Chapter 1 of After My Alpha Left Me for His Mistress

The bond broke at 10:14 PM beneath the harvest moon.

I felt it the second Adam opened his mouth on the ceremonial platform. The mark on my neck—the one I'd worn for seven years like a brand, like a promise—went cold first. Not numb. Cold. Like someone had pressed ice directly against the scar tissue where his canines had once pierced my skin.

Then it went hollow.

"I, Adam Pierce, Alpha of Ironveil, reject you, Chloe Morgan, as my mate and Luna."

His voice carried across the clearing. Three hundred wolves stood witness. The words hit me before the pain did—formal, final, spoken in the old tongue that made rejection binding. Irreversible.

The pain came next.

It wasn't like a wound. It was like something living inside me was being ripped out by the roots. My wolf—silent for so long I'd almost forgotten her voice—unleashed a howl inside my skull that made my vision white out at the edges. My knees buckled. I hit the ground hard, palms scraping against stone, and the world tilted sideways.

Around me, no one moved.

Mae stood beside Adam on the platform, her hand resting lightly on his arm. She was smiling. Not broadly—just a small, satisfied curve of her lips as she watched me collapse. Her scent was all over him. Honey and amber, layered thick enough that I could smell it from here, drowning out the faint trace of what used to be ours.

The ceremony continued.

Someone was speaking—the pack elder, maybe, or Adam's Beta. I couldn't hear the words over the roaring in my ears. My wolf was thrashing now, slamming against the inside of my ribs like she was trying to claw her way out. For the first time in years, she wasn't whimpering. She was furious.

*Get up,* she snarled. *Get up. He doesn't get to leave you on the ground.*

My hands were shaking. The mark on my neck felt like an open wound now, raw and exposed, even though the skin was still intact. I could feel the bond unraveling—not all at once, but strand by strand, each one snapping with a sharp, sickening finality.

I forced myself to breathe.

Then I stood.

It took everything I had. My legs felt like they were made of water, and the pain was still there, a deep ache radiating out from my chest like I'd been hollowed out. But I locked my jaw, straightened my spine, and walked.

Not toward Adam. Away from him.

I didn't look back. I didn't let myself stumble. I walked off the ceremonial ground step by step, my wolf still snarling in my head, and no one tried to stop me. No one even looked.

By the time I reached the edge of the clearing, my vision had cleared enough to see the path ahead. The pack house loomed in the distance, its windows glowing warm against the dark. I kept walking.

Behind me, I heard Mae laugh.

---

I made it as far as the corridor outside my quarters before my legs gave out again.

I caught myself against the wall, one hand pressed flat against the cold stone, and tried to breathe through the nausea rolling through me in waves. The mark on my neck throbbed with every heartbeat. Empty. Hollow. Like a door slamming shut in an abandoned room.

Footsteps echoed down the hall.

I looked up and saw Garrett—Adam's Beta—coming toward me. His expression was carefully neutral, the way it always was when he had to deliver bad news on Adam's behalf.

"Chloe," he said quietly. "You should go inside."

I didn't move.

He stopped a few feet away, hands loose at his sides. Non-threatening. "The Alpha has made his decision. It's done. You need to accept it and move on."

"Move on," I repeated. My voice came out flat. Hollow, like the mark.

Garrett's jaw tightened. "He's given you until morning to clear out your things. After that, you're no longer welcome in the pack house."

I stared at him.

Seven years. Seven years I'd stood beside Adam, endured his coldness, his cruelty, the way he looked through me like I was furniture. Seven years I'd kept my head down and my mouth shut and told myself it would get better.

And now I had until morning.

"Understood," I said.

Garrett nodded once, then turned and walked away.

I pushed open the door to my quarters and stepped inside. The room was exactly as I'd left it—bed neatly made, Elijah's things stacked carefully on the desk by the window. His journal. The wooden wolf figurine he'd carved when he was twelve. The memorial wreath I'd woven for our mother's grave.

I crossed to the desk and picked up the journal, running my fingers over the worn leather cover.

Then I heard the crash.

I spun around.

Mae stood in the doorway in wolf form—sleek and golden, her eyes gleaming with malice. She had Elijah's wreath in her jaws. As I watched, she shook it violently, tearing the dried flowers apart, then dropped it on the floor and lifted her leg.

Something inside me snapped.

I didn't think. I lunged for the desk, grabbed the silver letter opener, and threw myself at her.

The blade caught her across the muzzle. Silver burned through fur and flesh, and Mae's wolf shrieked—a high, piercing sound that echoed off the walls. She shifted back mid-scream, blood pouring from the gash across her face, and stumbled backward into the hall.

"You bitch!" she screamed. "You—"

Adam appeared in the doorway.

He didn't look at the shredded wreath. He didn't look at Mae's bleeding face. He looked at me—at the letter opener still clutched in my hand—and his expression went cold.

"You attacked her," he said.

I opened my mouth to answer, but he moved faster.

His hand closed around my throat. He lifted me off my feet and slammed me into the wall so hard I felt something crack. Pain exploded through my ribs. I couldn't breathe.

"Garrett!" Adam's voice was distant, muffled. "Get her out of here."

Hands grabbed me. Dragged me. The world blurred.

When I came back to myself, I was face-down in the mud beyond the pack border, rain soaking through my clothes, my ribs screaming with every breath.

And I was alone.
