Chapter 1 of After My Alpha Rejected Me for His Mistress

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night.

I know the exact minute because I was staring at the clock on the banquet hall's north wall when Kingston said my name. Not the way he used to say it in the early days—soft, like it meant something. This was formal. Loud. The kind of voice that carries to three hundred wolves.

"Natalie Edwards."

I'd been standing at the hall's edge for over an hour. The Winter Solstice Banquet was in full swing—candles everywhere, long tables draped in white, the smell of roasted meat and pine. The Luna's ceremonial seat beside Kingston sat empty. It had been empty at every pack dinner for two years. I stopped asking why.

When he called my name, the room went quiet. Not the comfortable kind. The kind where everyone knows something bad is coming and they're glad it's not happening to them.

I walked forward. My boots made no sound on the stone floor. Every eye followed me, but no one met my gaze. I stopped three feet from the high table. Kingston stood. He looked good—he always looked good. Dark hair, sharp jaw, the kind of presence that made rooms rearrange themselves around him. His scent hit me even from that distance: black cedar and winter rain. My wolf stirred inside me, sluggish and trapped, the way she'd been since I was a child.

He didn't smile. He didn't frown. His face was blank, like I was a pack tribunal case he had to get through before dessert.

"I, Kingston, Alpha of Silverfang, reject you, Natalie Edwards, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck went cold first. Not painful—just cold, like someone pressed ice directly against the scar. Then it spread. My knees buckled. I locked them. The edges of my vision went white and grainy. Inside my chest, my wolf screamed. Not a howl. A scream. High and desperate and completely silent to everyone but me.

The bond didn't snap. It hollowed. Like a door closing in an empty room, and you're on the wrong side, and there's no handle.

I stayed on my feet.

Kingston turned to his left. Anais stepped forward from where she'd been sitting in the seat that should've been mine. She wore a pale blue dress. Her hair was pinned up with the silver clasp I'd worn at our mating ceremony five years ago. She smiled—small, demure, perfect.

"I name Anais Perry as my chosen Luna," Kingston said.

The room exhaled. A few wolves clapped. Most didn't. Anais moved to stand beside Kingston. She didn't look at me. No one did.

I turned and walked out. The double doors closed behind me with a soft, final sound.

---

The room they gave me after Anais took the Luna's quarters was small. One window. A bed, a desk, a chair. It was fine. I didn't need much.

I sat on the floor with my back against the bed frame. The tremors started about thirty seconds after I locked the door. My hands shook. My ribs felt like they were pulling apart from the inside. The cold from the mark spread down my spine, into my shoulders, my arms. My wolf was still screaming. She hadn't stopped. She couldn't surface—she'd been dormant since I was six—but she could scream, and she did, over and over, a sound that rattled through my skull and made my teeth ache.

I pressed my palm flat against the floor. The wood was cool. Solid. I focused on that.

I didn't cry.

After a while—maybe ten minutes, maybe an hour—I stood. My legs held. I opened the nightstand drawer and pulled out a small notebook. The pages were covered in my handwriting. Notes. Dates. Exact phrases.

I'd been keeping it for ten days.

---

Ten days ago, I was walking past Kingston's office. Late. Most of the pack house was asleep. I wasn't heading there on purpose—I'd just finished a perimeter check and was cutting through the main corridor to get back to my room.

I heard his voice through the door.

Not a meeting. Not pack business. He was talking to someone, but the tone was wrong. Too casual. Too rehearsed.

I stopped.

"I, Kingston, Alpha of Silverfang, reject you, Natalie Edwards, as my mate and Luna."

He said it slowly. Carefully. Like he was testing the weight of each word.

Anais's voice came next. "Slower on the second beat. 'As my mate.' It sounds more final that way."

Kingston repeated it. Adjusted the emphasis. Better.

"And the ward transfer?" Anais asked.

"Once the bond's severed, the ward becomes unclaimed pack property," Kingston said. "We reclassify it under pack law. You're marked as Luna within seventy-two hours. The anchor transfers to you before she can refuse."

"She won't see it coming," Anais said.

Kingston laughed. Just once. Brief. "No. She won't."

I stood in the corridor with my hand pressed against the wall. My heart was loud in my ears. My wolf stirred—barely, sluggishly—but she stirred.

I didn't knock. I didn't confront them. I walked away.

I went back to my room, pulled out a notebook, and wrote down everything I'd heard. Every word. Every pause. The timeline. The legal language. The plan.

Then I started thinking about pack law.

---

Now, sitting on the floor with the rejection scar cold and hollow on my neck, I opened the notebook again. My handwriting was steady. Clear.

Kingston thought he was stealing my power. He thought the rejection was the end of me.

He was wrong.

I had ten days before the tribunal. I was going to use every single one.
