Chapter 1 of After I Found His Pregnant Mistress, I Broke the Bond

Three days before the fertility consultation, I dreamed of pups. Small, warm bodies tumbling over each other in the pack house nursery. Declan's cedar-and-smoke scent mixing with milk and clean linen. I woke smiling, Solene purring contentment deep in my chest.

Today felt like the beginning of that future.

I dressed carefully that morning—a simple cream sweater and dark jeans, nothing formal. This was a private appointment, not a Luna appearance. Buster, my golden retriever, padded after me to the door, his tail wagging hopefully.

"Not today, buddy," I told him, scratching behind his ears. "Just a quick visit to the Healer Wing."

The drive to Ironveil's medical facility took twenty minutes through pine-thick territory. I'd made this trip dozens of times as Luna—visiting injured warriors, checking on new mothers, ensuring the pack's most vulnerable were cared for. But today was different. Today I was planning my own family.

The Healer Wing reception was quiet when I arrived. Winona, the receptionist, glanced up from her desk. She was a small woman, maybe mid-thirties, with careful eyes and the kind of stillness that came from years of being background.

"Luna Isla," she said softly. "Dr. Reyes is running a few minutes behind. There's coffee in the waiting area."

"Thank you, Winona."

I settled into one of the chairs, flipping through a magazine without reading it. The waiting room smelled like antiseptic and lavender. Soothing. Professional. Exactly what a Healer Wing should smell like.

Except.

Solene stirred.

I lowered the magazine slowly. There was something else beneath the lavender. Faint. Familiar. A ghost of cedar and smoke drifting from somewhere down the restricted corridor to my left.

My thumb pressed against my inner wrist. Hard.

Declan had been here recently. That wasn't unusual—Alphas visited the Healer Wing regularly. But this scent wasn't fading the way a casual visit would leave it. It lingered. Clung.

I stood and walked toward the corridor. It was marked with a small sign: "VIP Recovery—Authorized Personnel Only."

"Luna?" Winona's voice was careful behind me. "That area is restricted."

I turned. "I'm the Luna of this pack. Which areas are restricted to me?"

She hesitated. Just for a heartbeat. But I caught it—the flicker of conflict across her face, the way her eyes dropped to her desk before rising again.

"Of course," she said quietly. "I only meant—Dr. Reyes will be ready for you soon."

I smiled. Polite. Unmoved. "I'll just be a moment."

The corridor was short. Three doors. Two standing open to empty rooms. The third sealed, a small screen beside it displaying a single line of text: "Authorization: Alpha Declan—Private."

Solene's purr died.

I stood in front of that door for a long time. My hand hovered over the keypad. Pack law gave me access to any room in Ironveil's territory as Luna. But the fact that Declan had personally coded this room, that his authorization was required, that his scent ghosted the air like a signature—

I pressed my thumb to the scanner.

The door slid open.

The room inside was warm. Sunlit. A private recovery den with soft furniture, medical monitors pushed discreetly to one side, and a she-wolf sitting upright on the bed. One hand rested on her belly. Very pregnant. Maybe seven months.

She looked at me without surprise.

"Hello, Luna," she said calmly.

I didn't move. Didn't speak. Solene was utterly silent inside me—the kind of silence that comes before a howl.

The she-wolf had dark hair pulled into a loose braid. Her face was pretty in an unremarkable way. But her scent—

Cedar. Faint but unmistakable. Declan's scent, not borrowed but absorbed. The way scent clings when someone has been close. Intimate. Repeatedly.

"You're wondering who I am," she continued. Her voice was steady. Rehearsed. "My name is Marina Garza. And the pup I'm carrying belongs to your mate."

I finally found my voice. It came out quieter than I expected. "That's not possible."

"Isn't it?" Marina tilted her head slightly. "Declan and I were together before his wolf awakened. Before your Come of Age Ceremony. Before the Moon Goddess decided you were more convenient."

My thumb pressed harder against my wrist. "If you were together, he would have rejected you when he recognized me. That's pack law."

"He didn't reject me," Marina said simply. "He never has."

She shifted on the bed, her hand moving in slow circles over her belly. "Do you want proof, Luna? I can tell you things. The scar on his left shoulder blade from a training accident when he was sixteen. The way he grinds his teeth when he's anxious. How he takes his coffee—black, two sugars, but only in the morning."

Each detail landed like a stone dropped into still water.

"Those are things anyone close to him might know," I said.

Marina smiled. It didn't reach her eyes. "The birthmark on his inner thigh. Shaped like a crescent moon. I could describe it in detail if you'd like."

Solene finally moved. A low, warning growl that vibrated through my ribs.

Before I could respond, the door behind me slammed open.

Declan stood in the doorway. His face was pale. His chest heaved like he'd run the entire way.

"Isla," he said. Just my name. But I heard the panic underneath it.

Then his eyes cut to Marina. And everything about him changed.

"SILENCE."

The Alpha tone hit like a physical blow. The walls seemed to vibrate with it. Marina flinched, her hands flying to her belly protectively.

Declan crossed the room in three strides, putting himself between me and Marina. When he turned to face me, his expression was smooth. Concerned. Perfectly composed.

"I'm sorry you had to see this," he said gently. "This woman is—she's not well, Isla. She's a rogue I showed mercy to months ago. Gave her medical care when she had nowhere else to go. And she's become... fixated."

I looked past him at Marina. Her face had gone white. But her eyes were defiant.

"Fixated," I repeated.

"Delusional," Declan confirmed. He reached for my hand. His scent—cedar and smoke, the scent that had called to Solene since my awakening—wrapped around me. "She's been claiming the pup is mine for weeks. I've been trying to handle it quietly, to avoid a scene. I was going to tell you tonight."

His thumb stroked the back of my hand. "I should have told you sooner. I'm sorry."

I watched his face. The sincerity there. The warmth in his eyes.

Then I smelled it.

Beneath the cedar. Beneath the smoke. A spike of something sharp and acrid.

Fear.

Not fear of Marina. Fear of me. Fear of what I now knew.

I pulled my hand back slowly.

"You were going to tell me tonight," I said.

"Yes."

"After months of hiding her here. Under your personal authorization."

Declan's jaw tightened. "I was protecting you from this. From her."

Behind him, Marina laughed. It was a broken, bitter sound.

"Protecting her?" she said. "Or protecting yourself, Declan?"

"Enough." His Alpha tone cracked through the room again. He turned back to Marina, his voice dropping to something cold and dangerous. "If you speak another word, I will have my Gamma drag you off pack territory tonight. Do you understand?"

Marina's defiance crumbled. She pressed back against the headboard, cradling her belly.

Declan turned to me again. His expression softened. "Let's go home. Please. We can talk there. Privately."

I looked at him. At Marina. At the sealed room with his authorization code. At the scent of cedar clinging to her skin.

Solene was silent. Waiting.

"No," I said quietly.

Declan blinked. "What?"

"I'm not leaving until someone tells me the truth."

His face shifted. Just for a second. But I saw it—the calculation behind his eyes. The moment he decided which lie to tell next.
