Chapter 1 of After My Alpha Rejected Me and Killed Our Pup

I smelled her before I saw anything.

The door to the Alpha suite swung open under my hand, and Carly's scent hit me like a wall—sweet vanilla layered thick over Maverick's cedar, saturated into the sheets, the pillows, the air itself. Not a trace. Not a mistake. Hours of intimacy, unmistakable and deliberate.

My hand pressed flat against my belly. Five months. The pup kicked against my palm, oblivious.

I stood in the doorway and made myself look. The bed was unmade, blankets twisted, his shirt on the floor next to something lace and red that wasn't mine. I counted the details the way I used to count supply inventories: one shirt, two pillows with her scent, three years of standing beside him while he looked past me.

My wolf gave me nothing. She'd been silent my whole life, and she stayed silent now.

I walked to the sitting room and sat down to wait.

Maverick came back an hour later, smelling like a shower that hadn't quite erased the evidence. He stopped when he saw me in the chair by the window, my hands folded over the pup.

"Lily." His voice was careful. "You're supposed to be resting."

"I came home early." I kept my tone even. "The healer cleared me for light activity."

He crossed to the bar cart and poured himself a drink. His back was to me. "Good. That's good."

"Maverick."

He turned.

I met his eyes. "Her scent is on our bed."

Something flickered across his face—not shame, not panic. Calculation. He set the glass down and straightened, and when he spoke again his voice dropped into the Alpha tone, the command frequency that made pack members bare their necks without thinking.

"You will drop this accusation." The words hit my chest like a physical weight, my body bowing toward obedience before my mind could catch up. "You will not speak of it again. For the sake of the pup, Lily. Do you understand?"

My throat closed. My wolf—always silent—gave me nothing to push back with. The command settled into my bones, and I felt my lips press together, my head dip in something that wasn't quite a nod but wasn't refusal either.

"Good." He picked up his glass again. "I have a pack dinner. Don't wait up."

He left.

I sat in the chair while his scent and hers still hung in the air, my hand on the pup's kicks, and said nothing at all.

The cramping started two days later.

I was in the Luna's office reviewing border patrol rotations when the first wave hit—sharp, low, wrong. I pressed my hand to my belly and felt the pup shift restlessly. By the time I made it to the healer's room, I was bleeding.

The healer, Maren, got me onto a cot and called for assistance. The cramping worsened. I mind-linked Maverick with a single word: *Healer's room. Now.*

His response came back flat and brief: *In a meeting. Keep me updated.*

I closed my eyes and tried to breathe through the pain.

Victoria arrived before her son did.

The former Luna swept into the healer's room with two attending pack members trailing behind her, her gaze landing on me with the kind of clinical assessment she usually reserved for weak stock. She didn't ask how I was. She looked at Maren instead.

"How serious?"

Maren hesitated. "The bleeding is significant. I'm monitoring—"

"A strong Luna wouldn't require this level of care." Victoria's voice carried to every corner of the room. "Perhaps Lily's body was never built to carry an Alpha's bloodline. A wolfless she-wolf attempting to bear a dominant pup—it's not surprising there are complications."

I turned my head on the pillow and looked at her. She met my gaze without flinching, utterly certain she was stating a fact.

I said nothing. I filed her words away with the same precision I filed everything else, my hand steady on the edge of the cot even as another cramp tore through me.

Maren's hands were gentle as she adjusted the IV line. Victoria left after another pointed comment about rest and proper Luna conduct. The attending pack members followed.

I mind-linked Maverick again. *Complications. Healer says it's serious.*

His reply came back after a long pause: *Rest. I'll check in later.*

I stared at the ceiling and counted the cracks in the plaster.

The seizure hit me in the pack house hallway three days later.

I'd been walking back from the archives—slowly, carefully, one hand on the wall—when my body simply gave out. Vision whited. Pain detonated low in my belly, and I felt something tear inside me, something vital and irreversible.

I collapsed against the wall and mind-linked Maverick with everything I had left.

No words. Just raw, animal terror flooding the connection—*help me, please, something's wrong, the pup, please*—every barrier I'd ever built stripped away in the desperation of a body failing and a mother begging.

I felt the link open. Felt him receive it.

And then I felt him sever it.

Clean. Deliberate. Like a door closing from the other side.

The bond went dead.

I was alone on the pack house floor, bleeding onto the stone, my hand pressed to my belly where the pup had gone terrifyingly still. I tried to call out, but my voice wouldn't come. Pack members passed at the far end of the corridor—I saw their shadows, heard their footsteps—but no one approached.

I lay there and felt my body hemorrhage, and the only sound in my head was silence.
