Chapter 1
On the seventh anniversary of our secret marriage, the actor James gave the script that I had been polishing for three years to my sister Sophie.
And made me do some cheesy movie of myself doing yoga on the back of an alligator in lace underwear.
The crocodile drug was not enough, and I was immediately surrounded and bitten by three adult crocodiles.
James jumped into the pool madly to save me and was bitten on the hand.
I was pushed into the ambulance covered in blood, my life was in danger.
Margaret, who depended on me for everything, bandaged James and cried:
"We are destroying Laura's legs just to let Sophie win the award. Isn't that too much? If Laura dies like this, I won't live anymore."
James held my hand tightly and comforted Margaret: "There are still many opportunities to make it up to Laura, but Sophie only has one month to live."
"Only by destroying Laura, the hot candidate, can Sophie win the Global Film Festival Award and fulfill her last wish."
"Mom, don't worry. Even if Laura loses her legs, I will treat her well for the rest of her life, and she will forgive us when the time comes."
I'm clearly numb, but my heart still aches.
I also want to know how they can make it up to me, but I don't have the chance.
Because the one who was sick was not her, but me.
Every day that they all revolved around Sophie, I was silently counting down to my death.
……
When I woke up, James grabbed my hand excitedly.
Margaret wiped away tears with red eyes.
I wanted to turn around, but I couldn't move.
The quilt covering him slipped off as he struggled.
Sophie looked at me, screamed loudly, and then fainted on the sofa.
James and Margaret rushed to hug her.
Only then did I see that my legs were cut off at the thighs, leaving only two empty trouser legs tied in a knot.
In the reflection on the TV, a scar as winding as a centipede covered half of my head.
After Sophie fainted, Margaret's expression changed immediately.
She turned her head to look at me, pointing at me and cursing angrily and helplessly.
"Why are you lifting the quilt for no reason?"
"My Sophie was frightened by your bloody appearance when you were admitted to the hospital, and now your broken leg has frightened her to death again. I don't know what you are thinking?"
I lowered my head, like a child who had done something wrong, with tears welling up in my eyes.
James patted my shoulder gently and prepared to get up and take Sophie to see the doctor.
In seven years of marriage, I have never asked him for anything.
But now, when I close my eyes, I see the crocodile rushing towards me with its bloody mouth wide open.
I held his hand tightly and cried:
"James, can you please stay with me? I'm so scared."
James patted my hands.
"Be good Laura. I'll have plenty of time to spend with you in the future."
"But Sophie is different. She only has this month. We have to take good care of her. If we miss it, it will be gone forever."
Then he used force to pry open my fingers one by one, picked up Sophie and rushed to find a doctor.
I couldn't help crying out loud.
Sophie is his good friend.
She fainted from fright and needs someone to accompany her.
And I am just his wife who has shared the good and bad times with him for seven years.
He was just in the late stage of pancreatic cancer, his two legs were bitten off, and he had just come back from the gates of hell. He didn't need anyone to accompany him.
I originally thought that since I was obedient, sensible and hardworking, there would always be someone who loved me.
But I didn't expect that no matter how hard I tried, it was useless.
Just like before.
Seven years ago, I was banned because I was dissatisfied with the director's unspoken rules.
The pressure was so great that she shaved her head and prepared to marry her fiancé, who was also a child actor.
Chapter 2
On the wedding day, my fiancé ran away from home with my sister Sophie.
Everyone made fun of me and said I was a tomboy and no one wanted me even if I offered myself to them.
James, as the most promising male actor at that time, resolutely came on stage to propose to me.
We lived happily after marriage.
I helped him build connections and find directors and accompanied him on auditions.
In winter, we huddled in a single bed, shivering with cold, and he put my cold feet into his belly to warm them.
During the most difficult year, he was diagnosed with uremia and his bank card balance was only in the double digits.
I worked five jobs every day, from morning till night, just to raise money for his medical expenses.
After the kidney source matching was successful, I donated a kidney to him without hesitation.
Seven years have finally proven that I love him very much and he loves me too.
But it was not until now that I realized that James married me just because he didn't want me to continue to pester my fiancé and ruin Sophie's wedding.
I thought if I listened to Margaret and gave my fiancé to my sister, she would love me more.
In the end, every bit of the love I had received before had the shadow of my sister.
As long as she comes back, no matter whether it is James or Margaret, everything will no longer belong to me.
In the evening, Sophie suddenly appeared.
She was wearing a miniskirt, revealing her long, white legs, and smiled provocatively.
"You've always been defeated by me. I just pretended to cry and said I wanted a prize, but Yi and Margaret couldn't wait to destroy your legs."
"I am disgusted by the sight of a legless monster like you. I would have no face to live on if it were me."
I was so angry that I grabbed my phone and threw it at him.
I didn't hit her, but she got mad and took out a fruit knife from the drawer and stabbed me.
She scratched her left cheek, blood was flowing down, and there was a stinging pain.
I snatched the knife from her hand and held it high.
The next second, James snatched it back, hugged Sophie lovingly, and asked me what I was doing?
Sophie cried very sadly and said that I called her a vixen and threatened to break her legs and kill her.
I looked at James and shook my head.
"No."
James didn't even look at me and carefully escorted Sophie out.
Margaret heard the noise and glanced at me at the door.
She didn't ask me what happened or if it hurt.
Seeing me constantly pulling out tissues to stop the bleeding, she said in a tone that said I deserved it: "You deserved it. Who made you angry?"
She didn't even step into the door, but turned around and ran after her to comfort her sister.
As far back as I can remember, I knew that Margaret didn't love me.
She gave birth to her older sister with her rich second-generation ex-husband, and married my father after the divorce.
She always scolds my dad for not making money and complains that I eat too much and don't work.
When it was windy and rainy, Margaret would look out the window, worrying about whether her older sister, who was attending Elite Private Academy and living in a Suburban Villa with a nanny, had enough food and clothes to eat. She didn't care at all that I was wearing thin clothes and my stomach was growling with hunger.
What others can get easily, I have to work very hard to get.
But now I don't seem to want it anymore.
After a long time, James came back. He looked at me with a guilty expression.
The whole abdomen was in severe pain, and even painkillers couldn't suppress it.
Thinking of what the doctor said, I suddenly didn’t want to be angry anymore.
I said Sophie tried to hurt me with a knife.
James wasn't surprised at all.
"I know, you don't have legs, so there's no way you can get the knife from the drawer."
I picked up a pillow and threw it at him, screaming and breaking down.
"Then why do you keep saying it's my fault?"
James frowned and kept running his hands through his hair.
Chapter 3
"Laura, Sophie has a childish temper, you just need to give in to her."
"Besides, she won't be able to compete with you in the future. All our love will be given to you, and everyone will revolve around you. Just let her be, okay?"
Tears flowed uncontrollably.
But I'm sick too, why don't you let me go?
Half a year ago, I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The doctor said I could live for half a year at most, and one month at least.
Looking at James who loved me deeply and Margaret who had depended on me for seven years, I didn't know how to tell them.
I made the story I had previously written about my love experience with him into a happy love script, and prepared to film it so that they would have something to think about in the future.
This script was highly praised by industry leaders, who said it has a great chance of winning an award.
At this time, Sophie returned to Newyork to find James and Margaret, saying that she only had a month to live, and hoped that when she died, she could fulfill her childhood dream and become a famous actor.
James forced my script on her.
I knelt down and begged him, saying that I was sick and this was my dream.
He took out my diagnosis certificate from the drawer, slapped it on my face, and laughed:
"Which crew made this prop? It even has the signature of the chief physician."
"You were sick earlier or later. When Sophie came back, you said you were sick. Can't you see her like that?"
"She's almost dying, and you still want to compete with her?"
James wiped my tears with his thumb and brought me back from my memories.
He pleaded in a low voice.
"Laura, I'm so tired, can you let me rest for a while?"
"Sophie saved my life in the Alps Mountains before. There's no way I'm going to deny her a last-ditch request."
Before leaving, he came back and gave me a quick kiss on the forehead.
"Don't worry, I will make you public in a month and give you a huge wedding."
"Everything I have is yours."
"Will you wait for me?"
After I was discharged from the hospital, James bought a Suburban Villa in my name as our wedding house.
I also hired a nanny to take care of my life.
One day, I woke up with a dull pain in my chest, and then I vomited a mouthful of blood.
I panicked.
Call James.
Call Margaret.
But no one answered.
When I was about to despair, James answered the phone.
I cried in fear: "James, please come back soon, I am dying."
The other side was stunned for a long time before his angry voice rang out:
"Laura, why are you acting like a child?"
"You knew that Margaret and I were going to the playground with Sophie today, but you called to disturb us on purpose."
"If you need anything, just find a babysitter."
After saying that, he turned off the phone.
But he forgot that the nanny had to take a leave today due to some urgent matters, and he promised to come back to take care of me.
I was in so much pain that I rolled out of bed and wanted to go downstairs to take medicine.
I climbed to the stairs, but without my legs, I couldn’t go down.
The pain in my chest made me feel a little dizzy, and in an instant I rolled from the second floor to the first floor.
My whole body felt like it was cramping and my bones were being pulled out, and my front teeth were broken and my mouth was full of blood.
I finally crawled to the dining table, hoping to gain some leverage.
I accidentally pulled the tablecloth and the tableware and breakfast milk spilled all over the floor.
I completely passed out from the pain.
After waking up, James and Margaret came back.
Seeing the mess on the floor, James couldn't help but slap me.
"Why are you so ignorant? Just because I didn't get back in time, you lost your temper and smashed everything in the house?"
