Chapter 1 of After My Alpha Chose His Luna Over Me

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night, under a full moon I had been counting down to for weeks.

I stood three rows back in the ceremony hall, surrounded by three hundred wolves whose scent pressed against my skin like humidity. Nicolas was on the platform. The torchlight made his face look carved from something harder than bone. He was looking directly at me when he spoke.

"I, Nicolas, Alpha of Ironridge Pack, reject you, Adeline, as my mate."

The mark on my neck went cold first. Not painful—just cold, like someone had pressed an ice cube to the skin and then removed it and left the absence behind. Then it went hollow. The warmth that had lived there for five years, the quiet hum I had felt every time Nicolas was near, collapsed inward into nothing. My wolf screamed. The sound stayed inside my skull, a howl with nowhere to go, reverberating through my bones until my teeth ached. My knees tried to buckle. I locked them.

The hall was silent. Three hundred wolves watched me. I could feel their eyes like hands.

I pressed two fingers to the dead mark. The skin was still there. The scar tissue from where the bond had set was still raised under my fingertips. But the connection underneath it was gone. It felt like touching a door that had been closed in an empty room.

I turned and walked. My spine stayed straight because I had been practicing that walk my entire life. One foot, then the other. The aisle stretched longer than it had any right to, but I made it to the corridor outside without stumbling. Behind me, Nicolas's voice rose again, warm now, welcoming. "I am honored to present Eva, daughter of the eastern packs, who brings with her the goodwill of the Lycan King's inner court."

The scent hit me before I cleared the doorway. Eva's scent—fresh roses and something sharper, like citrus—threaded now with Nicolas's pine and iron. Marked. The scent flooded the hall deliberately, released in a wave that followed me into the corridor. I did not look back. I knew what she was doing. She wanted the flinch.

I kept walking.

A small hand touched my elbow. I turned. Dara stood there, an Omega girl maybe sixteen, holding a tin cup of water. Her eyes were wide and frightened, but she held the cup steady. "Miss Adeline," she whispered. "You should drink something."

I took the cup. My hands were shaking. I drank half of it before I realized I was thirsty.

"Thank you," I said.

Eva's shoulder hit Dara's on the way past, hard enough to make the girl stumble. Eva did not apologize. She paused in the corridor, her gaze sliding over me like she was cataloging damage. Her lips curved. She inhaled slowly, deliberately, and I knew she was scenting for the bond-break on me—the sour edge that clung to a rejected mate's skin for days. I kept my face blank. She wanted a reaction. I gave her nothing.

She walked back into the hall. The door swung shut behind her.

Dara was still standing beside me, clutching the empty cup. "Are you—" she started.

"I'm fine," I said. My voice came out steady. I was surprised by that. "Go back inside. You'll be missed."

She hesitated, then nodded and slipped away. I stood alone in the corridor for thirty seconds, listening to the muffled sounds of the ceremony resuming inside—cheers, the ceremonial howl that greeted a new Luna. Then I walked out of the pack house entirely.

The bond-withdrawal hit me on the third night.

I had made it back to the cabin on Ironridge's edge, the one Silas had built when he took me in as a pup. He was gone now—dead two winters past—but the cabin still smelled like woodsmoke and the herbs he used to dry by the window. I lay on the narrow bed and felt my body try to tear itself apart from the inside.

Nausea first. Then a radiating ache from the dead mark that spread down my shoulder and into my ribs, like someone had hooked a line through the scar tissue and was pulling. My wolf was still screaming. She had not stopped. The sound was quieter now, a constant low whine that made it impossible to think clearly. I did not sleep.

On the third night, shaking but upright, I opened the pack law texts.

I had memorized most of them during the five years I spent making myself useful to Nicolas. Pack structure, tribunal procedures, territorial boundary agreements. I had organized his correspondence, drafted his rulings, smoothed the disputes he was too proud to resolve diplomatically. I knew the law better than he did.

I found the provision I needed on page forty-seven: the formal right to tribunal defense. Any Alpha seeking to demote or banish a pack member must justify the action before witnesses, including any visiting diplomatic delegations present within pack territory at the time of accusation. The accused has the right to invoke tribunal and present a defense.

I read it three times to make sure. Then I pulled out a clean sheet of paper and began to write.

The invocation had to be in precise legal language. I wrote it by hand, my fingers cramping around the pen, the nausea rising in waves I had to breathe through. I cited the provision. I invoked my right. I requested a tribunal date within seven days, as the law allowed. I signed my name at the bottom.

At dawn, I walked to the pack house and left the letter with the night sentry. He took it without looking at me. I walked back to the cabin and waited.

Nicolas called the tribunal two days later.

I heard about it from the Delta warrior who knocked on my door that afternoon. She was young, maybe twenty, with a scar across her jaw and eyes that looked older than the rest of her. She handed me a folded notice without preamble.

"He's calling it for next week," she said. "He thinks you'll fold."

I opened the notice. The tribunal was scheduled for six days from now. Public assembly required. Witnesses permitted.

"He's wrong," I said.

She looked at me for a long moment. Then she nodded. "I have testimony," she said quietly. "If you want it. About Eva. About what she's done since she got here."

I looked up sharply. "Why?"

"Because someone should," she said. She turned to leave, then paused. "There's a delegation coming. From the Lycan King's court. Routine territorial observation. They'll be here before the tribunal."

She left before I could ask anything else.

I stood in the doorway holding the notice, feeling my wolf stir for the first time since the rejection. Not a scream this time. Something else. Something that felt like teeth.
