Chapter 4
Charles stared at me in disbelief. "Are you sure?"
I didn't hesitate and nodded.
Over the past year, because of Camilla, we often argued intensely.
But even when I threw things, cried, or ran away from home, I had never mentioned divorce.
I cherished him and still held out hope that he could change his mind and remember our sweet moments.
But the reality proved that my repeated concessions only made him worse.
A man who had already been tainted was nothing but worthless garbage, no matter how much he was cleaned.
The once proud and arrogant Charles was also unwilling to back down when it came to divorce.
He picked up the divorce agreement and, without even reading it, flipped to the last page and signed his name.
"Elena, don't regret this."
After saying this, he called Camilla right in front of me.
"Wait for me at home. I'm coming to find you."
Watching Charles leave with determination, I felt no inner turmoil.
In the afternoon, I received a package sent by my mother.
Because of regional dietary differences, my mother worried that I might not adapt, so over the years, she often mailed me food she had prepared herself.
When I looked at those jars of hometown dishes, my eyes turned sour.
I missed my mother and wanted to go home.
I called my boss. "You previously mentioned the opportunity to transfer to the Las Estrellas headquarters. Is that still available?"
My boss sounded surprised. "Of course, with your abilities, this opportunity is yours alone."
On the fourth day of Charles being absent, I texted him, asking when he would take me to file for divorce.
He brushed me off, saying: [I'll get to it when I have time.]
I looked at Camilla's tweets. They were together every day, acting like a couple in love.
I had no idea when he referred to as having time.
I didn't expect Charles to come back that evening, with Camilla following him.
I was eating dinner, oatmeal paired with the hometown dishes my mother had made.
Charles kissed Camilla as if I didn't exist. He said he was going to the room to pack his clothes and told Camilla to wait in the living room for a while.
Camilla obediently nodded. Once Charles entered the bedroom, she began to critique the house's decor as if she were the owner.
"I don't like the color of this wall. I prefer pink.
"This sofa isn't soft enough. I want Charley to replace it.
"Your wedding photos are so outdated. I plan to go to the Maldives with Charley to take wedding photos. They will definitely look better than yours."
Chapter 5
Seeing that I ignored her, she walked over to me, dramatically covering her nose.
"What are you eating? It smells awful."
As she spoke, she picked up the jar containing my hometown dishes, looking disgusted.
I stood up and angrily said, "Give it back to me."
But she deliberately let go. The glass jar fell to the ground, shattering and spilling food everywhere.
She laughed, "Sorry, I didn't hold on tightly."
In the next moment, I raised my hand and slapped her hard across her smug face.
Camilla fell to the ground, making an exaggerated expression of pain.
Charles rushed over, carefully helping Camilla up and glaring at me with a fierce look. "Elena, apologize to Camilla right now."
"Not a chance."
My stubborn attitude completely enraged Charles.
He suddenly pushed me, and I fell, hitting my head hard against the corner of the table.
The pain caused me to lose consciousness for a moment, and when I came to, I realized blood was already seeping from my forehead.
Charles panicked and hurriedly took me to the hospital without stopping.
The attending physician in the emergency department just happened to be the same doctor who treated me during my previous hospitalization.
As she treated the wound on my forehead, she reminded me of the precautions to take when I got home.
Charles frowned while listening, "It's just a surface injury. Why does she need to rest in bed and pay attention to nutrition? She's not that delicate."
The doctor looked somewhat shocked.
"You are her husband, right?"
"Yeah."
The doctor scolded him, "She had a miscarriage last week. Didn't you know?"
Charles was completely stunned. He looked at the doctor, then at me, his voice trembling.
"Elena, you...you were really pregnant?"
