Chapter 1 of After His Fiancée Publicly Shamed Me, He Chose My Side

The contract was three pages long. I knew because I'd already torn through the first two.

Victor Hale slapped the third page flat on the table in front of me, smoothing the corner like he was presenting a dinner menu. The back room smelled like cigarettes and mildew and something metallic I was trying not to think about. A single bulb swung overhead. Three of his guys stood behind me, close enough that I could feel the heat off them.

'Sign it,' Hale said.

My lip was split. My left wrist had a bruise the shape of a handprint. I looked at the contract — the words body, services, term of eighteen months — and I thought about my father. About the way he used to say my name. Emmeline. Three syllables, like it meant something.

I picked up the pen.

Then I spit blood on the signature line.

'My father was Thomas Gray,' I said. My voice came out steadier than I felt. 'You know that name. Everyone in this city knows that name. And when I get out of this room, I will make sure everyone in this city knows yours.'

Hale's face went flat. He raised his hand.

The door came off its hinges.

Not opened. Not kicked. It came off. The whole frame shuddered and one of the enforcers stumbled back and I was already on my feet, chair scraping, when the man walked in.

He was tall. Dark suit, the kind that costs more than most people's rent. No tie. He moved through the doorway like the room had been expecting him, like the three enforcers between him and me were a minor inconvenience he'd already accounted for. His eyes found Hale first. Then they found me.

Something shifted in his face. It was fast — a fraction of a second — and then it was gone, locked behind an expression so controlled it barely qualified as one.

He crossed the room in four steps, put his shoe on Victor Hale's chest, and pressed down until Hale was flat on the floor making a sound like a deflating tire.

Then he pulled out his phone.

He didn't look at me while he typed. He didn't look at Hale either. He looked at the screen with the focused calm of a man paying a utility bill.

'Three million,' he said. 'Cleared. Every cent she owes, every cent of interest, every fee you invented.' He glanced down at Hale. 'If I hear her name come out of your mouth again, I'll buy this building and have it demolished with you inside it.'

Hale didn't answer. Hale was busy trying to breathe.

The man finally looked at me.

Up close, he was younger than I'd expected. Late twenties, maybe. Sharp jaw, dark eyes that were doing something complicated — like he was trying very hard to look at my split lip without reacting to it, and failing slightly.

'You've kept me waiting a long time,' he said quietly. 'Little creditor.'

I stared at him.

I had no idea what that meant. I had no idea who he was. My head was ringing and my wrist hurt and I was standing in a nightclub back room with blood on my chin, and this man in his ten-thousand-dollar suit was looking at me like I was something he'd been searching for.

'I don't know you,' I said.

'No,' he agreed. 'But I know you.' He held out his hand. 'Declan Webb. And I believe you're owed a very large repayment.'

---

His penthouse was on the thirty-eighth floor of a building on Fifth Avenue that had a private elevator and a lobby that smelled like money — that specific, quiet smell of marble and fresh flowers and air that has never been recycled.

I sat on his couch with an ice pack on my wrist and watched him pour two glasses of water like it was the most natural thing in the world to bring a half-beaten stranger home at two in the morning.

He set one glass in front of me and sat across from me and explained it simply. Ten years ago, he said, someone gave him money when he had nothing. He'd been looking for that person ever since. He intended to repay the debt.

I listened to all of it. Then I said, 'How much?'

He blinked. Just once. 'Excuse me?'

'The debt. How much are we talking?' I picked up the water glass. 'Because if you wired three million tonight, and that's just the interest on whatever I apparently lent you, I want to know the principal.'

A pause. Something moved at the corner of his mouth. 'Five thousand dollars.'

'And the current value?'

'Considerably more than three million.'

'Then we have a lot to discuss.' I met his eyes. 'I'm not your charity case, Mr. Webb. I'm your creditor. There's a difference. Creditors have rights.'

He looked at me for a long moment. Then he said, 'Yes. They do.'

I slept in his guest room that night because I had nowhere else to go and I was too tired to pretend otherwise. I told myself it was a transaction. I was owed money. I was collecting. That was all this was.

---

In the morning I found his kitchen, found his coffee, and was halfway through a cup when the elevator opened.

She was beautiful in the way that required significant maintenance — perfect blowout, cream blazer, the kind of handbag that had a waiting list. She stepped into the penthouse like she owned it and stopped when she saw me.

I was wearing Declan's shirt. It hit mid-thigh. I hadn't bothered to look for anything else.

We looked at each other.

'Who are you?' she said.

I took a sip of coffee. 'Emmeline Gray. And you are?'

'Kendall Oliver.' The name landed like she expected me to flinch. 'Declan's fiancée.'

'Mm.' I set the mug down. 'He didn't mention that.'

Her jaw tightened. 'What are you doing here?'

'Collecting a debt,' I said. 'I'm his creditor. My claim predates your engagement, I'd imagine.' I smiled at her. 'You should probably talk to him about the timeline.'

She opened her mouth. Then Declan appeared in the hallway behind her, jacket on, already dressed, and she turned to him with an expression that expected rescue.

He looked at me first. Just for a second. And the corner of his mouth did that thing again — that almost-not-there thing — before he looked at Kendall with an expression that gave her absolutely nothing.

'Kendall,' he said. 'I didn't know you were coming.'

She waited for more. He didn't offer it.

I picked up my coffee.
