Chapter 1 of After His Mistress Framed Me, My Husband Lost Everything

I found out on a Tuesday.

It was the kind of morning that doesn't warn you. Coffee brewing, gray Seattle light coming through the kitchen window, Dario already gone to the office. I was scrolling through my phone the way you do when you're not really looking for anything—and then I was.

The article was titled 'Trophy Wives With No Ambition.' Byline: Baylee Olson.

I recognized the first photo before I recognized myself in it. I was standing at our kitchen counter in an oversized sweater, hair loose, no makeup. Dario had taken that picture on a Sunday morning maybe six months ago. He'd laughed and said I looked cute. I'd told him to delete it. He'd said he would.

There were eleven photos total.

Me in the grocery store. Me waiting outside Dario's office building. Me in the passenger seat of our car, eyes closed, head tipped back. Every single one pulled from a life I'd never agreed to put on display.

Baylee's caption under the first image read: *She has a personal shopper, a housekeeper, and a husband who built something. What exactly does she do all day?*

The comments had four million views by the time I found it. I read them all. I don't know why. Maybe I needed to understand the exact shape of it before I decided what to do.

*Imagine being this woman and still looking this sad.*

*Gold digger energy, honestly.*

*He deserves better.*

I set my phone face-down on the counter. I finished my coffee. Then I got in the car.

---

Dario's office occupied the fourteenth floor of a glass tower in South Lake Union. Gray & Partners. His name on the building directory in clean sans-serif font. I'd watched him choose that font.

The elevator opened into an open-plan floor of maybe thirty people. Heads turned when I walked in. They knew who I was—Dario's wife, the quiet one, the one who never came to the office. I could feel them recalibrating.

Dario was at the far end of the room, standing over someone's desk. He looked up when he saw me. Something moved across his face—not guilt, not quite. More like the particular tension of a man who knows he's about to be inconvenienced.

'Lara.' He crossed the floor toward me, voice low. 'What are you doing here?'

'Fire her.' I kept my voice even. 'Fire Baylee and issue a public retraction. Today.'

He glanced around. The room had gone very quiet.

'This isn't the place—'

'She used photos from your phone,' I said. 'My photos. Without my consent. And published them with four million people calling me a parasite.' I looked at him steadily. 'So yes. This is the place.'

Dario's jaw tightened. I watched him do the math—the room, the audience, the cost of each option. Then the door to the side conference room opened.

Baylee Olson stepped out.

She was twenty-six, with the kind of face that photographed beautifully from every angle—which I suspected she knew and had tested extensively. She stopped when she saw me. Her lips parted. Her eyes went immediately, perfectly wet.

'Lara.' Her voice was soft. Wounded. 'I never meant any harm. I thought—I thought it was content that celebrated your lifestyle, I never—'

Dario stepped toward her.

That was the moment. Not the photos. Not the four million comments. That single step.

He put his hand on her shoulder. He turned to me. 'Let it go,' he said. 'It was just content.'

I looked at his hand on her shoulder. I looked at his face—the careful neutrality of a man who had already made his choice and was waiting for me to accept it.

I left without another word.

---

At dinner I tried again. I don't know why I tried again.

I was calm. No accusation, no raised voice. I said: *I need you to understand that what she did was a violation. I need you to take it seriously.*

He was looking at his phone.

'You're insecure about nothing,' he said. 'She's basically an employee. And showing up at the office like that was embarrassing. For both of us.'

For both of us.

I straightened the salt shaker. I didn't say anything else.

---

The next morning, Baylee posted again.

This one was titled 'When Insecurity Goes Corporate.' There was a photo—blurred, but recognizable. Me, walking through the office corridor. The caption read: *Some people mistake silence for guilt and an apology for weakness. I have nothing to hide.*

Forty thousand shares by noon.

I opened the folder on my laptop. I'd created it three weeks ago, after the first article, when I'd told myself I was probably overreacting. The folder was titled 'Documentation.' I added the screenshot.

Then I went to make coffee.

Black. No sugar. I drank it standing at the window, watching the rain come in off the sound, thinking about the step Dario had taken toward her.

Just one step. But I'd been watching this man for nine years. I knew what his steps meant.
