harriet.* Elder Harriet Cole was the only elder who had served my mother’s family. She would know how to take this to the Lycan Council.

I never got the chance to reach Harriet's cottage.

At dawn, the iron tribunal bells clanged three times from the courtyard.

When I entered the council chamber, the pack elders were already seated around the long mahogany table. Grayson stood at the front in his dress uniform, his face carved into grim, practiced sorrow. Chelsea sat in the front row of the gallery, wrapped in a woolen shawl, dabbing at her dry eyes.

"Bring forward the Luna," Grayson said.

His Beta tossed a thick folder onto the center of the table. The papers fanned out. My stomach tightened.

It was a supply manifest for Batch 409-B. But Chelsea’s name was gone. In its place, scrawled in black ink across the authorization line, was my signature. A crude, hurried forgery, but enough to damn me in front of six old wolves who had never liked an Ashvale bride.

"Luna Sylvia authorized the contaminated shipment three weeks ago," Grayson announced, his voice echoing off the stone walls. "The nursery healer confirmed the wolfsbane dust came from these boards. Three pups are still on oxygen."

Murmurs of shock and disgust rippled through the elders. Harriet Cole looked up at me, her brow furrowed in horror.

"I didn't sign that," I said, stepping forward. My voice was clear. "Those logs are altered. The original purchase order was routed through—"

**"Silence, Sylvia."**

Grayson spoke using the Alpha tone.

The command hit my chest like a lead sledgehammer, driven straight through our mate bond. The biological force slammed into my throat. The words choked off, my vocal cords locking tight against my will. My knees buckled, but I forced my legs to stay straight, my jaw clamped shut so hard my molars ached.

Inside me, Selene went wild, throwing her moon-white weight against the invisible cage of his command, her claws tearing at the psychic leash.

"Until a full inquiry can be held," Grayson said coldly, turning his back on me to face the elders, "I move to strip Sylvia of all Luna authority and confine her to pack grounds."

"Agreed," the Head Elder intoned, striking the table with his mallet.

I stood paralyzed, the Alpha tone still holding my throat in an iron vise. I dug my thumbnail into my wrist, breaking the skin, letting the physical pain anchor me against the suffocating hum of his bond.

Then I looked at Grayson.

He wasn't meeting anyone's eyes. His right hand was resting on the dark mahogany, pressed dead flat, palm-down, leaning his entire weight into the wood to keep his fingers from shaking.

It was his tell. The exact gesture he made every time he told an outright lie.

Grayson turned his head, his cold gray eyes meeting mine, and raised two fingers to summon his enforcers.
