Chapter 1

I was falsely accused of murder following the death of my elder sister, Nicole Johnson, who committed suicide.

My beloved younger brother, Isaac Johnson, who had always cared about me, gouged out my left eye. Adding to the pain, my fiancé, Rhett Barone, sent me to prison.

After a decade behind bars, I finally regained my freedom.

Nicole came to apologize to me with Rhett.

I smiled and forgave them, then pleaded for mercy from them.

As I received the devastating news that my time was limited to a mere three months, Isaac and Rhett approached me with tear-filled eyes.

But I didn't want anyone anymore.

I relied on the support of trees and guided myself by touching the wall as I walked out of the prison.

Throughout the year, my left eye remained vacant, partially obscured by a thin layer of gauze, while my right eye could only perceive faint remnants of images.

While walking cautiously, I suddenly found myself blocked by a tall shadow.

I heard the person ask, "Abigail, what's the act this time?"

In an instant, my body shook violently as if it were a reflex.

The person's voice was clear and pleasant, yet it sent shivers down my spine.

The voice belonged to my younger brother, Isaac, the one who had gouged out my left eye.

Isaac let out a chilling chuckle as he curiously lifted the gauze covering my left eye and blew air into the empty socket.

"I did so well back then. I gouged it so cleanly," he said proudly.

Protecting my remaining right eye, I pressed myself against the wall, yearning to meld into its surface.

Don't touch me! Don't gouge my eyes out!

With a contemptuous sneer, he forcefully dragged me into the car.

"Why are you shaking? Who are you pretending to be pitiful for? Just live in my house from now on. I will take care of you."

Take care of me? I bit my lip until it bled, still feeling the pain of having my eyeball forcibly gouged out.

Ten years ago, he gouged out my left eye with a pencil in prison in the name of taking care of me.

At that time, he threw my eyeball into the gutter in disgust, muttering, "It stinks. How can someone like you be my sister?"

Overwhelmed by the pain, I clawed at the cracks in the floor until I lost consciousness. Unfortunately, no one came to my rescue.

When I woke up again, I found that my initial five-year sentence had inexplicably been extended to ten years.

I couldn't bear his care any longer.

As soon as Isaac parked the car, I hastily pushed the door open to escape. However, I fell flat on my face, and my arms were bleeding from the friction.

"What's the rush? You're still as troublesome as ever."

Isaac's tone carried a mixture of disdain and a hint of doting, reminiscent of the helpless tone he used to have when I playfully snatched his snacks as children.

My heart ached as if it were empty. However, I quickly suppressed the pain out of habit.

Isaac took me to his shared apartment.

The air hung heavy with a sour odor. The dusty floor, when stepped upon, left behind distinct footprints.

It had been ten years, and he must have squandered all of our parents' inheritance.

My hand touched a sock, and I immediately straightened up stiffly.

During the initial three years of my imprisonment, I had smelly socks stuffed into my mouth every day. Those people took pleasure in seeing tears and mucus all over my face.

At first, I would resist and vomit, but as time wore on, I grew numb, deprived of the strength to vomit.

After all, each time I vomited, I would have to starve for three days, and in the end, I would have to lie on the floor like a dog and lick the smelly oatmeal.

Isaac placed a plate of spaghetti in front of me, and I instinctively placed my hands on my legs, waiting for his order.

I didn't know what had provoked his anger, but Isaac abruptly flung the plate of spaghetti onto the floor.

"You hate me, don't you? Then kneel down on the floor and finish all the spaghetti," he commanded.

Quivering with fear, I didn't hesitate for a moment. I crawled on the floor and began eating the scattered spaghetti.

I must be obedient! Only by being obedient could I avoid being beaten and starving.

I must consume every bit of the spaghetti. Only by meeting all of his demands would he let me go and not gouge out my eyes!

Taking a breath, he lifted me off the ground and tossed me onto the sofa. He asked harshly, "Abigail, how much longer will you continue this charade? I just gouged out one of your eyes. Why do you still think about it? Talk to me."

I wiped the food scraps from the corners of my mouth and replied tremblingly, "I don't think about it anymore. I've gotten over it."

He tightly clenched my wrist, his breathing becoming rapid as if he was struggling to contain his anger.

How strange! I spoke as he wished, but why was he still angry?

The doorbell suddenly rang, jolting Isaac. He nervously pushed me into the room.

"Don't make a sound! Otherwise, I won't let you go!" he warned.

His voice carried a mix of anxiety and delight.

"Nicole, why are you here?"

A jolt of disbelief surged through me, rendering my body rigid as if struck by lightning.

Nicole? Didn't she die a long time ago?

"We didn't see Abigail. Did you hide her?" came a young and gentle female voice.

Isaac said nonchalantly, "Why would I? She is so selfish and vicious. She probably went out to have lavish meals and drinks!"

Nicole sighed. "I should have visited her in prison sooner."

"Is she the kind of person who can make herself suffer? She must have enjoyed herself in prison! You're pregnant and need to take care of yourself. We don't need to worry about her."

A cold male voice sounded. "Nicole, Abigail is selfish, and she deserves it. Our priority is to protect our child. Leave Isaac and me to handle finding her."

My fiancé, Rhett, was here, too? The memory of his last words to me in court echoed in my mind. "You deserve it," he said.

I understood now. Despite Nicole being alive and well, they would send me to prison.

An intense pain gripped my heart, swiftly spreading throughout my body, yet I found myself unable to shed a single tear.

No matter how stupid I was, I could figure it out in ten years.

The moment I confirmed the truth, I let go of my obsession.

Nicole came back from the dead and had a child with my fiancé.

They would be a happy family.

What did that make me?

Chapter 2

After they left, I whispered to Isaac, hands trembling, pleading with him to let me go.

Isaac punched the wall.

"You are already a cripple. Can you stop causing trouble for me? Do you still want to find Rhett and destroy his family?" he spat out.

Rendered speechless, I simply shook my head in response.

I didn't want to look for Rhett at all.

After the Johnson family went bankrupt, my parents entrusted me to Rhett, and he swore that he would make me the happiest woman in the world.

I believed it until when I found the love letters he had written to Nicole.

Each letter ended with the words, "You are my only love."

The words conveyed the pain and helplessness that stemmed from being unable to be with her, and they were infused with overwhelming love.

After the revelation of the love letters, we had our first fight. He kissed me hard on the lips, promising to discard all the love letters and get over Nicole.

The day before our engagement, Nicole committed suicide in the bathtub in our wedding room. Using her favorite lipstick, she left behind a haunting message, saying, "If there is an afterlife, I will never let you go back to Abigail."

The funny thing was, I was accused of abetting murder by my brother and fiancé.

What was even more ridiculous was that I was convicted without any evidence presented to support the charges.

I spent ten years in jail.

All my pride had been shattered, and now I just wanted to stay away from them.

I insisted on leaving, but Isaac locked me in the apartment.

"Will you let go of Rhett? You used to follow him everywhere and couldn't be driven away.

"If it weren't for our parents' last wish, he would have eloped with Nicole long ago.

"If you dare to go out, be prepare to lose your right eye."

With trembling hands, I reluctantly agreed, fully aware that he was capable of doing that, as he had already done it once before.

My head throbbed, feeling as if it were about to explode.

I started to dream all night long. In these nightmares, Rhett made vows, and I was handcuffed and had my eyeball gouged out. I dreamed that blood constantly gushed out from my lower body.

Despair and suffocation enveloped me like a net.

In a daze, I smelled disinfectant.

Everything in my field of vision appeared stark white. Subconsciously, I reached out to touch my right eye.

Thankfully, it was still intact.

I could see my parents for the last time.

"The patient has multiple abrasions on her body, and her weight her weight is below the standard. Are you really her family?" questioned a doctor.

"She did it herself. She always wanted to lose weight before, and now she has got what she wanted."

Isaac's discontented voice echoed from a distance, persistently reaching my ears.

He lifted the curtain and raised an eyebrow proudly at the person behind him.

"I knew she was pretending!"

Rhett appeared, supporting Nicole, whose belly had a slight bulge.

Isaac's body seemed relaxed, but his eyes were glancing at me warily.

They were like warriors waiting for the coming storm, ready for battle.

A chuckle escaped me involuntarily.

It was light, but Rhett caught it.

Disgust flickered across his eyes as he narrowed them and sneered.

"It seems you are getting too comfortable in prison and have forgotten the rules," he remarked.

Nicole bit her lip lightly, tears welling up in her eyes.

"Abigail, are you really going to be so stingy that you won't forgive me?" she asked.

Isaac kicked the end of the bed in annoyance.

"Abigail, don't push it. If Nicole hadn't begged me to bring you to the hospital, you would have died of fever in your room," he asserted.

Why wouldn't they let me go? I had nothing left.

Ignoring the dizziness, I stood up and removed the needle.

Standing before them, I lowered my head and apologized, "I'm sorry. I was wrong.

"I'm sorry, Nicole, I forgive you.

"I'm sorry. Can I leave?"

They looked at me in shock as if they had seen a ghost.

Coming back to their senses, Rhett and Isaac subconsciously wanted to say something, but when they saw Nicole's eyes instantly turn red, they held their tongues.

Nicole shook her head and cried bitterly.

"Abigail, you don't mean it. You must still blame me and refuse to forgive me, right?" she sobbed.

Rhett hugged Nicole gently, directing an icy stare at me.

I looked up, my voice calm as I said, "I don't blame or hate you. It's all my fault."

I was wrong. I was wrong for foolishly falling in love with Rhett. I was even more wrong for being so arrogant and lacking discernment when judging people.

How could I be so confident that my brother and fiancé would believe me?

It took me ten years to get completely sober.

I didn't want family or a lover anymore.

Nicole's tears froze at the corners of her eyes.

Isaac grabbed my collar.

Suddenly, he exclaimed, "Your... your hand!"

His exclamation startled me and made me sober up a little.

Lost in the situation, I failed to notice the blood seeping from the needle mark. It pooled beneath my body.

Chapter 3

After the nurse gave me new injections, she changed the gauze on my left eye.

Rhett stared at my left eye with a complicated expression while Isaac touched his neck and turned away.

"Abigail, we can provide you with an artificial eye for free."

Suddenly, Nicole let out a cry of pain, clutching her stomach in distress.

Rhett and Isaac turned around instantly and surrounded her nervously.

"It's okay. It's the baby kicking. Rhett, this place feels creepy. Let's go back!"

Nicole suddenly realized something and covered her mouth, looking guilty for having said something wrong.

Isaac threw me a dirty look and helped open the door.

"Someone is eager for us to leave! We better stay out of her sight.

"Almost forgot! She only has one eye left now." he mocked and laughed.

I closed my eyes numbly and faced the wall.

Tranquility settled upon the world around me. I had the most peaceful sleep since I was released from prison.

Half slumber, I felt a head rubbing against my chest.

I let out a scream, but it was silenced by a fierce kiss.

It was Rhett!

His face flushed with redness, and the scent of alcohol emanated from his breath.

"You finally came back. Abby, don't leave me again."

My struggle suddenly ceased.

He always addressed me by Abigail.

In order to make him call me Abby, I once prepared a two-hour birthday party for him in a short skirt in the cold wind.

The people around us began to get excited and encourage us. Rhett's ears turned red, and he only said they were nosy.

At that time, a junior who had a crush on him laughed at me, taunting, "I thought Rhett was crazy about you, but he won't even want to call you by your nickname. I can't wait for the day when he abandons you."

That day arrived, and I was completely abandoned by Rhett.

Rhett wanted to take off my clothes, but I clung desperately to the buttons of my clothing, causing my palms to turn red.

He reacted quickly, and we looked at each other in silence in the dark.

"Ungrateful," he snorted and staggered away, his back looking panic-stricken.

I thought he was drunk.

But after closing my eyes, I couldn't fall asleep again.

I couldn't stay in the hospital any longer, so I went to check out.

"Ms. Johnson, there are some abnormal values in your test report. You must check again," the nurse said.

I refused with a smile, knowing that no matter how many times I checked, it would not change the result.

I knew that my life wouldn't be much longer.

As soon as I reached the side of the road, Isaac hurried over, supporting Nicole.

"Abigail, what the hell are you going to do? Can't you save us some trouble?" Isaac scolded.

"Abigail, you still won't forgive me," said Nicole.

The two of them easily put the blame on me.

"Abigail, Rhett came to see you last night, didn't he?"

As Nicole asked, she took a step forward, covering her face and crying.

"He said he felt bad for you and wanted to get back together with you," she sobbed.

I forced a bitter smile. Nicole thought too highly of me.

She grabbed my hand, pleading desperately, while I could hear the whispers of people around us, cursing me as a mistress.

"Abigail, I can give you all the money, but please don't take Rhett away. The child can't grow up without a father."

Isaac carefully supported Nicole and pushed me towards the road hard.

"Why don't you just die, you bitch!" he cursed.

Suddenly, a car lost control and hurtled towards me.

With no time to react, I could only catch a glimpse of Isaac's outstretched hand and Nicole's sinister grin.
