Chapter 1 of After My Alpha Betrayed Our Bond

The full moon hung low over Silverfang's ancestral grounds, so close I could almost taste its silver on my tongue.

I stood on the ceremonial platform in a white gown my mother had worn twenty-six years ago. Three hundred wolves filled the clearing below me, and behind them, every allied Alpha on the East Coast sat in the carved stone chairs my ancestors had built for nights exactly like this one. I was Elodie Willis, only daughter of Alpha Gerald, heir to Silverfang. And tonight the Moon Goddess would finally tie me to the wolf she had chosen for me before I could walk.

Dominic West.

My bond-scent for him rolled through me the moment he stepped out of the tree line — pine and winter jasmine, sharp and cold and beautiful. My wolf, Ivy, whined softly inside my skull, tail thumping. *He's here. He's here.*

I smiled at him. I had been smiling at him for four years.

He walked up the platform steps in a black suit. His face was calm. Too calm. In the flickering torchlight his eyes met mine, and for one strange heartbeat, I felt like a stranger was looking back at me.

"Dom?" I whispered. My hand lifted a little between us.

He did not take it.

He turned to face the crowd instead. His voice was flat and clean, like he had rehearsed the words in front of a mirror.

"I, Dominic West, alpha heir of the Ironridge Pack, reject you, Elodie Willis, daughter of Alpha Gerald of the Silverfang Pack, as my mate."

The world stopped.

Then the bond snapped.

It was not metaphor. It was not heartbreak. It was a strand of something living being ripped out through my ribs. My knees hit the wooden platform before I knew I was falling. My mouth opened but no sound came out. Inside me, Ivy screamed a howl that only I could hear, high and broken and animal.

Somewhere far away, I heard a woman gasp. Then another. Then the whole clearing seemed to inhale at once.

Dominic did not look at me. He walked down the platform steps. He walked past my father, past his own Beta, past the priests who had come to bless us. He walked into the dark.

I stayed on my knees a second longer, both hands pressed flat against the boards, and the only thing I could feel was the empty space on the left side of my neck where his teeth should have been.

"Elodie!" My father's voice, ragged. "Elodie, sweetheart—"

I shoved to my feet. My legs did not belong to me. Neither did my lungs. I stumbled off the back of the platform, tore through a line of stunned Deltas, and hit the tree line running.

I ran until the white dress caught on branches and ripped. I ran until the moon was only pieces of light through pine needles. Somewhere along the way my body tried to shift and could not commit — fur crawled up my arms and receded, claws pushed through my fingertips and pulled back — because a wolf whose bond had just been severed did not know what she was anymore.

I collapsed against a pine.

*Breathe,* Ivy whispered, and even her voice was hoarse. *Elodie, breathe.*

I could not. Every inhale dragged the bond-wound wider. I pressed my palm to the bare curve of my throat, right where a mate's mark should have sealed me, and felt only skin and sweat and the pulse of a heart that refused to stop even though I wanted it to.

I do not know how long I stayed there. I know the moon moved. I know my dress was black with dirt by the time I made it back to the pack house through the servants' door, avoiding every voice that called my name.

In the medicine cabinet behind my mother's old vanity, I found the bottle. Silver rim, dark green glass. Wolfsbane liquor — the only thing our healers kept locked up that could dull a torn bond. I drank two fingers of it straight. It burned like frostbite going down.

The pain softened to gray.

Gray was better.

I shifted in the courtyard because I could not stand walls anymore. My silver-and-ash wolf tore off into Silverfang land, and I ran her the way you run a horse you do not care about — hard, without mercy, past every marker, past every scent line, until her paws bled and her lungs whistled and somewhere near the eastern border her legs simply stopped working.

They found me at dawn. I remember Arlo's hands on my fur. I remember the sky was pink.

---

I slept for two days.

On the third day, I got out of bed while the healer was in the hall, and my feet — before my mind — walked me down the east wing to the guest suite Dominic used whenever he stayed with us.

It still smelled faintly of him. Pine. Winter jasmine. My stomach turned.

I did not know what I was looking for until I saw the loose board under the rug by the desk. My fingers pried it up like they had done this before. Inside: three leather journals and a black phone I had never seen.

I sat on the floor in my nightgown and read.

I read until the sun crossed the window and set again. I read every tender word he had ever said to me listed as strategy. Every gift catalogued as investment. And near the middle of the second journal, in his neat, controlled handwriting:

*The rogue border patrol — the opportunity presented itself perfectly. She will not question a wolf who has bled for her. Four years, maybe five, and the Willis name is mine to gut from the inside.*

I closed the book.

My hands were not shaking anymore.

Something inside my chest — something that had been screaming since the moment he said my name on that platform — went very, very quiet.

And stayed that way.
