Chapter 4

But now, I could let go of everything.

Therefore, I would never be considered a social climber.

I had no desire to talk, so I directly turned around and walked past Jane and Matthew.

Matthew took the initiative to grab my wrist.

He explained, but with provocative eyes, "Yannick, don't misunderstand us. When the dog I've kept for half a year fell ill in the middle of the night, I was so flustered that I called Jenny and asked her to accompany me to the pet hospital. Unfortunately, Snowie still died, so Jenny came to this cemetery with me today."

I looked at Matthew and found his words funny.

"Why are you telling me all this? Do you want me to prepare a wreath for you and Snowie?"

"Yannick Chambers, is it necessary for you to say such mean words?"

Jane spat with her eyes burning with rage. After all, I had offended the man of her dreams.

In the past, I would have made a big fuss about everything she did and asked her why she left me behind and went to find Matthew last night so eagerly that she was unwilling to fulfill even my mother's last wish.

At this moment, however, I had no interest in getting an explanation from her.

The reason was there was no such need.

From then on, I would have nothing to do with her anymore.

"Of course, it's not necessary. So, please get out of my way."

I turned around and left. Jane was staring after me with a dazed look.

This was the first time I didn't lose my temper with her when she stood on Matthew's side.

Jane took a few steps forward and held my hand to stop me for the first time.

"Why didn't you arrange with me about my work these days but instead asked the assistant to contact me?"

I had blocked Jane for so many days. If she had spared me a little of her concern for Matthew, driven to the hospital to see me, or just given me a call to ask about my situation, she would not have asked such a stupid question.

"I have already resigned. Didn't you see the agency's announcement?"

Jane's face froze. Apparently, she had even paid no attention to this because she had been keeping Matthew company, whose dog had died, these days.

How ridiculous.

In Jane's heart, my mother's last wish and my life couldn't even compare to Matthew's dog.

"Why did you resign? Just because I didn't go to see your mother? Matt's dog got injured so badly that it couldn't afford any more delays. Can't I go to see her at another time?"

Jane didn't care in the slightest and still thought I was being unreasonable until now.

I no longer had the slightest desire to talk to Jane and dodged her hand that was about to touch me.

"Then you can continue to take care of Matthew's dog. We'll have nothing to do with each other from now on."

I didn't want to waste any more time on Jane. I brushed past her when I left resolutely.

However, she grabbed me by my hand abruptly.

"I'll give you a pay raise. I was being careless this time. I'll go to see your mother next time. Will that do?"

Jane still believed I was throwing a tantrum because I was jealous of Matthew.

Honestly, I didn't blame Matthew for Jane's infidelity.

After all, it was Jane's fault for being unfaithful.

Seeing that I remained silent, Jane's tone became colder.

"I've already apologized. What else do you want?"

"I want nothing but a rest. I just felt tired."

"Yannick, can you stop making a fuss out of nothing? You know Matt is suffering from heart disease. Can't you make compromises and treat him better?"

I was amused.

Because of Matthew's heart disease, he could always get Jane away from me with just one phone call.

But what did another man's illness have to do with Jane's relationship with me?

Jane and I had quarreled countless times for Matthew's sake. Now, I was too exhausted to argue with her anymore.

I looked at Jane calmly without saying anything.

Jane froze and fell silent.

I took the opportunity to shake off her hand and walked further away.

Looking at my receding back, Jane felt a sense of loss but did not take it to heart. Instead, she picked up the phone and called her assistant.

"Shawn, contact the best oncologist in the country for consultation in surgery on Yannick's mother."

As soon as she finished speaking, she hung up the phone impatiently.

If her patience with me could last for just one more second, nothing would have happened next.

Chapter 5

I drove away from the cemetery, but before I reached downtown, I received a call from the cemetery administrator.

Someone had gotten his eye on my mother's grave and wanted to move my mother's ashes away.

I was so angry that I felt the blood in me was boiling.

I slammed on the accelerator and sped back to the cemetery.

When I arrived, Matthew had already placed the urn of his dog's ashes in the grave while my mother's had been thrown aside!

"What are you doing?"

I roared furiously, rushed forward, and pushed Matthew to the ground.

Matthew grimaced in pain.

When he saw me trying to stop him, he immediately spat, "Yannick Chambers, are you insane? We are digging this grave, but what does it have to do with you?"

"What does it have to do with me? This is my mother's grave!"

I lost control of my emotions.

Thud!

I punched Matthew in the face.

I exerted a lot of strength.

Matthew staggered several steps back after being thumped by me.

Overwhelmed by fury and blinded by hatred, I grabbed Matthew's collar.

Punch after punch slammed against him hard.

"You're crazy! Yannick Chambers, how dare you beat him!"

As a C-lister, though Matthew looked muscular, he was weak compared to me, who had been slaving for Jane at carrying her heavy equipment and baggage.

Matthew was soon on the verge of unconsciousness under my beating.

Jane had already called the bodyguards to hold me down.

"Ah! Yannick Chambers, you lunatic!"

Jane held Matthew tight with deep sadness as if her father had died.

"Jane Hardy, you'd better put my mother's urn back, or I swear I'll kill you two!"

"Your mother..."

Jane was dumbfounded by my words, at a loss for what to do.

Matthew spat out blood and brought Jane back to her senses.

"Jenny, don't believe him. How many times has he deceived you into seeing him with the excuse that his mother was sick?"

I was burning with rage.

Over the past year, my mother had been so critically ill that the hospital had given me a pile of critical illness notices, but she had been struggling to hold on for the sake of me.

Until her death, she was still waiting for Jane, the future daughter-in-law she considered, to come.

Hearing what Matthew said, the shock in Jane's eyes instantly turned into anger.

"Yannick Chambers, I can't believe you even lied through your teeth that your mother was dead. You bastard!

"She had a rosy good complexion the last time I saw her. How could she possibly die so suddenly!"

I was rendered speechless.

My heart overflowed with grief and rage. I wanted to say something, but the overwhelming bitterness blocked my throat, making me unable to utter a single sound.

It had been ten months since Jane went to see my mother last time.

My mother's good complexion Jane mentioned was because my mother had asked the nurse to put makeup on her for fear that Jane would dislike her ashen face.

My mother had never worn makeup in her life and was not used to it, but she was reluctant to see Jane be frightened by her sickly look.

"I look good with makeup on, don't I?"

My mother asked me with a smile, looking at herself in the mirror.

I tried my best to hold back the tears and nodded. Then, I took Jane to see my mother, but she only stayed for five minutes before she left on the pretext of work.

That night, when my mother was in critical condition, she said she wanted to see Jane one last time.

I called Jane countless times until my phone was about to go out of service. When I finally got through, she said she was too busy and didn't want to be photographed by paparazzi.

My mother died in my arms with regret. At her last gasp, she still told me to stick together with Jane, holding my hand.

But how could I still get along with Jane after all this?

She was so heartless that she even dug up my mother's ashes!

Seeing that I didn't say anything, Jane thought she had exposed my "conspiracy".

She said smugly, "Yannick, as long as you apologize to Matthew, I can get married to you as scheduled next month. We can get the marriage license privately without making our marriage public. Do you understand?"

She gave me a taste of sweetness condescendingly after hurting me.

"Jane Hardy, my apology and marriage to you are only in your dreams!"

My rejection made Jane's tone turn even colder.

"You're just too jealous of Matthew when you see I care about him, aren't you?

"Look at how nasty you are now. You can't compare with Matt at all.

"I'll give you one last chance. Apologize to Matthew immediately!"

Jane threatened me in a patronizing tone.

Matthew stared at me intently with a triumphant cold smile on his face.

Looking at them, I felt my heart bleeding.

"Do you still refuse to apologize so obstinately?"

Jane questioned while looking at me coldly before she made a call again. "Shawn, cancel the consultation with the oncologist immediately. There is no need to ask him to perform surgery on Yannick Chambers' mother!"

Shawn's hesitant voice came from the other end of the line.

"Miss Hardy, I'm sorry... But Mr. Yannick Chambers' mother passed away a few days ago, on the night your speeding was captured on film by the paparazzi.

"In addition, the grave you just asked me to inquire about was bought by Mr. Yannick Chambers. His mother is buried there."
