Chapter 2
Then, I saw the tweet that Camilla posted. Charles took her to the most upscale restaurant in the city and even ordered a bottle of red wine worth over ten thousand.
Charles' so-called waste of money was only aimed at me.
I should have felt disappointed and heartbroken, but I didn't.
After lying in the hospital for three days, all I wanted was to take a shower, change into clean clothes, and sleep well.
Charles didn't return until one in the morning.
He deliberately made a lot of noise, but I ignored him.
Finally, he slammed the door and went to the study.
This was a precursor to his silent treatment.
In the past, after every argument, no matter who was right or wrong, I was always the one to back down first.
I believed that couples shouldn't hold grudges, and love shouldn't be worn down.
It took me four years in college to successfully win over Charles, and I cherished our marriage.
At first, he was very gentle with me, holding me in his palm and showering me with love.
After a year of marriage, I was diagnosed with endometriosis, making it difficult to conceive.
I spent my days in tears, but Charles comforted me, saying, "Don't worry. Medical science is advanced now. Besides, I want to enjoy a few more years in our world together.
"Even if we can't have children, I will love you for the rest of my life."
At that time, I was so moved that I hugged him tightly, believing that all my years of effort were worth it.
But everything changed a year ago when his former lover Camilla came to Oceanos to seek him out.
Charles' tenderness, attentiveness, thoughtfulness, and indulgence were all directed at another woman.
He left me, who was celebrating my birthday, just to help Camilla change a light bulb in her bathroom.
He forgot our wedding anniversary but took Camilla to Disneyland.
During a movie, he abandoned me without hesitation when Camilla texted him, saying she was bored.
When I expressed my dissatisfaction to him, he said, "It's not easy for Camilla to live alone. Don't be so calculating."
As he wished, I would no longer let him see my sadness.
Chapter 3
That night, I had a dream.
A child with angel wings circled around me several times.
But I couldn't hold onto him.
With a face full of sorrow, he looked at me with tears in his eyes and slowly flew further away.
I woke up crying.
In the dark, I placed my hands on my flat abdomen, unable to stop the tears.
The baby I had longed for was gone.
The next morning, I walked out of my room with swollen red eyes and happened to run into Charles coming out of the study.
He glanced at me and mocked, "You cried? Now that you know you were wrong, you should apologize to me.
"You're jealous and resentful all day. Who can stand that?
"If you want to play the pity card to gain my attention, remember I'm not that easy to fool."
His self-righteous rambling annoyed me, so I ignored him and headed straight to the bathroom to wash up.
My indifference infuriated him. Standing at the bathroom door, he commented, "I gave you a way out, so you should comply. Don't be unreasonable. If you want me to forgive you, then go make me breakfast now."
I replied coldly, "Make it yourself."
Charles completely lost his temper. "I must have spoiled you too much. If you keep this up, let's get a divorce."
I had just finished washing my face and hung the towel up.
I glanced at him and said calmly, "Okay."
Charles paused for a few seconds, seeming to grasp the meaning behind my words.
When he realized what I was implying, he exploded with rage.
"Elena, don't think I'm just saying this. Without me, where else would tolerate you? Who else would want you?"
I took a document from the desk in the bedroom and handed it to him.
He angrily sat down on the sofa, crossing his arms. "You want to apologize? It's too late."
I tossed the document in front of him. "Sign it."
He shot a glance at it, his face turning pale.
It was the divorce agreement.
Chapter 4
Charles stared at me in disbelief. "Are you sure?"
I didn't hesitate and nodded.
Over the past year, because of Camilla, we often argued intensely.
But even when I threw things, cried, or ran away from home, I had never mentioned divorce.
I cherished him and still held out hope that he could change his mind and remember our sweet moments.
But the reality proved that my repeated concessions only made him worse.
A man who had already been tainted was nothing but worthless garbage, no matter how much he was cleaned.
The once proud and arrogant Charles was also unwilling to back down when it came to divorce.
He picked up the divorce agreement and, without even reading it, flipped to the last page and signed his name.
"Elena, don't regret this."
After saying this, he called Camilla right in front of me.
"Wait for me at home. I'm coming to find you."
Watching Charles leave with determination, I felt no inner turmoil.
In the afternoon, I received a package sent by my mother.
Because of regional dietary differences, my mother worried that I might not adapt, so over the years, she often mailed me food she had prepared herself.
When I looked at those jars of hometown dishes, my eyes turned sour.
I missed my mother and wanted to go home.
I called my boss. "You previously mentioned the opportunity to transfer to the Las Estrellas headquarters. Is that still available?"
My boss sounded surprised. "Of course, with your abilities, this opportunity is yours alone."
On the fourth day of Charles being absent, I texted him, asking when he would take me to file for divorce.
He brushed me off, saying: [I'll get to it when I have time.]
I looked at Camilla's tweets. They were together every day, acting like a couple in love.
I had no idea when he referred to as having time.
I didn't expect Charles to come back that evening, with Camilla following him.
I was eating dinner, oatmeal paired with the hometown dishes my mother had made.
Charles kissed Camilla as if I didn't exist. He said he was going to the room to pack his clothes and told Camilla to wait in the living room for a while.
Camilla obediently nodded. Once Charles entered the bedroom, she began to critique the house's decor as if she were the owner.
"I don't like the color of this wall. I prefer pink.
"This sofa isn't soft enough. I want Charley to replace it.
"Your wedding photos are so outdated. I plan to go to the Maldives with Charley to take wedding photos. They will definitely look better than yours."
