Chapter 1
A massive earthquake suddenly struck my hometown a thousand kilometers away, and my grandma was trapped beneath the rubble.
I desperately wanted to rush home to save her, but I couldn't drive, so I had no choice but to beg Sheldon for a ride.
However, just half an hour before our planned departure, Sheldon abruptly informed me that he couldn't make our appointment because he had just received another booking.
It felt like I had been plunged into an icy abyss.
My hometown had no airport.
Air travel is impossible.
If I booked a ticket now, it would take at least two days to get there.
In an almost pleading tone, I asked him, "Sheldon, my grandma is in grave danger. Is there any way you could get out of that booking?"
His response was agonizingly delayed.
After a long wait, I only heard Lindsay's voice urging,
"Sheldon, come over here and help me tie this strap!"
"Coming,"
he replied, and the phone was instantly hung up.
It turned out it wasn't a professional commitment, just a casual rendezvous with his partner.
When I needed him most, he abandoned me to be with Lindsay.
After the call ended, I hurried to the highway, desperately trying to hail a taxi.
But many drivers shook their heads and drove off upon hearing my destination.
"Girl, there's been an 8.0 magnitude quake in that border town. Who would risk their life for that?"
It was already late at night, and I stood on the road like a zombie, watching vehicles pass by, feeling confused and desperate.
I called Sheldon again, but a cold automated voice answered, "Hello, the number you dialed is turned off."
I knew it.
Whenever I called for his help and he refused, if I persisted, he would switch off his phone.
When did our relationship become like this?
I finally booked a ticket.
But the journey of over 20 hours, including transfers, took me three days.
Upon returning home, the earthquake had passed, leaving only ruins in the entire border town.
My grandma's body was mangled beyond recognition by mud and rocks, her original appearance lost forever.
The only thing she still clutched tightly was a photo of the three of us.
That was the first time I had brought Sheldon home to meet her, and she had specially hired a photographer to capture the occasion.
My eyes were dry.
My tears had already been exhausted on the journey.
With our house destroyed, a proper funeral was impossible.
I forced myself to take grandma to a nearby crematorium.
It wasn't until her ashes were placed in a box and handed to me that Sheldon finally called, asking, "Cynthia, why didn't you reply to my message?"
I opened my phone to find just one sentence:
"Lindsay and I still need to adjust our makeup test photos, so don't bother me anymore. I will accompany you back when I am free."
The message was sent three days ago.
When I was already on the train.
The screen then displayed Sheldon's latest post on X.
Probably about those makeup test photos he mentioned.
He held Lindsay in an unmistakably possessive embrace.
The comments below that photo were all gushing over his interaction with Lindsay.
Sheldon is the Screen Legend, and Lindsay is his partner who has worked with him time and time again.
In the eyes of all netizens, they are a match made in heaven, a perfect couple - it's like they're already married, just missing the certificate.
Little did anyone realize that the most inconspicuous person around Sheldon was actually his girlfriend.
But now, I no longer want to be his assistant or girlfriend anymore.
Chapter 2
I replied indifferently, "Sheldon, I want to resign, and we break up."
I hung up the phone before he could say anything.
And I blocked all means of contact with him.
When I came to my senses, my eyes started to hurt again.
It would be a lie to say it doesn't hurt.
After all, we had been together for almost ten years.
The government gave me some compensation, and I took my grandma's ashes to Hai City and moved into the house she used to live in.
Before she passed away, my grandma once said she was from Hai City, and if she died one day, she hoped to return to her home, which would be like returning to her roots.
But I didn't expect to see Sheldon and Lindsay in the house.
Lindsay hugged Sheldon's arm and shook him, "Sheldon, you are so good to me that I can't believe you want to give me this house."
"It's a bit old, but the air is good and there's the sea across the street. It can still be lived in after some renovation. When I want to see the sea, I would stay here for a few days..."
Sheldon raised his lips into a gentle smile, "It's up to you."
I never thought that Sheldon would give the house to Lindsay.
I clearly told him that this house belongs to my grandma.
His light words "It's up to you" shattered my remaining sanity.
I yelled, "Sheldon, this is my grandma's house, what qualifications do you have to give it to someone else!"
Hearing my angry voice, they both turned around at the same time.
Maybe he didn't expect me to be here, and was stunned for a moment.
Lindsay looked at me with a smile, "Assistant Cynthia, didn't you say you were going back to see your grandma? Why are you here?"
Her words successfully turned Sheldon's face cold, "Cynthia, is lying fun? I'll settle the score with you when I get back!"
It turned out that he thought I was lying to him when I said I was going to look for my grandma.
And he thought I just followed him here secretly because I was angry and couldn't let him go.
Maybe I look too bad.
Sheldon's tone softened. "Since you are here, I'll mention this to you. Today is Lindsay's birthday. She has taken a fancy to this house. Ask your grandma for it. I'll buy it."
He didn't discuss it with me, but informed me directly.
But on what grounds!
That is the only thing that grandma left in this world.
There was a dull pain in my heart.
Grandma, you see, we were all deceived by Sheldon's sincere appearance.
I suppressed my anger and said, "Impossible!"
Lindsay curled her lips slightly, but said apologetically, "Cynthia, don't be angry, it's just a house."
"I know you're still upset about Sheldon standing you off a few days ago and going to the crew to accompany me. I apologize to you. I'm sorry."
"But he didn't mean to make you wait so long. I was accidentally injured by a prop later. Sheldon took care of me for a long time and didn't get enough rest, so..."
Sheldon also agreed. "Yes, she is injured. As a partner, what's wrong with me taking care of her?"
Lindsay is a rising starlet. She possessed a delicate, pitiful facade that belied an indomitable inner strength, and she caught the attention of Sheldon during a performance with him.
From then on, things got out of control.
Sheldon became more and more interested in her and he would provide any good resources he could find.
If she was bullied on the crew, Sheldon was the first to stand up for her.
Chapter 3
Ever since the video went viral of Sheldon coldly ignoring others on set, scooping up Lindsay and walking away, everyone knew this lady had the Screen Legend's protection - no one dared look down on her.
I don't know when it started, but now he spent more time with her than with me.
We had an argument about it.
But he claimed he just felt Lindsay was too pitiful, like me, so he couldn't help but take better care of her - that's all.
Thinking about it now, I can't help but laugh at my naivety.
Look, I'm not even dead yet, and he's already started looking for a replacement.
I said sarcastically, "Since he cares about you so much, you two might as well be handcuffed together. But now, please get out of my house."
Sheldon's voice tinged with anger, "Cynthia! How many times must I say it? Nothing happened between Lindsay and me!"
"This is clearly just something I have to go through for work! You're being so narrow-minded!"
"If you continue like this, I think it's necessary to fire you."
When he mentioned "fire", his tone unconsciously became heavier.
I said coldly, "Sheldon, you don't need to mention it, I've already resigned."
"Also, if you don't get out of here, I'm calling the police."
Sheldon's face was gloomy, but he said nothing more.
After a long while, he rubbed his brows, obviously a little tired, "Cynthia, is it necessary for us to quarrel like this?"
I picked up a bucket of water and poured it at him.
"What do you think? Sheldon, you probably can't imagine how sad I was when you used work as an excuse to date other women."
"You never consider my feelings. You just treat me as a plaything. You coax me when you're happy and throw me aside when you're unhappy."
"From the moment you brought Lindsay in and said you wanted to give the house to her, I wanted to pour water on you."
"You are so shameless."
The water splashed all over him. He wiped his face and said angrily, "Cynthia! If you want to lose your temper, you should consider the occasion. Am I spoiling you too much?"
Lindsay's eyes flashed with schadenfreude, but she smiled bitterly and said, "Sheldon, I'm really sorry for the situation between you and Cynthia now. But, Cynthia, don't worry, this is the last time I'll work with Sheldon. After this is over, I'll announce my retirement and won't bother you anymore."
Sheldon looked at her fiercely, his eyes full of anger and heartache, "Why are you apologizing to her? You have a seriously ill mother at home. What will you do to earn money to treat your mother's illness if you quit the entertainment industry?"
He looked at me again with an icy glare, "Cynthia, apologize to Lindsay!"
I chuckled, "Sheldon, I haven't done anything yet. You want me to apologize for no reason? Fine, kneel down and beg me."
Lindsay's eyes suddenly turned red. "Cynthia, I've already apologized to you, why are you still being so aggressive?"
Sheldon's voice filled with anger, "Cynthia, don't force me to break up with you!"
I took a step forward.
"Go ahead, haven't we already broken up?"
Sheldon immediately shielded Lindsay behind him, as if I were some vicious beast, and said vigilantly, "Cynthia, I warn you, if you dare do anything to Lindsay, I will never..."
I interrupted him sarcastically, "You think too much. She has you, the Screen Legend, as her protector. What can I do to her? I just want to grab the broom beside her."
