Chapter 2
I did not enter the room to interrupt them. Instead, I contacted a private detective to collect evidence of their wrongdoings.
I spent a few days at the hotel. Aaron called. “Dear, what time are you coming back today? I’ve made some food for you.”
I still needed some time to collect the evidence, so I simply said, “I’m reaching in the afternoon.”
Aaron personally came and picked me up. He made me a lot of my favorite food, and they smelled really delicious.
In the past, I always thought it was because Aaron loved me too much, and that was why he learned how to cook.
As I recalled, I realized he was trying to win my trust and steal my inheritance that I got from my mother.
“Why are you crying?” Aaron noticed that something was wrong with me. He immediately pulled me into a tight embrace as he comforted me with a soft voice. “Is it because you miss me too much from not seeing me for a long time?
“I miss you too. Every day, I was counting down to the day of your return.
“I finally realized that I won’t be able to live without you. We must grow old together.”
I smiled bitterly and cut his lies short. “Let’s eat. I’m hungry.”
When Aaron was serving me some soup, his phone rang.
I saw the caller ID started with the alphabet “K”. Aaron noticed me watching his phone screen, so he avoided eye contact and explained, “It’s Kevin Smith, my colleague.
“What? Are you alright?
“Sure, I’ll head over now.”
Aaron was frowning when he explained to me in a trembling voice, “An important project that Kevin and I work on has run into some issues. I have to go over now to settle it.”
I smiled and nodded.
“Baby, you’re always so understanding. I love you.” Aaron kissed my forehead and immediately left.
As I looked at his leaving back, my body turned cold. I tried very hard to suppress the coldness in my chest until I felt numb.
After a while, the private detective sent me a few photos.
Kaitlyn’s face was pale as she lay weakly on the hospital bed. My father and Aaron were by her side. To them, Kaitlyn was their whole world.
I followed Aaron’s car as he drove to a private hospital. I followed him into the hospital.
I hid behind the door and witnessed their happiness.
“I felt some pain in my abdomen just now. I thought our child was dying.”
“Our child will grow up healthily.” Aaron kissed Kaitlyn with the same lips that he had just kissed me.
My father smiled in satisfaction as he looked at the sweet couple. Suddenly, he seemed to think about something. His face fell. “Aaron, how’s your progress with Elena? When will she give you her money? Back when I remarried, she had cut ties with me. She said she would not give a single cent of her mother’s inheritance to me. Was she really thinking I should spend the rest of my life alone?”
“Of course not. You have the right to find your own happiness, and you have the freedom to remarry. Now, Elena trusts me very much. I believe she will transfer her shares from Stance Corporation to me very soon. I’ll make a will after I get her assets, and all the money would belong to Kaitlyn and my child.”
All three of them smiled in satisfaction. They looked like a happy family.
Just when I was about to leave, my stepmother, Jolene Anderson, bumped into me.
Chapter 3
“Elena, why are you here?” Jolene screeched and jolted the people in the hospital ward.
Aaron and my father came out. Both of them looked at me with a serious expression. They were trying to find out if I had known anything.
I put on a surprised expression. “Why are you here? My tummy hurt after I had my meal, so I’m here to see a doctor.”
The three of them looked relieved.
I continued, “Aaron, aren’t you at work?”
Aaron was dumbfounded. He did not know what to say. Cold sweat broke out from his forehead.
The next moment, Kaitlyn walked over as she tightly wrapped her arms around her abdomen. She yelled at me, “Elena, why are you here? Are you trying to kill my child?”
“You’re pregnant? Who’s the father?”
Aaron coughed and pulled me over. He explained in a low voice, “Please don’t get the wrong idea. Kaitlyn’s pregnant, and she’s feeling unwell. As her brother-in-law, it’s natural for me to visit her at the hospital. However, I’m afraid that you’d be angry, so I didn’t tell you.”
“You told me lie after lie. I’m not sure what I can believe anymore.”
My father pointed at me and scolded me, “Elena, don’t cross the line. Aaron is telling the truth! Do you know why we would lie to you? It’s because you’re closed-minded and selfish. We only lied because we’re afraid of you harming Kaitlyn.”
Instead of being angered, I laughed. “Kaitlyn isn’t married. Who’s the father of the child?”
Aaron and Kaitlyn silently exchanged a gaze. Kaitlyn said, “The father of my child is a mysterious, powerful figure. We have to keep it a secret.”
“Ha ha, does that mean that your son is an illegitimate child like you?”
“You!” Kaitlyn was trembling from anger. She pulled out her phone and questioned me, “Why are you treating your own younger sister like this? In the past three years, you’ve been cursing me every single day. I had always endured that in silence. Now, you’re insulting my child? I won’t allow you to do that.”
What? I was a little dumbfounded.
Aaron looked at the content displayed on the phone screen and looked at me with a stern expression. “Elena, you’re really a vicious woman!”
I looked at the phone in confusion. Then I read our conversation thread. There were mean, scary messages coming from me. The daily messages lasted for three years.
However, after Aaron and I got married, I no longer kept in contact with her.
My father suddenly slapped me across my face.
I fell to the floor. My cheek was prickling in pain and my ears were ringing.
Through my blurry vision, I saw Kaitlyn faint in Aaron’s arms.
Aaron immediately called over a nurse. The nurse said, “Kaitlyn has anemia, and she’s triggered. That’s why she fainted.”
Aaron carried Kaitlyn in his arms and glanced at me coldly. “Then you should get her blood for Kaitlyn. They’re sisters.”
My father and Jolene picked me up from the ground. They grabbed onto me to not let me struggle. They drew a lot of blood from me…
Chapter 4
After getting a blood transfusion from me, Kaitlyn finally opened her eyes.
Aaron stopped frowning and hugged Kaitlyn tightly. “Thank heaven, I was so worried.”
The family was crying and laughing, and I was discarded at the corner like trash.
Kaitlyn saw me in the corner and said worriedly, “Is Elena okay? She looks sick.”
Aaron was scornful. “She did so many wrong things to you. Giving you her blood is her way of making it up to you. You’re really too kind; that’s why you’re bullied.”
My father followed up by saying, “Elena’s in great shape. If she didn’t die three years ago, she won’t die from losing a little blood.
The passersby were glancing at us. They were looking at me with sympathy.
“I don’t like hospitals. I want to go home,” Kaitlyn pleaded.
“Alright, alright. Let’s go home.” Aaron carefully carried Kaitlyn in his arms. When he passed by me, he kicked me with his leather shoes. “Stop feigning innocence. You’re the one who’s in the wrong. I’ll bring Kaitlyn back to rest. You can go home by yourself. I won’t go home tonight.”
Then they left.
I struggled to get up. The pain from the needles made me gasp.
“Be careful.” A strong arm helped me up.
After I stood up, I thanked the man who helped me.
I carefully looked at the man. He had really prominent features and curly black hair.
“Elena, I’m Andrew Edwards.”
“Edwards? Edwards Corporation?”
“You’ve helped me in the past. Even though it was nothing to you, I wanted to repay your kindness.”
“I… I don’t remember.”
“This necklace helped me to kick start my career. After I was successful, I got it back from the pawn shop. I was hoping that I would be able to return it to you.” Andrew took out a delicate diamond necklace from his pocket. At the back of the necklace, there was an engraving of my name. I had indeed given it away to someone before.
“You should divorce immediately and distance yourself from Aaron.
“I’ll arrange some bodyguards for you so no one can harm you again.
“I’m getting my people to collect evidence for you. You just need to take care of your health.”
Andrew arranged a blood transfusion for me. After I recovered, he sent me home.
