Chapter 1
In my previous life, my older sister, Alyssa Larson, married a butcher, while I married a hoodlum from the village.
Later, the hoodlum struck it rich, buying several buildings in the city, and he let me spend his money as I pleased.
Alyssa couldn't stand the smell of the butcher and refused to share a bed with him. Instead, she fooled around with playboys in the village.
At our mother's urging, I tried to persuade Alyssa to make things work with the butcher.
Seeing me all dressed up and glamorous, Alyssa flew into a rage, and when I turned away to fetch water, she struck the back of my head with a hammer.
When I opened my eyes, we were back to the day the matchmaker came to arrange the marriage.
Alyssa grabbed the matchmaker's hand, insisting on marrying the hoodlum.
My whole family was shocked, and even the matchmaker gasped for air. Only I struggled to hold back my laughter.
Felipe Garner wasn't a late bloomer or a playboy who turned over a new leaf. All his money came from me.
But did Alyssa have what it took to handle the troublemaker?
"Mom, I don't want to marry Terry. I wanna marry Felipe!
"Although he likes to peep at the girls in the outhouse, is it all his fault?"
Alyssa spoke in a righteous tone.
Her words shocked everyone, and the matchmaker gasped for air.
I remained calm and took a sip of water, knowing that Alyssa had also been reborn.
In the previous life, our mother, Hilda Larson, favored Alyssa, wanting her to marry the most prosperous and capable butcher in the village.
She casually pushed me towards Felipe, took the betrothal money given by Felipe's family, and used it to fill Alyssa's dowry.
And my dowry consisted of a few quilts.
She comforted me, "I was afraid that Alyssa would suffer if she married him, so I had to help her.
"Felipe is a kind guy, and you will have a happy life if you marry him."
She was irritated when she heard that Alyssa wanted to marry Felipe.
"Did you eat too much last night and muddle your brain? Have you forgotten that Felipe even touched your Maggie's butts?"
Alyssa laughed like a fool, taking her to the living room.
In the distance, they whispered to each other.
I didn't know what they said, but Hilda was shocked, then confused, and finally accepted it.
Half-believing, she settled the two marriage arrangements.
At night, the sparrows on the old locust tree had fallen asleep, but Hilda's room was still lit.
I pushed the door open, creaking, and Hilda turned her head.
As she saw it was me, the loving smile on her face disappeared, and she turned back.
I advised her to rest early, but she said, "I'm worried about Alyssa. While I'm still able, I should make her a few quilts.
"Alyssa is different from you. She decided to marry Felipe so that you'd have a good life. You should remember her kindness and help her in the future."
I looked at the quilt embroidered with patterns and asked, "What about mine?"
She paused and spoke in a strange tone. "You're going to marry the richest butcher in the village, so why are you still trying to exploit me? Even landlords aren't as greedy as you."
After hearing this, I turned and left.
I didn't tell her that it would rain tonight and that she needed to collect the cotton outside.
The next day, I was awakened by crying in the courtyard.
Hilda wailed, "Oh, Heavens, why are you so blind?
"My dear daughter is getting married, and this cotton is wet and moldy. What am I going to do?"
I chuckled under the covers.
A miserable marriage paired with moldy quilts seemed fitting for Alyssa.
Annoyed by the noise, Alyssa threw off the blanket, pulled on a coat, and came out to grumble.
"Come on! It's just a few quilts.
"If you really care about me, you should give me a pair of bracelets."
Hilda's crying abruptly stopped, but she was not saddened by Alyssa's words.
Instead, it cleared her clouded mind, and she raised her hand to slap herself.
"Why didn't I think of that? You're so smart.
"Yesterday, Terry gave us 3,000 dollars in betrothal gifts, enough for us to buy a pair of fine bracelets!"
I clenched my fists under the covers.
She took my betrothal money and gave me a few worn-out quilts. Now she wanted to buy bracelets for Alyssa.
After dressing up, Alyssa glanced back at me, who was pretending to be asleep. She leaned against the door frame and sneered, "Sleeping like a log. No wonder you're marrying a butcher with bad smells. You two are a perfect match.
"Unlike you, I'm going to marry the richest man."
"Olivia, you're only fit to shovel pig feed with the butcher, envying me for wearing fancy clothes."
With that, she swayed her hips and went to see Felipe.
My bad mood dissipated with her words.
If I remember correctly, Felipe must be in bed with Melanie Powell right now.
Yet Alyssa still wanted to marry him.
In that case, she would have to live with it.
Worse things were yet to be discovered.
Chapter 2
A month later, everyone in the village gathered at our house to feast.
Alyssa suggested that we should hold our weddings together as it would be livelier.
But I knew it was because Felipe didn't have the money to host the banquet. To win his heart, Alyssa shamelessly proposed the idea.
I smiled.
Everyone knew that Terry was the richest man in the whole village and even in the entire town.
In the backyard of his house, there were over a dozen black pigs, all fat and strong. Many bosses from the city were willing to buy them at a high price.
The other families could only hope to have some meat during the holidays.
The Davis family had long achieved the luxury of eating meat every day.
In my previous life, after finishing the heavy farm work, I'd smell the aroma of pork from their house.
How envious I was of Alyssa for marrying Terry. She didn't have to work in the fields and could have meat every day.
Sometimes, Terry would give me a few ribs.
I blushed, and though I hesitated a few times, I reluctantly accepted them.
When taking the pork, I felt the calluses and warmth on his palms. My heart flipped.
His pheromones wafted in the air, making me dizzy.
Suddenly, I remembered the gossip of the women in the village.
They discussed the muscles under Terry's thin shirt and the slight bulge of his shorts. They had never seen anyone in the village as strong as him.
Moreover, Terry had a handsome and straight face.
He was considered handsome even 20 years later.
I envied Alyssa and felt lucky that she didn't want Terry.
It's finally my turn to live so well in this life.
Outside, firecrackers sounded all day, and the air was filled with the smell of gunpowder.
Children giggled, peeking at me from the door.
When I caught them, they blushed and exclaimed, "The bride is so beautiful, and her skin is so fair."
My sister-in-law, Lena Davis took out a handful of candy from her pocket and gave it to them, asking them to go play elsewhere.
Then she came into the room and put down the tray in her hand before picking up a pastry that I liked and handing it to me.
I ate it eagerly and was surprised to find that this pastry was much tastier than any I had eaten before.
Lena touched the wedding dress on my body admiringly. "No wonder this wedding dress cost ten thousand dollars. Look at the patterns on it and tailoring. It's worth the money."
I almost choked at her words.
Lena quickly brought me some water to soothe my throat.
I looked down and saw crumbs all over my dress, feeling distressed.
"This dress is so expensive, and I got it dirty. Your brother won't be angry, will he?"
Lena froze and then burst into laughter.
"My brother is so happy. How could he blame you?"
Suddenly, I remembered that in my previous life, when Alyssa got married, she wore the same dress as me. She borrowed it from a married woman in the village.
She was not wearing this white wedding dress.
Lena said to me, "When your family proposed marriage through the matchmaker, my brother had me inquire about your size and bought the dress from the city."
I was shocked and didn't know what to say.
A million questions swirled in my mind, and I subconsciously turned my gaze to the pastry.
Lena winked at me, "This pastry was also bought from the city. He knew you liked it."
My lips parted, and my eyes sparkled with excitement. I was so eager to meet my groom.
I wondered why he was so kind to me in my previous life.
He gave me pork and provided funds when he learned that I was going to start a business in the city.
At that time, I thought it was because he loved Alyssa and wanted to help me.
Turned out it had nothing to do with Alyssa. The one he liked had always been me.
Chapter 3
Alyssa had a graceful figure, making the outdated wedding dress look radiant.
From the moment she appeared in front of Felipe, his eyes never left her.
Alyssa raised her chin proudly.
The surrounding villagers congratulated Felipe for winning such a beauty. In her eighteen years of life, she had never heard so many compliments at once.
Alyssa was flattered.
Unfortunately, all these praises shifted to me as soon as I stepped out of the house.
In the 1990s, the villagers had little exposure to the outside world and only saw glimpses of it when movies were shown in the countryside.
The newlywed brides were envious.
"Olivia, your wedding dress is so beautiful."
"Terry really knows how to treat his wife well, renting such an expensive wedding dress."
Alyssa stood opposite, grinding her teeth.
She remembered wearing a red wedding dress in her past life too.
Why did Olivia get to wear a wedding dress?
How was she worthy?
"Olivia, you better cherish it. If you ruin it, Terry might get so angry that he calls off the wedding."
Someone overheard her bitter words and couldn't help but mock, "Why didn't Felipe rent a good wedding dress for you? Couldn't afford it? Or did he spend all his money compensating the wives he had taken advantage of?"
"You!" Alyssa's face turned red with anger.
I smiled behind my hand.
Alyssa gritted her teeth. "What are you laughing about? If I hadn't rejected the marriage, it wouldn't be your turn!"
"Who said I wanted to marry you?"
Just as I was about to retort to Alyssa, Terry's deep voice came from behind us.
The moment I turned around, I was stunned.
Terry was dressed in a white suit that matched mine, making him look like a genteel gentleman from the movies.
The young wives around us couldn't take their eyes off him, lamenting their lack of luck.
He wrapped an arm around my shoulder and stood beside me.
"Tell me his name, and I'll have someone slap him. Who wouldn't want to marry Olivia?
"And by the way, my family isn't poor enough to rent wedding dresses.
"I bought this dress. Even if Olivia wanted to use it to start a fire, I’d still be happy."
When the crowd heard that, they all looked at me with envy.
"How does Olivia have such good luck, marrying into a wealthy family like Terry's? In the future, not only will she eat meat every day, but even a dog she raises will eat better than Alyssa."
Alyssa was almost exploding with anger.
She pretended to cover her nose, looking disgusted. "I never said I wanted to marry you anyway. Who would want to marry a man reeking of bad smell?"
I tilted my head and sniffed, only smelling a faint, refreshing scent of soap.
Lena stood out to refute her.
"Stop talking nonsense. My brother hired someone to take care of the pigs for several days just to avoid smelling like them.
"He washed off several times, worried that Alyssa would dislike him!"
Alyssa's face turned ashen and flushed.
"How is that possible?"
I gave her a provocative smile. "It is possible, depending on who he marries.
"If it's for someone worthy, no effort feels enough."
Alyssa was irritated.
I linked arms with Terry, accompanying him to toast the villagers.
I glanced at Alyssa, who was gulping water furiously.
It was just the start.
The fun part was still ahead.
