Chapter 2
I sat on the sofa and ate prunes while listening to them flirting. Laurent used to say that when he was in a bad mood, he would eat some sweets. But today, the prunes were sour.
The year when Laurent’s godfather passed away, as his godmother, our relationship was strained. But he didn’t dislike me for marrying his godfather for money and he wasn’t mean to me. If my mother hadn’t been seriously ill and had no money to treat her illness, I wouldn’t have become Laurent’s godmother.
After his father died, during the years we were together, he would pay close attention to my preferences. Knowing that I liked to eat small cakes, he personally cooked for me and made me a small cake. Although I always say that eating cake would make me fat, I would eat it every time as long as it is a cake made by Laurent.
Now when I think of this, I looked at Laurent with only resentment in my eyes. Why did he have someone else outside and still hang on to me? Was it just for the property left by his godfather?
Julie took out a delicate small cake gift box from her bag and gave it to me. Looking at the very familiar small cake, I knew it was made by Laurent at a glance. He always sprinkled icing on the small cake.
"Melinda, I know you had a hard time when you were a child. Your father valued boys over girls and didn't give you food. Eat this cake and you will never remember the hardship in the past."
At that time, the sweetness of the cake overwhelmed the bitterness of childhood and we loved each other passionately and embraced each other.
Now looking at this small cake, I felt that the cake was spicy and bitter. How could I eat such a sweet thing before?
Seeing that I was in a trance, Julie smiled and began to show off.
"Auntie, Laurent insisted on making a small cake for me to eat and even put a special box for me. I have been losing weight these days and I can't eat anything sweet. Auntie, if you don't like it, just throw it in the trash can."
After hearing this, I threw the cake directly on the ground.
Laurent frowned as he looked at the cake on the ground, "Godmother, Julie means well, how can you throw the cake directly on the ground?"
Hearing the word "godmother", I was deafened and felt like I was in an ice cellar. He had never called me "godmother" before.
I glanced at him sideways, with a low tone. "I don't deserve your godmother, you should still call me by my name."
Laurent frowned and looked unhappy, "Melinda, I call you godmother for the sake of my godfather, don't be shameless."
I couldn't help but sneer, tiptoed and whispered in his ear, "When you climbed onto my bed, did you think of your godfather's face?"
Laurent's face changed and he just said to Julie, "Julie, go back first, I have something to discuss with my godmother."
Julie looked at the tense relationship between the two of us, with a raised corner of her mouth, a victorious attitude.
I looked at Julie's back as she left and said sarcastically, "Laurent, who do you think of me? Your bed partner who can't see the light of day?"
Laurent lit a cigarette slowly, "Have you forgotten what your original identity was?"
His words froze me in place and I didn't want to think about the past.
I was born in a slum and my father was a gambler. When I was 18, my father owed the family a lot of gambling debts and ran away. In order to pay off my father's huge gambling debts, I went to school during the day and worked as a lady at the bar at night to make money to pay off the debts.
Later, Laurent's godfather took a fancy to me, helped me pay off my father's gambling debts and gave me money to treat my mother's illness. But the condition was that I married Mr. Edwards and became Laurent's godmother.
Because of my original family, I was very grateful for the help of Laurent's godfather and his family.
Chapter 3
It was just that I married less than half a year and Laurent's godfather passed away. Laurent's godfather was grateful for my care and left half of his inheritance to me. I didn't spend a penny of that inheritance and I was relieved to leave it to Laurent to manage.
In the past two years, every time I wanted to make our relationship public, he used my identity as a godmother to stop me.
"It's not good for you if we make our relationship public, so let's talk about it when the time is right."
Because of that heavy gratitude, I never said a word of no to Laurent. Now thinking back at it, he might not have thought of making our relationship public to outsiders. He only cared about his face. I suppressed those bad memories of the past and smiled coldly.
"So what? I am no longer the person I used to be. You want to get rid of me, your godmother and marry this bitch, I will make your life restless."
Laurent stared at me coldly. "Don't make a fuss, Julie is a good girl, not the bitch you say. If you dare to say that to her again, you will lose the property under your name. "
Listening to Laurent's increasingly shameless words, I subconsciously kicked the man in the lower body, wish I could making him childless. However, Laurent reacted quickly, dodged, grabbed my wrist and pushed me hard onto the sofa beside me.
The next second, I fainted.
In the hospital, before I opened my eyes, I heard Laurent and Julie arguing.
Julie said in a teasing tone, "Laurent, does your godmother have someone else outside? She's pregnant."
Laurent sneered, "If she's pregnant, get rid of it. The reputation of my Edwards family can't be ruined in her hands."
I lay on the bed and touched my belly unconsciously, tears kept falling.
When they left the ward, I walked to the hospital lobby in a daze. I stroked my belly and watched other husbands supporting their pregnant wives and I couldn't help but sigh.
Before I walked out of the hospital gate, Laurent took me home with a dark face. He never mentioned the pregnancy from beginning to end.
Looking at his cold attitude towards me, I sneered and asked back, "You know I'm pregnant, right?"
Laurent didn't speak, but his eyes couldn't help but stare at my belly.
I stared at his unhappy look and the corners of my mouth rose slightly, "I heard Julie say that I have someone outside, do you think I should bring your stepfather in?"
Laurent pulled my arm angrily. "How dare you!? Melinda, I'm only on a business trip for a month and you dare to find another man behind my back. Who is that man?"
I raised the corners of my mouth and smiled at him, "It's your godfather."
Laurent was so angry that he arranged an abortion for me overnight, fearing that I would have a negative impact on his family's reputation. He was afraid that I would run away, so he specially arranged for Julie to watch me.
Julie smiled and took my hand and asked me, "Auntie, I know you like children. I am willing to help you leave as long as you don't bother Laurent anymore."
I raised my eyebrows and asked her, "Are you so kind? Believe it or not."
Although Julie's words had a big problem, I couldn't accept being imprisoned under Laurent's nose.
In the end, I agreed to Julie's proposal.
The night when Laurent prepared an abortion for me, Julie brought a man over.
I stared at Julie defensively, clenching my fists, fearing that Julie had set a trap for me. I only heard the man laughing and making a pleasant sound.
"Isn't she Laurent's godmother? If you want her to die, just say it. "
"William, hurry up, or Laurent will find you if you hesitate any longer."
I looked at the familiar face of the man and my heart stagnated. He was William Brandon, Laurent's good brother, always felt like I had seen him somewhere before. I didn't even know it turned out that William was Julie's cousin.
Julie took out a set of white clothes that could cover my face and asked me to put them on.
"There are cameras everywhere in the room. You two can pretend to be boyfriend and girlfriend in front of Laurent and go out."
In order to escape from Laurent's control, I took the initiative to hold William's arm and followed him out.
As soon as I reached the door, Laurent came over with a cold face and frowned at me with my face wrapped tightly.
"William, who is she?" Laurent asked.
I trembled as I held his hard arm, hoping that he would not reveal the truth.
William coughed lightly, "Oh, this is my girlfriend. But she had urticaria these two days and it is not convenient for people to see her face."
Laurent's eyes kept falling on me, questioning, "You don't even have a female mosquito around you, how can you have a girlfriend?"
William asked seriously, "One-night stand in the bar, isn't it okay?"
Laurent frowned and reached out to grab my mask to find out.
