Chapter 2

The sterile scent of iodine and bleached sheets hit me as I opened my eyes.

I was in a private room at Seattle General. My left leg was encased in a heavy plaster cast, elevated on a stack of pillows. An IV dripped clear fluid into my arm, and the steady, rhythmic swoosh of a fetal heart monitor echoed in the quiet room.

The door opened, and a doctor in dark blue scrubs walked in, reviewing a tablet.

"Mrs. Davies. I'm Dr. Aris. Glad to see you awake." He stepped to the side of the bed. "You have a severe compound fracture in your left tibia. We¡¯ve set the bone. You'll be off that leg for at least eight weeks."

"The baby?" I asked. My voice was raspy from the dust.

Dr. Aris offered a tight, professional smile. "The baby is remarkably resilient. We detected some early signs of distress, and you are dealing with a threatened miscarriage due to the extreme physical trauma and stress. However, the heartbeat is currently strong. You need absolute bed rest and zero stress for the next few weeks."

"Thank you."

He hesitated, looking toward the empty chairs in the corner of the room. "The nurses said you arrived alone. We tried to contact your emergency contact¡ªyour husband, Liam Davies? It went straight to voicemail."

I looked at the clock on the wall. It was 3:00 AM. Five hours since the restaurant collapsed. Liam was a Search and Rescue captain. He had his phone on him at all times. He wasn't answering because he was busy.

"He's occupied," I said. "Could you pass me my phone from the evidence bag?"

Dr. Aris handed me the plastic bag containing my ruined clutch. "I'll send the nurse in to check your vitals shortly. Rest, Mrs. Davies."

When the door clicked shut, I pulled my phone out. The screen was cracked, but it powered on.

Zero missed calls from Liam. Zero text messages.

I opened my contacts and tapped the favorite at the very top of the list. It rang twice before she picked up.

"It's three in the morning, Chloe. Someone better be dead or in jail," Victoria¡¯s sharp voice crackled through the speaker.

"The restaurant we were at collapsed," I said. My voice was steady. Too steady.

Silence on the other end. Then, the sound of bedsheets rustling and feet hitting a hardwood floor. Victoria¡¯s tone instantly shifted from annoyed sister to the ruthless corporate divorce attorney she was known to be.

"Are you injured? Where are you?"

"Seattle General. Broken tibia. The baby is fine, but I'm on bed rest for a threatened miscarriage."

"I'm leaving my apartment right now. Where is Liam?"

"He was there," I stated, staring blankly at the acoustic tiles on the ceiling. "He pulled Sophia out of the rubble. I was trapped under a concrete slab. He left me inside and told me he'd come back. The EMTs pulled me out ten minutes later. He's probably still with her."

A heavy, dangerous silence filled the phone line. When Victoria finally spoke, her voice was absolute ice.

"Did you cry?"

"No."

"Good. Don't waste the hydration. Listen to me very carefully, Chloe. Do not text him. Do not call him. If he calls you, let it go to voicemail. Are you done?"

"I'm completely done."

"Okay. I will be at the hospital in twenty minutes. We are moving immediately."

"Victoria," I interrupted. "The house in Mercer Island. It was mine before we got married."

"Pre-marital asset. Placed in a trust under your name. He has no legal claim to it, despite living there for two years," Victoria rattled off instantly. "What do you want to do?"

"I want him out of it. But I don't want to see him. I don't want to fight with him. I want to disappear."

"Consider it done," Victoria said. "I'll handle the extraction. You focus on keeping my niece or nephew safe. See you in twenty."

I hung up the phone. I looked down at my left hand. The three-carat diamond ring Liam had given me felt heavy and restrictive. I twisted it off my finger, the metal sliding easily over my skin. I placed it on the rolling tray next to my bed.

The woman who walked into that restaurant tonight was dead, crushed under the weight of concrete and a broken marriage.

Chapter 3

Victoria did not waste time.

By 6:00 AM, while I was still hooked up to monitors in the hospital, my sister had orchestrated a military-grade operation.

Standing by my hospital bed, dressed in a sharp gray pantsuit and holding a tablet, Victoria directed the chaos.

"Yes, Marcus, I want everything that belongs to my sister out of that house," Victoria spoke into her headset. "Clothes, electronics, the antique vanity she inherited, her design portfolios. Leave the couch, he bought it. Leave the bed. Take all the kitchenware she purchased. I want it loaded onto the trucks by noon."

She muted the headset and looked at me. "The moving crew is at the Mercer Island house right now. They've changed the locks on the front and back doors. Liam¡¯s keys will no longer work."

"Where is he?" I asked, sipping water from a plastic cup.

Victoria tapped her tablet, pulling up a tracking application. "I had my private investigator run his plates. His truck is currently parked outside Sophia's townhouse complex. He's been there since 1:00 AM."

A small, bitter smile touched my lips. Of course he was.

"The hospital is discharging you at 10:00 AM," Victoria continued, efficiently organizing the paperwork on my bed. "Dr. Aris agreed to authorize a private medical transport. I am not taking you to my place¡ªhe knows where I live, and he will show up demanding answers."

"Where am I going?"

"Oakwood."

I looked up. Oakwood was a high-end, highly secure private recovery clinic nestled in the forests of the Cascade Mountains, an hour outside the city. It was usually reserved for celebrities recovering from plastic surgery or wealthy executives needing absolute privacy.

"Victoria, that costs a fortune."

"You have a fortune," she reminded me sharply. "Your interior design firm netted seven figures last year, Chloe. You are the sole owner. You have liquid assets, and you are going to use them to protect yourself and that baby. Oakwood has gated security, private cottages, and round-the-clock nursing staff to monitor your bed rest. Liam will never get past the front gate."

My phone vibrated on the bedside table.

The cracked screen lit up with Liam¡¯s name. It was the first time he had called since the collapse. It was 8:30 AM.

I stared at the name. Victoria reached out and declined the call.

Immediately, a text message popped up.

Liam: Hey. The police finally let us leave the scene a few hours ago. Sophia was having severe panic attacks, I had to stay with her to make sure she didn't go into shock. I'm heading home to shower and then I'll come find you. Did you make it home?

He didn't even know if I had been admitted to a hospital. He assumed I had simply dusted myself off, taken a cab home, and waited for him.

"Block the number," Victoria ordered.

I picked up the phone. I pressed the contact info, scrolled to the bottom, and hit 'Block this Caller'. Then I did the same for Sophia.

"Done."

"Good." Victoria pulled a thick manila envelope from her designer tote bag and laid it on my lap. "These are the initial filings. Petition for Dissolution of Marriage, citing irreconcilable differences. An ex parte temporary restraining order preventing him from liquidating any joint accounts, though you barely have any. And a formal cease-and-desist communication directive. Once he is served, all communication must go through my law firm."

I clicked a pen and signed my name on the lines Victoria pointed to. My handwriting was sharp, aggressive, and perfectly legible.

At 10:15 AM, two private security guards from Oakwood arrived with a transport wheelchair. They wheeled me down a restricted staff elevator to the underground parking garage, completely bypassing the main lobby where reporters or a panicked husband might be waiting.

As the black medical transport van pulled out of the hospital garage and merged onto the highway toward the mountains, I didn't look back at the city skyline.

I looked forward.
