Chapter 1

Ugly face

My boyfriend's mother, Amanda Perez, thought she could manipulate me when I was pregnant before the wedding, asking me for three hundred thousand dollars as my wedding gift for her while refusing to give me anything back.

Otherwise, she would tell her son, Marcus Anderson, to break up with me.

I just had to say this was a really bad idea.

I made an appointment for an abortion the next day.

I wouldn't allow that old bitch to trap me with my child.

Looking at the two bars on the pregnancy test stick, I felt very distraught.

Marcus hugged me in surprise and said, "Jasmine, let's get married. I will be responsible for you."

Leaning in his arms, I still couldn't digest the shock and didn't notice the strange excitement in his tone.

We clearly took protection every time, so how could I get pregnant?

But after listening to his comforting words, I gradually calmed down.

We had been in a stable relationship since we were in college and entered a leading company in Silvercrest together after graduation.

I looked up at Marcus and said softly, "Okay."

The next day, he told me that he was going back to discuss our marriage with his mother.

I was so touched because I never expected he would pay more attention to such a critical thing in our lives.

So, I also went back home with this exciting news. My parents were so thrilled to know that I was pregnant. They immediately decided to invite Marcus' parents to come and discuss the wedding.

I smiled and said, "Dad, Marcus will take me back to meet his parents tomorrow, and then I will bring him back to see you."

My mother, Sherry Fisher, rolled her eyes at my dad, Smith Moore, and said, "Calm down. Come on, Jasmine, let's buy some gifts for Marcus' parents."

After all, it was the first time for both our parents to meet each other, and we were sure to prepare some wonderful gifts for them.

Sherry took me straight to the largest shopping mall in the city and bought a bottle of vintage wine.

Marcus mentioned once that Amanda liked jewelry, so Sherry specially picked out a high-quality ice-type jade bracelet for her.

When we returned with the gifts, he had already returned.

Seeing the pile of gifts in my hands, his eyes lit up. "Jasmine, my mother told me to take you back tomorrow."

"Is your mother easy to get along with?" I asked him with a smile as I put down the gifts.

Freezing for a second, Marcus said, "She is a very good person. It was not easy for her to take care of me when I was growing up. When we get married, I can have a helper to repay her kindness."

My hand holding the gift froze. His words sounded a little weird.

Before I could think about it, Marcus told me to have dinner, and I found there was a table of my favorite food.

I nodded and ignored the weird feelings in my heart. During these years, Marcus always took good care of me and even took charge of cooking.

At the next dawn, Marcus urged me to get up. "Hurry up, Jasmine! Mom asked us to go back now."

I opened my eyes blearily and looked at the time. It was 5 o'clock, and it would only take us two hours to drive to his house.

But thinking that his mother might want to see us earlier, I got up and followed him to get dressed. It was exactly 7 o'clock when we arrived at his house.

Someone answered the door, and when Amanda saw me, she put on a courtesy smile. "You must be Jasmine Moore. Come in.]

The weirdness struck me again, but I suppressed it and greeted her warmly, putting the gifts on a table.

Glancing at the gifts, she said calmly, "How thoughtful you are!"

Her attitude totally confused me, and I looked at Marcus for help. He just looked back, asking me to be more tolerant.

So, I comforted myself that I would live with him in the future, not his family.

Unexpectedly, before I sat down, Amanda handed me an apron and said, "Jasmine, the breakfast in my family is always diversified, including milk, scrambled eggs, roast toast and so on."

"So, why don't you show us how capable you are of cooking? You will have to cook for my son when you get married, after all," she added.

It was like a boom in my head. Holding the apron, I really didn't anticipate the reason Amanda insisted on asking us to come so early was to let me cook breakfast for her.

I pressed my lips reluctantly, but before I could say something back, Marcus nodded on my behalf. "Jasmine is an outstanding cook. Just wait for the most wonderful breakfast you have ever had!"

After saying that, he pulled me into the kitchen and held my hands with guilt. "Jasmine, that's how my mother treats everyone. Don't be angry, okay? Do it for me like what I always do for you..."

I could read his embarrassment from his face and nodded in silence. In order to free him from this dilemma, I compromised, flipping the recipe and cooking several dishes.

I thought she would be satisfied after I listened to her order to cook this meal.

But her reaction broke my naive wish as she frowned so exaggeratedly that the muscle between her eyebrows could almost kill a fly.

"Jasmine, it tastes like shit! How can you be a housewife like this? Haven't your parents ever taught you how to cook?"

The corner of my mouth couldn't help twitching as I put down the fork speechlessly.

In fact, she was right because the housekeeper would cook for us.

Although I seldom cook, I still had some common sense in cooking. I learned it step by step by following the recipe. The food tasted fine to me, though it couldn't be compared to what a Michelin chef would make.

It really puzzled me why Amanda was so mean to me.

Marcus started pursuing me first. We met for the first time when I had a blackout due to low sugar blood on my return to school after a vacation. To some extent, he saved me.

Later, I got to know more about him through his Twitter. He was from the university across from mine.

At that time, Marcus was still a little timid to ask me nervously if I minded that he was from an ordinary second-class university.

His question amused me since there was no reason for a student from a renowned university to look down upon whoever came from an inferior university.

Only then did he feel relieved and began to pursue me officially.

Considering our family background, I paid most of every bill since we began to see each other.

That was because I accidentally saw him eating instant noodles for a month in order to buy me a great birthday gift.

For the sake of his self-esteem, I did not tell him exactly how wealthy my family was. Instead, I just said my family ran a small business and always liked to give me more pocket money.

Back to reality, Marcus held my hand under the table. Looking at him and Amanda, I brought out a little box from my bag despite the uncomfortable feelings.

I said, "Marcus told me you like jewelry, so I bought a jade bracelet for you."

Taking a brief glance at what was inside the box, Amanda put the box down with a disdainful sneer and snorted. "Jasmine, I like gold, not this kind of plastic fake."

The shock prevented me from uttering a word. This ice-type jade bracelet cost almost six hundred thousand dollars, which could buy a bunch of gold necklaces and bracelets.

What appalled me more was Marcus' words. He blamed me, "Jasmine, remember to bring a gold one next time. I don't care if you wear a fake in usual times, but you can't do this to my mother."

Looking at my emerald bracelet on my wrist worth more than a billion dollars, I really ran out of words.

My parents were low-key and didn't like flashy products. So, instead of choosing gold accessories, they preferred to buy some jade. According to Smith, the logo of luxury was too ostentatious, so they only wore tailor-made clothes.

Marcus' words pulled me out of my thoughts again.

"Mom, don't be angry. Jasmine definitely didn't do it on purpose. I'll ask her to buy you a gold bracelet next time," he said.
