After His Wife Destroyed My Mother's Grave, I Disappeared Summary

For four long years, I mastered the art of survival within the cold, opulent Griffin dynasty. Chapter 1 of After His Wife Destroyed My Mother's Grave, I Disappeared

The Griffin family's private dining room smelled like money. Leather and old wood and something floral I couldn't name. I sat three seats from the end of the table, which was exactly where I always sat. Close enough to be present. Far enough to be forgotten.

I wore the navy dress Damari liked. Simple. No jewelry except the pearl necklace my mother left me. I kept my hands in my lap and my voice low when the woman beside me asked about the wine. I had learned, over four years, how to take up no space at all.

Across the table, Damari was talking to his grandfather about a merger. His voice carried the way it always did in rooms like this. Certain. Final. He didn't look at me. He never did at these dinners. That was the arrangement.

I told myself I understood.

The woman two seats down leaned toward her companion. She was older, with silver hair and diamonds at her throat. A society columnist whose name I'd seen in print but never heard spoken aloud. She whispered something behind her hand. Her eyes flicked to me. Her companion smiled.

I looked down at my plate.

The venison was perfect. I couldn't taste it.

"Damari." The voice came from the far end of the table. Marcus Hale, a senior associate in the Griffin financial division. His face was flushed with bourbon. His tie was loose. "When are you planning to sort out the situation?"

The room didn't go quiet. That would have been too obvious. But the conversations around us softened. People were listening now.

Damari set down his fork. His expression didn't change. "I'm not sure what you're referring to, Marcus."

Marcus gestured vaguely with his glass. Liquid sloshed near the rim. "The situation," he said again, louder this time. "You know. The one everyone's been too polite to mention."

I stopped breathing.

Damari's grandfather—Edmund Griffin, the man who built the empire Damari would inherit—looked at Marcus with the kind of cold patience that preceded consequences. "Marcus. You're drunk."

"I'm honest," Marcus said. He laughed. No one joined him. "Come on. We all know. It's not exactly a secret anymore."

The columnist whispered again. This time I heard it. "Poor thing. She actually thought—"

I didn't hear the rest.

I looked at Damari. I couldn't help it. I needed him to say something. To stand. To correct the record or defend me or even just acknowledge that I was sitting here, three seats from the end, wearing the dress he liked.

He met my eyes.

For a moment, I thought I saw something. Regret, maybe. Or discomfort. But then his gaze slid away. He picked up his wine glass. He turned back to his grandfather.

"The merger closes Friday," he said.

The conversation resumed. Marcus muttered something into his bourbon. The columnist's companion laughed softly.

I sat very still. My hands were still in my lap. My mother's necklace felt heavy against my collarbone.

I had been invisible for four years. I had accepted it. I had told myself it was temporary. That the secrecy was necessary. That Damari loved me even if he couldn't say it in rooms like this.

But now I understood something I hadn't let myself see before.

I wasn't invisible because the relationship was secret.

I was secret because I was disposable.

The venison sat cold on my plate. I didn't touch it again. When the dinner ended—speeches about quarterly projections, polite laughter, the scrape of chairs against hardwood—I stood and smoothed my dress and walked toward the door. No one stopped me. No one said goodbye.

Damari was still talking to his grandfather.

I stepped into the hallway. The air was cooler here. I pressed my palm against the wall and closed my eyes.

Four years.

I had given him four years.

I walked to the elevator. I rode down alone. The lobby was marble and silence. Outside, the car Damari had sent for me was waiting at the curb. The driver opened the door without speaking.

I slid into the back seat. The leather was cold.

"Where to, Miss Wells?" the driver asked.

I almost said the apartment. The one Damari paid for. The one where I waited for him to finish his other life and come back to me.

Instead I said, "Just drive."

He pulled into traffic. The city blurred past the window. Lights and noise and people who had lives that belonged to them.

I touched my mother's necklace.

I thought about the columnist's smile. Marcus Hale's bourbon-soaked honesty. The way Damari looked away.

I thought about four years of patience. Four years of believing a promise.

I pulled out my phone. I opened a browser. I typed: one-way flights to London.

The results loaded.

I scrolled through them slowly. My hand was steady.

Behind me, Manhattan glittered like something beautiful and untouchable.

I didn't look back.
