Chapter 2
Three days ago, Luis said he would come to witness my nomination.
The forum day was his grandma's birthday.
So we agreed to go back together after the forum.
However, Luis broke his promise to attend the forum. Now he was even asking me why I hadn't gone back yet.
If he hadn't said he would come, I would have arranged a car in advance.
He promised me first, but he went to his new girlfriend's movie signing ceremony.
Now he blamed me for being late for Grandma's birthday.
I stayed in the institute for ten years.
The dean told me that I would be promoted to deputy director at this forum conference.
It had been two hours since the forum ended, but I didn't receive any notifications.
I knew the promotion was ruined.
I held back my tears, and the corners of my mouth couldn't stop trembling.
On the other end of the phone, Luis said impatiently, "It's so annoying. I'll come pick you up now."
I didn't want him to come because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to control my temper.
In the White family, only Luis' grandma Jenny White was kind to me.
So I didn't want to miss her birthday party.
After thanking the hotel receptionist, I ran to the side of the road to wait for Luis.
I waited for him for two hours.
I sent him messages every half hour.
[Where are you?]
But Luis didn't reply to me.
As I laughed at myself, I walked for two hours in high heels and finally got down the mountain.
The taxi app showed that there were no available vehicles nearby.
I walked to the bus stop and took the bus home.
At seven o'clock in the evening, it was the evening rush hour when people got off work. The crowded bus was filled with the stench of sweat.
I stood for two hours and took three buses.
When I got home, it was ten o'clock in the evening.
As soon as I entered the door, I collapsed on the ground. I was so hungry that my stomach was cramping. I felt weak all over, and my feet were rubbed so hard that they were bleeding.
I took out a bag of dry bread from the refrigerator to eat.
At this time, I got a notification on my phone.
[I met Claire and her boyfriend at a convenience store.]
I clicked on it.
[Today, when I was in a convenience store, I ran into Mr. Luis White. He was choosing band-aids and didn't notice me. Hearing his anxious and concerned tone on the phone, I guessed that the person on the other end was Claire. Sure enough, Claire posted a photo in the fan chat group, and her little finger was scratched.]
[Such a small injury can make Mr. Luis White so nervous. He is so romantic and loves Lily so much. I believe in love again!]
There were many comments below, and most of the people wished them happiness.
I shook my shoulders and laughed. Later, I covered my eyes and cried.
I thought, "Luis, if you don't want to pick me up, just tell me.
Why did you give me hope and then let me down?"
After crying for a while, I wiped my tears and sniffed.
I commented: [It's funny that someone likes such a bad man.]
I received several messages on WhatsApp.
In the family chat group, there was a photo of Grandma's birthday party.
The last message was sent by Luis.
Luis: [Grandma, Phoebe is tired after winning the award today. I will take her home first. We will give you a birthday present another day.]
He used me as an excuse again.
Last time, he gave his ex-girlfriend 20 million dollars to get her to have an abortion.
When his grandfather Walter White asked about the expense, he said I wanted to buy an apartment.
To get his friend out of prison, he lied that that man was my friend and he did that for me.
Over the years, my reputation in the White family had changed from a gentle girl to a trouble-making mad woman.
I instantly got angry.
Since he treated me like that, I wouldn't tolerate him anymore.
I sent several messages to the family chat group.
[Don't use me as an excuse. I waited for you on the roadside for two hours but didn't see you. You're with your star girlfriend, right? Don't use me as a shield.]
[Since you dare to do that, why don't you dare to admit it? You've done this many times. Are you still a man?]
[Grandma, I will go home this weekend and celebrate your birthday with you.]
Chapter 3
Luis sent me a message: [What's wrong with you? Why are you so angry?]
I laughed out of anger. Did he mean I was unreasonable?
[I didn't pick you up because my girlfriend was injured. Please be considerate.]
As I threw my phone on the table, I covered my aching stomach with tears in my eyes.
What was wrong with him?
He said he would come and pick me up, but now he blamed me for not being considerate enough.
After a while, I picked up the phone on the ground.
I called my father.
After the call was connected, I choked up and said, "Dad, I can't stand it anymore. I want a divorce."
I took a day off and stayed at home.
Luis hadn't come back for two days. He often didn't come back. This big house was empty, and I had lived here for eight years.
I should have gotten used to it long ago.
At first, I would wait for him until the middle of the night.
If he was in a good mood the next day, he would reply to my text message. If he was in a bad mood, he wouldn't do anything.
Later, he hooked up with more and more women.
I became numb.
I didn't wait for him anymore.
If I waited for such a bad man, it would be a waste of my life.
This time, I must get a divorce.
On the day I went to work, I received many strange looks along the way.
Ignoring them, I worked normally.
At noon, my assistant came to the workbench and patted me on the shoulder.
"Ms. Moore, your husband is at the door."
Luis? Why was he here?
I frowned and suddenly remembered that I blocked his WhatsApp the day before yesterday.
I took out my phone and saw a few text messages from him.
[Why did you block me? If you want me to coax you, just tell me. Phoebe, is this the only trick you can use?]
[Can you learn something new?]
[You used to be very sensible, but now you are a jealous woman.]
Luis' words were unpleasant.
I didn't reply and blocked his phone number.
"Tell him I'm not free at noon. I'll be free in the evening."
Since he stood me up before, I would also let him taste what it felt like.
The assistant came back.
He told me that Luis said he was busy tonight and booked a table at the old place at noon.
"I see."
Luis did this every time. He would make me angry and then coax me casually.
He was confident that I would buy into his tricks.
That was ridiculous.
After getting off work, I went to the restaurant alone.
Through the huge floor-to-ceiling windows, I could see the beautiful buildings across the river.
The spaghetti here was delicious and expensive.
I ate one and paid the bill for everyone in the restaurant.
I hadn't spent much of Luis' money in these years, but I was known as an extravagant woman.
If I didn't spend his money, I would not live up to the title.
The lawyer sent me the prepared divorce agreement.
I sent it to Luis.
[Let's get a divorce. I'll give you a week to come back and sign it.]
The female star posted an Instagram.
It was a photo of a meteor shower and two hands clasping together.
I recognized one of the hands, which was wearing the wedding ring that Luis and I wore when we got married.
[The meteor shower happens once every 4000 years, and I saw it with the man I love.]
Luis said he was busy in the evening and asked me to have lunch with him at noon.
It turned out that he wanted to watch the meteor shower with his new girlfriend.
He loved his new girlfriend so much.
Feeling furious, I slammed the table and yelled, "Waiter, I'll pay for all the bills tonight!"
After dinner, I walked along the river.
When I got home, I found the lights on.
There were two pairs of shoes at the entrance.
They were a pair of men's shoes and a pair of high heels.
I walked in and saw Luis hugging Claire on the sofa in the living room.
He was drunk, and his cheeks were flushed. He kept kissing Claire.
Claire was quite sober. Seeing me standing at the corner, she pushed Luis away.
This was the first time I met her in person.
She looked better than the photos online.
She had long curly hair, a delicate small face, and a good figure, looking very charming.
She was indeed a female star.
Claire walked towards me and stretched out her hand with a smile. "You are Mr. Luis White's wife, right? He is drunk, and I just took him home. Please don't get me wrong."
If there wasn't provocation and complacency in her eyes when she said this, I would believed it.
"It's okay. I've sent the divorce agreement to him on WhatsApp. When he wakes up, please remind him to check it. I'm going back to my room."
Maybe Claire didn't expect my reaction, and her smile froze on her face.
Walking into the kitchen, I took out a bottle of yogurt from the refrigerator and prepared to go to my room.
Claire stopped me.
She showed a polite and apologetic smile. "Could you please make some food for Mr. Luis White?"
I took a sip of the yogurt and raised my eyebrows. "I'm his wife, not a nanny.
"Shouldn't the mistresses do this for him?"
