Chapter 1 of After His Rejection, the Lycan Prince Claimed Me

The bond broke at exactly 10:14 p.m., three seconds after Asher spoke my name.

"I, Asher Peterson, Alpha of the Nightshade Pack, reject you, Maddison Gibson, as my mate."

The words hit like a physical blow. Something in my chest—the thread I'd felt humming beneath my ribs for years—snapped. Not gently. Not like a string breaking. Like a live wire severed mid-current, the ends whipping back and searing through my sternum. I staggered. My hand flew to my stomach, instinct before thought, cradling the life I carried there.

"I'm pregnant," I whispered.

The wolves nearest me heard. I saw their eyes widen. But Asher's jaw only tightened. He did not look at me. He looked past me, through me, the way he always had in daylight.

Gemma stepped forward then, her hand resting lightly on Asher's arm. She held up a folder—medical documents, blood panels, the pack healer's seal visible even from where I stood. Her voice carried across the ceremony grounds, steady and sympathetic.

"I'm dying," she said softly. "Mate-bond deterioration sickness. It's rare. Fatal. The only treatment requires a specific bonding enzyme—one only Maddison's blood carries."

The pack healer stepped forward and nodded. Confirmed it. I watched him lie with a straight face.

Asher finally looked at me. Not with regret. Not even with anger. With the cold practicality of a man who had already made his choice and was simply waiting for me to accept it.

"This is the price," he said, "of a bond you should never have expected me to honor."

Gemma smiled. Just slightly. Just enough.

Then the pain came.

The severed bond detonated through my wolf like a shockwave. She lurched inside my skull, keening—a sound only I could hear, high and wounded and wrong. The hollow space in my chest where the bond had lived went cold. Empty. Like a door slamming shut in an abandoned house.

My wolf tried to rise. Tried to fight. Her fury was a living thing, clawing its way up my throat—

Asher's voice cut through it. Alpha tone. Absolute.

"Be still."

My wolf collapsed. Paralyzed. Her rage muzzled mid-snarl. My limbs locked. I couldn't move. Couldn't shift. Couldn't even bare my teeth.

Asher took my arm. His grip was firm, impersonal. He walked me toward the pack house while the ceremony continued above us. Two pack members held doors. No one intervened. I was the charity-case Omega. This was a medical procedure. Necessary.

The stairs down to the extraction chamber were narrow and steep. My legs moved because his Alpha command still held me. Not because I willed them to.

The chamber smelled like silver and antiseptic and old blood.

The pack healer was already inside, laying out instruments on a metal tray. When he turned and saw me, he didn't flinch. He'd done this before. Maybe not to a pregnant woman. Maybe not without sedation. But he'd taken blood from wolves who didn't want to give it.

He strapped silver shackles to my wrists.

The metal kissed my skin and ignited. Pain—white-hot, immediate—tore up my arms. Smoke rose from the contact points. The smell of burning flesh filled the room. My flesh.

I screamed.

"Asher—" His name ripped out of me, raw and desperate. "Asher, please, I'm carrying your child—"

He stood in the doorway. Arms crossed. Watching.

The healer inserted the needle.

The silver burned deeper. My vision blurred. My wolf was silent—forced silent—but something else stirred. Not my wolf. Something beneath her. Older. Massive. Pressing against the inside of my ribs like a second heart trying to wake.

"Asher, look at me—" I begged. Hated myself for begging. "Please—"

He didn't blink.

The ancient thing inside me stopped pressing.

It detonated.

My Lycan wolf erupted without warning—silver-white, enormous, a beast I didn't know I carried. The shackles shattered like glass. The chamber walls cracked. The shockwave of her aura sent the healer flying backward into shelves stacked with wolfsbane vials. Glass exploded. Liquid splattered. Ignited.

Fire bloomed across the floor.

I barely felt my body anymore. My wolf—no, not my wolf, something far larger—tore through the burning room. Asher's voice behind me, shouting something I didn't hear.

I sent him one thought. One final mind-link before the bond turned to ash.

*We are even. The bond is ash.*

Then I ran.

The chamber collapsed behind me. Flames swallowed the corridor. I tore through the outer wall—wood and stone splitting under claws I didn't know I had—and vanished into the forest.

I ran until my legs gave out.

I woke to hands lifting me. Gentle. Deliberate. A scent I didn't recognize—winter pine and something older, cleaner, like snow that had never touched ground.

A man's voice, low and certain: "Lycan-blood. Royal line."

I tried to open my eyes. Couldn't.

"You're safe now," the voice said.

Then he carried me across the border, and Nightshade disappeared behind me.

When I finally opened my eyes hours later, I was in a room I'd never seen, wrapped in bandages that smelled like medicinal herbs and something faintly metallic. A man sat in the chair beside the bed—dark-haired, calm, watching me with the patience of someone who had already decided I was worth waiting for.

"I'm Cassius Lyall," he said. "Lycan Prince. And you're coming with me."

He stood and opened the door.

Outside, I heard voices preparing for departure.
