Chapter 1 of After My Alpha Rejected Me, His Wolf Collapsed

The bond broke at 11:47 on a Thursday night — not with a snap, but with a slow, sickening drain, like blood leaving a wound too wide to close.

I felt it through the mind-link first. Not his voice. His choice.

I was already on my knees in the mud when it happened, my hands pressed against Edric Holmes's chest, trying to slow the bleeding where a silver shard had punched clean through his ribs. Beside me, his mate Lira lay half-buried in wolfsbane-fouled rock, her breathing shallow and wet. The ridge had come down fast — one moment a routine pack run, the next a cascade of silver-laced stone that swallowed them both before anyone could pull them clear.

I had one vial left. The only formula in Ironcrest that could counter wolfsbane and silver contamination together. I'd formulated it myself over three years, and there was exactly one dose prepared because the ingredients were rare and I hadn't needed it yet.

I needed it now.

*Cayson.* I pushed the mind-link open as wide as it would go. *The north ridge collapsed. Your parents are buried. Silver shards, wolfsbane in the wounds. I need Torren's extraction team and the antidote vial from the locked cabinet — the green-sealed one, top shelf. They have less than an hour. Send them now.*

I waited.

Around me, Torren Vale and six warriors stood with ropes and extraction braces already in hand, their boots sinking into the same mud I was kneeling in. Torren's jaw was set hard. He'd been ready to move the moment the ridge fell.

The pack mind-link went dark.

Not quiet. Dark. The way a room feels when someone locks the door from the outside.

Torren looked at me. I looked at him. Neither of us spoke because we both understood exactly what had just happened. Pack law was absolute: without Alpha command or an open link confirming authorization, the Gamma could not deploy. Torren's hands tightened on the rope he was holding until his knuckles went pale, and he did not move, because he was a good soldier, and good soldiers obey.

I pressed harder on Edric's chest and felt the silver working deeper into the tissue beneath my palms.

An hour later, I felt their wolves go silent. It moved through what remained of the mate bond like a stone dropped into cold water — one ripple, then nothing. Just a hollow where two living presences used to be.

I stayed kneeling between their bodies until dawn.

---

Cayson arrived at first light, when the wolfsbane had already done what wolfsbane does to exposed flesh. The bodies were beyond easy recognition. I watched his face as he surveyed the scene — the quick calculation behind his eyes, the way his shoulders settled once he confirmed no one here could immediately contradict him.

"Unmarked rogues," he announced, loud enough for every elder and warrior present to hear. "Border incursion. We'll catalogue them as unidentified remains." He paused. "They'll go to the apprentice Healers for silver-wound dissection practice."

No moonlit burial. No rites. His own parents, handed to Iyla Tucker's apprenticeship like training material.

He turned to me. The pack watched him turn to me.

"Luna. Confirm the identification."

Every face in that clearing was waiting. Torren's eyes found mine for one second — raw, desperate, asking me something I couldn't answer yet.

My voice came out steady. Clinical. The voice I use when I'm telling someone their wound is worse than they think.

"Yes, Alpha."

Cayson believed the matter was buried. I let him.

---

I invoked the Luna Accord before the elders had dispersed.

I didn't raise my voice. I didn't need to. I simply spoke the invocation, and pack law did the rest — once called, a formal assembly cannot be dismissed without the Alpha forfeiting the Moon Goddess's blessing over his claim. Every ranked member, every warrior who had stood helpless on that ridge, stopped walking and turned.

Cayson's jaw went tight when I faced him.

"Speak the rejection vow," I said. "In full. Before witnesses."

"Seraphina—"

"In full, Cayson. Or step down."

He spoke. He had no other option. His voice was controlled, but I heard the edge underneath it — the first real crack in ten years of performed authority.

*I, Cayson Holmes, Alpha of Ironcrest Pack, reject you, Seraphina Wells, Luna of Ironcrest Pack, as my mate.*

The mark on my neck went cold mid-sentence. Then it went empty. Like a door closing on a room that had already been abandoned for years.

The pain was there — three breaths of it, sharp and bone-deep, the bond fraying in real time through my chest. I let it move through me without touching my face. Then it passed, and what replaced it was something I hadn't felt in a very long time.

Room.

I nodded once and walked back to the Healer's den.

---

That night I removed every stabilizing tonic I had ever brewed for Cayson's failing wolf — every vial, every measured dose, a decade of quiet labor — and locked them in a case beside my private ledger. I didn't pour them out. Waste is imprecise.

I simply stopped.

Then I sat at my workbench and began extracting antidote samples from the wolfsbane residue I'd collected at the ridge site, working in the particular silence of someone who has finally decided what the evidence is for.

Outside, I could already hear the pack whispering.

I sealed the first sample vial and labeled it in Healer's shorthand, and set it beside the ledger where I had documented every antidote tithe Cayson had skimmed, every border right he had sold to Ashthorn Pack — the same pack whose rogue buyers had purchased the territory maps that brought that ridge down.

The case clicked shut under my hands.
