Chapter 1

My husband's sister had always been hostile to me.

But he unconditionally sided with her.

Initially, I thought she was just having a childish temper.

However, later investigations revealed that she was not his biological sister at all, but his long-desired lover!

At the moment when I was about to enter the operating room, my husband Yaakov's recently returned sister got into a car accident.

He panicked and left me behind to rush to her side.

Although I felt a sense of disappointment, I wasn't angry. After all, she was his sister, and it was only natural to check on her in times of trouble.

When I woke up again after the surgery, there was only Yaakov's assistant by my side. Seeing me awake, he approached with joy and concern, saying, "Mrs. Quinn, you're awake!"

Still under the influence of anesthesia, I weakly asked, "Hasn't Yaakov come back yet?"

His expression froze for a second, then quickly replaced with a smile as he said, "Mrs. Quinn, don't worry, Mr. Quinn should be here soon. He specifically told me to take good care of you."

I didn't have the energy to think too much at that moment. My mouth felt dry, and my head was heavy. I didn't want to trouble him, so I had to endure it.

After a long time, Yaakov finally returned. He held my hand with a look of deep concern and asked about my condition. Looking into his face, my inner defenses completely dropped, and I said in a hoarse voice, "I'm thirsty."

As I couldn't drink water within five hours after the surgery, he hurriedly searched for cotton swabs and moistened my lips with water, allowing me to take small sips.

Just as he finished, his phone rang again. I didn't know what was said on the other end, but it made him frown. Then he said in a cold voice, "I'll be there right away."

Why did he have to leave again?

He hung up the phone. And when he looked at me, he regained his gentle expression and comforted me, saying, "Wanda, I'm sorry, there's a situation with Yana that requires me to go over immediately. Can you just rest and wait for me?"

"What happened?" I frowned, feeling worried too.

"Yana's not doing well. She may have been frightened and refused medical treatment, so I need to go there."

Seeing his anxious face, I also relaxed and said, "Go ahead, and be careful."

He left in a hurry, and I stared at the ceiling for a long time.

It was known that Yaakov had a sister named Yana, but in the year since I married him, I had never met her and knew very little about her. According to Yaakov's family, she was sent abroad for rehabilitation due to her poor health.

And now, she suddenly returned to the country for reasons unknown.

In the middle of the night, Yaakov tiptoed into my ward. I turned on the bedside light, which scared him.

He took off his suit jacket and walked towards me with a tired smile. "Why aren't you asleep? Are you feeling uncomfortable? Should I call the doctor?"

After the effects of the anesthesia had worn off, I had already recovered quite a bit. I propped myself up with my hands and smiled at him. "I couldn't sleep, waiting for you to come back."

He lifted the covers and sat beside me, pulling me into his embrace. He lightly rubbed his chin against my hair and said in a hoarse voice, "I'm sorry."

"How is Yana?" I asked. At that moment, I could clearly sense a momentary stiffness in his body. Immediately, he casually replied, "Nothing serious, just need to be hospitalized for a few days for observation."

I nodded in response.

"Wanda..." He hesitated, struggling to find the right words.

"What's wrong?" I rarely saw him in this state.

"I want to wait until you are discharged from the hospital and bring Yana back to live with us. After all, she is not emotionally stable right now, and I am worried..."

"Sure, she is your sister, and naturally, she becomes my sister too. And we should take care of her." I readily agreed. It wasn't a big deal after all.

He rubbed my head and looked grateful. "Thank you for being so understanding. Marrying you is my blessing."

I chuckled and playfully punched him. "You're realizing that just now!"

Chapter 2

It was just a routine surgery for gastroenteritis, so I was discharged from the hospital after a few days.

As I walked out of the hospital doors, Yaakov's car happened to be there to pick me up and take me home.

However, there was another woman sitting in the passenger seat.

She had fair and clean skin, with timid eyes that made her resemble a startled little rabbit.

"Wanda, this is Yana." Yaakov got out of the car and ran to my side, introducing her to me.

Yana, on the other hand, nervously gripped the car window and looked at me with apprehension.

"Yana, this is your sister-in-law."

She blinked her innocent eyes and cautiously said, "Hello."

I frowned slightly. Did the car accident affect her brain?

However, I still greeted her in a friendly manner, "Hello, Yana. Nice to meet you."

She pursed her lips, nodded, and retracted her head into the car.

"Please bear with her. She has been through a lot of trauma, so she might not react immediately." Yaakov interjected, trying to smooth things over.

I smiled and shook my head. I turned to look at him and asked, "I sit in the back seat?"

Before, I was the only one who could sit in Yaakov's passenger seat.

He was stunned for two seconds, then he apologized and explained. "Wanda, I'm sorry, Yana was afraid to sit in the back alone, so I let her take the front seat."

Seeing his troubled expression and feeling reluctant myself, I could only laugh it off and say, "Just kidding, she is more important."

After saying that, I opened the car door and sat in the back seat.

I sat silently in the back seat, watching their interactions as if I were an outsider.

Yana seemed excited, looking around and occasionally sticking her hand out of the window to feel the wind. However, Yaakov would quickly reach over and pull her hand back, lowering his voice to scold her. "You're already grown up, don't stick your hand out like that, it's dangerous."

Despite the seemingly stern lecture, I could sense a hint of indulgence in his tone.

Yana would playfully respond, "I know, Yaakov."

Her lively demeanor was completely different from the timid appearance earlier.

My intuition made me uneasy, but I didn't want to jump to the worst conclusions about people, especially considering she was Yaakov's sister.

When we got out of the car, Yaakov took a wheelchair from the trunk and then opened the passenger door.

He gently lifted Yana out, and only then did I realize that her legs were injured in the car accident, temporarily limiting her mobility.

Yaakov told all the servants to take good care of Yana but seemed to have forgotten about me, who had just been discharged too.

However, at that moment, our nanny Wendy quietly came over to me and softly asked, "Mrs. Quinn, are you feeling better?"

A warm feeling swept over me, and I nodded. "Much better."

"Then please go upstairs and rest. I've prepared nutritious soup for you, and I'll bring it up to you shortly."

Perhaps it was just my illusion, but in that moment, I felt like even a stranger cared more about me than my own husband.

After informing Yaakov, I turned and headed upstairs, while he remained busy attending to Yana's needs.

After a long time, he finally returned to our bedroom.

Although he came to check on my condition, he kept mentioning Yana. I suddenly interrupted him, pretending to smile teasingly. "How come I never realized you were so nagging before?"

He was stunned for a moment, and when he looked at me, there was a hint of embarrassment in his eyes.

Then, he came over, held my hand, and whispered, "I think it's because there is no other girl in the world who makes me feel as reassured as you do."

It sounded very cheesy, but I found myself enjoying it.

Chapter 3

Yaakov didn't go to work for several days, just to stay at home and take care of us.

Under his arrangements, Yana was well taken care of at home, and her personality gradually became more cheerful. She also became more familiar with me in front of Yaakov compared to when we first met.

However, the one thing I couldn't understand was that she never called my name.

It made me start to wonder if she hadn't fully accepted me yet. But every time I expressed this concern to Yaakov, he would reassure me, saying, "She might not be used to it yet, and she has been living abroad for a long time, so she's not familiar with you. Don't be too picky with her. She's just a kid. I will talk to her about it."

But at twenty-three years old, could she still be considered a kid?

I had almost recovered from my illness, and it was time for me to return to work at the company. Just as I was about to leave, I happened to come across Yana in the living room. I walked over and greeted her, but she didn't respond to me.

Wendy, who was standing nearby, approached and reminded her. Only then did she turn around, smiling at me and saying, "Sorry, I didn't hear you."

But I could feel the impatience in her eyes.

"It was so loud, I heard it..." Another maid nearby spoke up quietly.

Whether she was intentional or not, I didn't care. All I could do was fulfill my responsibilities and take care of her until she recovered, and then she could disappear from my life.

I still maintained a kind expression and said, "I'm going to the office now. Take good care of yourself at home."

She gave a polite smile and turned her wheelchair away, unwilling to say another word to me.

Her attitude was quite interesting, friendly towards me in front of Yaakov, but lacking even basic patience when we were alone together.

It seemed she didn't know that if it weren't for me, she wouldn't even have the opportunity to stand here and throw tantrums at me.

——

When I came home in the evening, I heard Yaakov's voice saying, "Be more gentle."

I followed the sound and walked towards the guest room. Peeking through the crack in the door, I saw a doctor crouching down, preparing to massage Yana's calf. However, as soon as he touched her, she gasped and tightly bit her lip, showing signs of intense pain.

Yaakov, who was standing aside, frowned and blamed the doctor for being too rough.

Yana clung to his clothes, looking at him with a pitiful expression, saying, "Yaakov, I'm scared of the pain..."

He pursed his lips, sighing helplessly. "Let me do it."

Then, he knelt down on one knee, gently placing her leg on his own knee, and carefully followed the doctor's guidance to massage it. I had never seen this side of him before, even when I was sick, he had never been so gentle and meticulous.

At that moment, a smile started to spread across Yana's face.

"I didn't expect you to be more professional than the doctor." I pushed open the door and walked in, maintaining a smile on my face despite feeling displeased.

This was a skill I had developed over the years in both the family and business circles. The more turmoil in my heart, the more I needed to display a calm and composed demeanor.

When Yana saw me, her smile froze on her face, and Yaakov also stopped his actions, looking at me with surprise.

"You're back." She put on an innocent expression again.

"Weren't you supposed to call me when you're done, so I can come pick you up?" Yaakov stood up and calmly approached me.

I smiled and waved my phone in the air. "I called you already, but your phone was turned off."

He raised an eyebrow in astonishment and asked incredulously, "Really?"

Then he patted himself all over, searching for his phone. At that moment, Yana lifted his phone and said, "Yaakov, you forgot. You left your phone with me earlier."

Then she glanced at me apologetically and said, "I'm sorry, Yaakov was too busy taking care of me and didn't have time to check his phone. It's my fault for not noticing that it was turned off, and I apologize for any inconvenience it caused you."

After saying this, she lowered her head in self-blame.

I could see through her manipulative act easily.

I shrugged indifferently, took Yaakov's hand, and scolded him playfully. "You didn't even answer my calls. I'll teach you a lesson tonight."

He rubbed my nose with a smile, and replied with a smile. "Whatever you want to do, Madam."

I glanced at Yana and saw her looking at us with a strange smile, her fists clenched tightly.

My gaze turned cold.

As a sister, she had crossed the line.
