Chapter 2

To avoid meeting my family, I should have come to visit Arabella late at night.

However, maybe because I was sick, my desire to see Arabella had grown stronger. So, I ran to the door of her ward as fast as I could.

Just as I was panting heavily with my hands on my hips, the door in front of me suddenly opened.

The next second...

A merciless slap landed on my face, and I uncontrollably fell backward.

With a bang, my head hit the ground.

In an instant, my sight turned pitch black.

I felt it hurt very much.

Cold sweat covered my forehead, and my lips turned pale.

I was no longer as healthy as I was before. Now, when my emaciated body hit the ground, I felt as if it was about to fall apart at any moment.

After a short while, I regained my sight and saw the scene in front of me.

Helga looked at me with disgust. She raised her hand, wanting to slap me again. But Aleck stopped her.

"Mom..." I stammered, trying to evoke her pity.

But that was something that would never happen again in my life.

"Don't call me Mom. I'm not your mom.

"You jinx! A troublemaker! Why did you come here? Why was it not you who became a vegetable..."

Aleck interrupted, "Enough. Stop it. Calm down."

He tried to calm down Helga, who was on the verge of rage. Meanwhile, he asked me to leave.

"Lena, you should leave and never come back. No one wants to see you."

At this time, Helga shouted, "Why should I stop? I shouldn't have given birth to her. Arabella has suffered so much because of this jinx. She ruined Arabella's future."

Aleck pulled Helga into the ward, and the door was closed again.

In the past five years, I would come here every night.

Occasionally, I would run into Helga, and scenes like this were very common to see.

At first, I would argue with Helga, but all I would get in return were countless cold stares, insults, and even physical abuse.

Over time, I gave up.

I didn't expect their trust, nor did I expect their love.

I had always understood that I wasn't welcome in this family.

If I could, I wouldn't want to be born into this world.

After all, from childhood to adulthood, Arabella was the only one who had been good to me.

Helga didn't appreciate my abilities and couldn't stand my rebellious personality.

She even treated Johnny, the adopted child, better than me.

But Arabella often said to me, "Lena.

"Being yourself is more important than anything else. No matter what you are like, I like you."

It was Arabella's love that supported me to move forward in this desperate world.

I wanted to wait for Arabella to wake up.

"Are you crying? I thought you were a heartless person. Pretending to be pitiful in front of me is useless.

"No one wants to watch your lame show. Do you think you can wash away your sins by crying in front of your sister's ward every day? Every second I spend with you makes me sick."

Johnny's angry shouts kept entering my ears.

Only then did I come back from my thoughts.

"I cried?"

I reached out and touched my face. Then, I realized that I was already in tears.

I also noticed Johnny's existence. He was now standing in front of me in a suit.

Aleck was getting old. Since Arabella had an accident, he had turned grey overnight and was unable to manage the business alone. So, he directly handed the Byrne Group over to Johnny.

Somehow, I couldn't remember what Johnny looked like when he first came to my family.

I only vaguely remember that he used to be a timid and cowardly child, always hiding behind my kind-hearted sister because of my teasing.

Now, Johnny looked imposing, and his previous timid look was nowhere to be found.

Now, whenever outsiders mentioned the Byrne family, they always praised Johnny's abilities, lamented the sudden accident that happened to Arabella, and ridiculed my wickedness.

When Arabella and Johnny were famous for their outstanding achievements, some peers secretly mocked me for not being like my parent's child.

They said I was spoiled and mediocre, just a useless eye candy.

But at that time, Johnny, who had never had a good impression of me, would join forces with me to teach those people a lesson.

Gradually, they knew about my retaliatory personality.

And after that, no one dared to speak ill of me anymore.

At the same time, Johnny's tall figure had been engraved in my mind. I began to realize that I had fallen for him.

Since then, I had often tried to get close to Johnny and be nice to him.

Although Johnny was annoyed by my behavior, our relationship had improved a lot.

But after the accident, everyone changed.

No one would stand up for me anymore.

I didn't want to argue with Johnny, so I turned around and wanted to leave.

But Johnny stopped me.

"What's that attitude? I'm talking to you. So, speak to me!"

Johnny was angered by my attitude, and his grip tightened unconsciously.

"Ah!"

Even though my pain tolerance had increased over the past five years, Johnny used full force this time.

And I couldn't help but cry out in pain.

Hearing my cry, Johnny immediately released his grip and instinctively lowered his head to check on my wrist.

My wrist was swollen and looked like it had been severely injured. Johnny subconsciously wanted to take me to see a doctor.

But I didn't believe he really wanted to help me, so I immediately pulled my wrist out of his hand and ran away in panic.

Chapter 3

The pain in my wrist was piercing.

But I ignored it, ran straight back to my small rented house, and held the Winnie pillow that Arabella had given me tightly in my arms.

In fact, Arabella had given me many precious gifts.

But after Arabella had an accident, Helga kicked me out and threw all my things into the trash.

It took me half a day to find this old pillow at the dump.

This was the only thing I had now.

I buried my face in the pillow, as if only in this way could I gain some peace and comfort.

Suddenly, someone knocked on the door.

The constant knocking woke me up from my sleep, and I suddenly realized that I was actually sleeping on the floor.

The injury in my wrist was still untreated.

But I didn't care.

I was short of money and didn't want to waste it on treating my wrist. After all, treating Alzheimer's disease required a lot of money.

When I opened the door, I saw Johnny.

Johnny's decent attire made him completely out of place in this environment.

There was a disgusted look on his face.

"Why did you run away? What a crappy place! Do you live here? It took me a lot of time to find you."

As Johnny spoke, he walked up and grabbed me, wanting to take me to see a doctor.

Hearing Johnny's complaints, I felt a little bitter in my heart.

The Byrne family's business was vast. Thus, it was very easy for Johnny to find someone if he wanted.

Just like this time, he found my place in just two hours. But actually, he had been ignoring me for the past five years.

Taking advantage of his inattention, I slipped into the room and shut Johnny out.

Johnny angrily pounded on my door, causing some wall paint to come off.

"Lena, do you really think I have plenty of time to waste here? If you don't come out, fine. You don't need to see a doctor then. It's none of my business anyway."

Johnny's voice was so loud that it annoyed the old lady next door. So, she came out and accused Johnny.

Hearing this, I suddenly felt better in my heart.

Gradually, the sound outside my door faded, and the surroundings returned to their usual silence. Somehow, a sense of loneliness surged up in my heart.

Two months passed.

During this time, I still commuted between home, the hospital, and the new workplace.

The treatment effect was average, and my condition worsened.

I often forgot where I was and what I had done just now.

So, I started to keep a memo.

My temper became worse. A few days ago, I even mistook my boss for a stranger.

Because I was afraid at that time, I beat my boss up. As a result, I lost a decent-paying job.

In order to make a living, I found a job as a cook in a cafeteria.

My new boss was very nice. I honestly told her that I had Alzheimer's disease, but she still agreed to take me in and let me do some simple and easy work.

The memo reminded me that today was Arabella's birthday.

So, I used the money I had saved and bought a beautiful pen as a birthday gift for Arabella.

The bus had arrived.

When I was about to get on the bus, Johnny, who I hadn't seen for a long time, suddenly appeared.

His sports car cut in and blocked everyone's way.

Complaints followed.

But Johnny just rolled down the car window and calmly spoke to me.

"Get in."

The bus driver kept shouting behind me.

I had no choice but to get in Johnny's car.

Because Arabella was still lying in bed in a coma, Johnny was in a bad mood and drove fast all the way.

I held onto the handle above my head in fear.

My stomach went upset, and I vomited as soon as I got out of the car.

Johnny didn't wait for me. After parking the car, he went straight to Arabella's ward.

I didn't care about Johnny's bad attitude. I happily arrived outside Arabella's ward and hid in a corner.

I planned to wait for my parents to finish celebrating Arabella's birthday and find the right time to put my gift on Arabella's bedside table.

But at this moment, I heard Connie's voice.

Anger washed over me, making me lose my mind.

I rushed into Arabella's ward, grabbed Connie's hair fiercely, and tried to drag her out.

It happened so fast that neither Connie's parents could react in time. But Helga did, and she immediately kicked me out.

With a loud bang, my body hit the chair, causing it to crack.

Instantly, blood filled my mouth and throat.

Pain surged in my heart.

But I seemed to be unable to feel the pain, using both hands and feet to crawl up as if possessed.

I kept shouting, "How dare she! She can't stay here!"

Connie pretended to be scared and hid behind Johnny.

Johnny frowned and blocked my way, saying coldly, "Lena, calm down. She's your sister."

While comforting Connie, Connie's parents remarked, "She's crazy. She must've got some mental illness."

This scene kept stimulating my brain. I screamed and then ran out of the ward in a daze.

The pen I bought for Arabella was left there, but it was already broken.
